To think Boris would win a general election

Well that really, Im a big remainer but I cant help but feel that at an election Bojo would win and win big. Its depressing and I cant see how anyone could vote for him but I see him winning a majority at the polls especially since the remain vote is split.

I've no idea what will happen in my constituency (Ipswich). It's a marginal which voted about 56% leave, but in the last election it changed from conservative to Labour with a majority of just over 800. So I expect there will be a lot of campaigning here!

RosesAndRaindrops · 05/09/2019 20:34

I think he would as well, YANBU.
I don't necessarily want him to win (not a Tory supporter) but there's a lot of people out there who see him as someone who's serious about trying to get Brexit through.

Jaffacakebeast · 05/09/2019 20:42

Yorkshire lab strong hold here, I think we’ll turn blue. 100%. Every leave voter I know bar 3 have said they’ll vote Tory. Only 1 of the 3 have said they’ll vote for lab.

I only personally know 2 ppl who voted to stay in the EU, 1 said they’re voting green. The other1 is hoping we get a candidate for the Brexit party b’cos of how badly lab have behaved.

HeresMe · 05/09/2019 20:43

Contrary to what some here believe on here, lots of labour held seats voted leave in the referendum, how do you imagine it's going to go down that are now remain in the event of election. I keep saying labour party membership is different to the people who vote.

Corbyn is a prat changes his mind at drop of a hat, I couldn't vote labour(socialist worker party letsbe honest) at this time).

HeresMe · 05/09/2019 20:46

The majority of traditional labour party voters I know have said will not support Corbyn that tells you something.

Ohflippineck · 05/09/2019 20:46

Fear you may be right. Unless he’s taken past 31st October, we’re still in and he’s ditched by leavers in their millions. Problem is, they then turn to Farage so frying pan/fire.

RosesAndRaindrops · 05/09/2019 20:47

Lab strong hold here, think there's more chance of plaiting fog or hell freezing over before we turn blue!
I think you have a point though, it'd be interesting to see what happens if we do get a General Election as it's also a massive Leave majority round here (I voted Remain) - wonder if people would vote Tory as Boris seems to want to get it done?!

Daffodil101 · 05/09/2019 20:48

I’m a conservative remain voter but I’d vote labour just this once

RosesAndRaindrops · 05/09/2019 20:56

See, that to me backs up what i just said, really - Conservative Remains would potentially vote Labour, as presumably they aren't so bolshy on pushing Brexit through?
I think it'd work Labour to Tory with some - people who vote Labour (a lot of our Labour constituency are really pissed off with our MP at the mo and think is useless as not honouring vote to Leave)
Would be interesting to see what happened in a GE and if we'd turn Conservative!
Would make national news if we did lol

Ronsters · 05/09/2019 21:01

I live in a leave, Labour, West Yorks stronghold. There doesn't seem to be much love for Labour around at the moment, but l'm not convinced people here will actually vote conservative, although I do think the Brexit party may do well if we haven't left by the time there's a GE and they put up a candidate. On the other hand, Morely went, and has stayed, blue so who knows.

I'm not convinced Leave voters in general will ditch BJ if we are still in the EU after 31st Oct, which seems very likely. It's pretty obvious that it's not through his lack of trying and parliamentary arithmetic has stopped him. Something I'm sure BJ will hammer home at every opportunity in a GE campaign.

MerryChristmasHarry · 05/09/2019 21:16

Lots of Labour held seats voted Leave in the referendum heresme, but Labour voters in most of those seats mainly didn't. Don't confuse the two. Leave won those areas by attracting support from voters of other parties and by people who usually don't vote. This isn't true of every Labour Leave constituency, but it is true of a lot of them. For example it's what happened in Newport West earlier this year.

Basically, don't make the mistake of thinking that because a seat is Labour and Leave, those two groups must substantially overlap. And Labour (finally) get this, hence the decision to support the Benn bill.

Alsohuman · 05/09/2019 21:22

You beat me to it @MerryChistmasHarry. Look at Putney - 70% Remain, with a Tory MP.

daisypond · 05/09/2019 21:27

I’m in a strong Labour and huge Remain area. Lib Dems will make a push for the seat but I think Labour will hold on. Our MP is stepping down, so it will be all change here.

MerryChristmasHarry · 05/09/2019 21:31

There were five million Conservative supporting Remainers. That's rather a lot, and Boris appears to be attempting to make them all politically homeless.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 05/09/2019 21:31

My MP is one of the rebels. The majority was tiny so it could go to Labour next time around. Mind you people voted strongly to leave so the Brexit party might take it - UKIP and BNP have done well here in the past despite us having pretty much zero immigration.

Bahlindah · 05/09/2019 21:32

I agree with you that that is the perception of many, which is just ridiculous given how many times Johnson voted against Brexit.

Unfortunately soundbites are apparently more important than actions.

FatherBuzzCagney · 05/09/2019 21:35

I'm in Cambridge and I think Labour are screwed here because the leadership is much too pro-Brexit. Cambridge has zero party loyalty - in the last 30 years it's been Tory, Labour, Lib Dem, and Labour again - so despite the fact the MP has done all he can to support Remain, I don't think it will be enough to save him and the Lib Dems will take back the seat. The MP is obviously very worried.

MerryChristmasHarry · 05/09/2019 21:38

Yeah I think Cambridge will go Lib Dem too. As will a lot of seats with strong student populations: I reckon Manchester Withington is also going yellow even though the majority was pretty big for Labour last time.

Alsohuman · 05/09/2019 21:41

I live near Cambridge and I’d put money on it going Libdem. Sheffield will go that way too, I reckon they might parachute Philip Lee in there.

bombomboobah · 05/09/2019 21:44

I think Boris would win

daisypond · 05/09/2019 21:45

Despite my area being so strongly Remain- over 76% - our Labour outspoken pro-Brexit MP still had a large majority at the last election. Traditional voting patterns hang on here.

MerryChristmasHarry · 05/09/2019 21:48

If it's the one I'm thinking of she's fucking off soon. Thankfully. Its interesting how many Leavers have been whining about the heroic rebels going against the party and in some cases the wishes of their constituents, but it's fine apparently when a Brexit MP does it.

Monkeyseesmonkeydoes · 05/09/2019 21:51

Well i’m Not voting for that fucker or for Gove or any other privileged ex-Etonian. And perhaps if other people start feeling the same way there’s a very good chance that he won’t win an election.

nonsenceagain · 05/09/2019 21:53

He will win if he makes a pact with Farage. This will be difficult if he is forced to ask for an extension or if enough of his MPs refuse to sign the No Deal as a first option pledge that Farage will insist on before making a deal with the Tories. The Farage pact has been the aim all along, but those plans are unravelling so there's all to play for.

daisypond · 05/09/2019 21:54

Yep. She’s retiring... Actually, the Remain vote was nearer to 78% - I’ve just checked.
