Lighthearted - to be called a “manky mare” for mopping first then vacuuming

My sister is staying at my flat for a few days while she is getting hers painted. While sharing the cleaning the other day she screeched I was a manky mare for mopping my wood floor and bathroom before vacuuming. I very calmly explained I prefer to loosen any dirt and debris then vacuum but she said it’s not how it’s done

We then called our mum to ask her who is right but her response was she was so happy we’re fighting over cleaning and not men and hung up on us. My sister then re-mopped my floor.

I know it’s not what people do but is it really that unreasonable to mop first??

Proper deep cleaning which includes mopping is done once a week, but I will vacuum at least once before that as I have a very furry cat. I do allow people to wear their shoes in my flat Shock so as a compromise I can mop, vacuum, mop again with a clean pad. I have a micro fibre mop which has removable pads

@Cantthinkofanythingrightnow but that is exactly why I mop first, to vacuum the bits the mop scrubbed up

I (cleaner) have never come across a floor dirty enough that the dirt needed to loosened up first before it would hoover up. Some bits need a couple of runs over with the hoover or the nozzle but never ever had a floor that wasn’t clean after. Hoover and a mop. (Rather than a mop-hoover-mop) I doubt your floors are that dirty either OP. I think you can get away with hoovering and just mopping once.

its your house,do whatchu like.even though youre doing it wrong..youd have to do a second mop to get it properly clean.

Northernsoullover · 05/09/2019 18:18

I'm a cleaner and I do a lot of work in rental properties between lets. After noticing that I spent an inordinate amount of time vacuuming, mopping, then having to vacuum again to get the bits I'd found/loosened with the mop I now mop first. Then vac. Better results and it saves time.

@ThisIsAllaMooPoint ShockShockShock well now you're taking it too far! It has to be jam then cream. It's like you're living in some strange alternative universe.

Now I want a scone with jam and clotted cream Grin

Bookworm4 · 05/09/2019 18:25

Yes your mum is a ⭐️ but she’s missed the essentials; jam FIRST!!!!
There’s no hope for you @moot

TheRLodger · 05/09/2019 18:27

Oh someone I work with does it the way you do it op. It drives me mad. It smears the dirt. Vacuume then mop all the way. Similarly with dust dust don’t spritz water on it

MerryDeath · 05/09/2019 18:29

sister is correct and mum rules all

Anyonebut · 05/09/2019 18:30

At one place where I used to work, we were applying for a certificate of excellence for something or other, and on the environmentally friendly section, one of the points was always hoover or sweep before mopping to reduce water use.

OneUsernameOnly · 05/09/2019 18:31

@Raphael34 I hoover, mop then hoover too

EntirelyAnonymised · 05/09/2019 18:34

Hoover then mop. We are a household that loses lots of hair (pets and people) so there is always plenty to be vacuumed up before mopping. The thought of a load of wet hair being mopped up gives me the boak.

SudowoodoVoodoo · 05/09/2019 18:36

Sweep, mop, hoover.
With a dyspraxic, messy eater in the family, there's always plenty of bits to be loosened off by mopping!

Couchpotato3 · 05/09/2019 18:36

I hoover to remove all loose bits, then mop, then hoover again when dry to catch all the extra bits. But then I only do mine infrequently, so it's pretty grotty. Your Mum sounds hilarious.

emilybrontescorsett · 05/09/2019 18:38

If vacuum first, then mop.
As for the scone, you absolutely must put jam on first, jam and then cream.

steff13 · 05/09/2019 18:54

You do you, OP. Even though you're wrong. Wink

downbutnotout2018 · 05/09/2019 18:57

Flylady says it's fine.

ThisIsAllaMooPoint · 05/09/2019 18:58

@DurhamDurham @Bookworm4 Shall I horrify you further? I only eat plain ones. Raisins in a scone - why do that to a delicious scone??? I also pronounce it as sc-ON.

Ok from now on I will mop, vacuum, mop but I won’t be telling my sister

Bookworm4 · 05/09/2019 19:06

Sultanas in scones!! You are a strange one 🤣🤣

Bookworm4 · 05/09/2019 19:09

Your pronunciation is fine, I’m Scottish and say SC ON

ThisIsAllaMooPoint · 05/09/2019 19:10

Sultanas, raisins, currants they’re all bad Grin

OP posts:
DurhamDurham · 05/09/2019 19:10

I'm with you on scones, no raisins for me either. I also pronounce it scon, I live in Durham and I'd just be laughed at if I pronounced it scone Grin

justanothernameonthewall · 05/09/2019 19:15

It's your house so do what you want! If your sister is staying and feels her way is better then suggest that she does it 😂

NoSauce · 05/09/2019 19:34

Vacuum then mop. Your way is weird!
