Prince Harry saying "we can all do better" has really irked me- aibu?! He has every want and need satisfied while the majority of us and trying to do right by the environment whilst making ends meet. He is becoming very sanctimonious!

OP posts:

He needs to at least give the impression that he's actually trying to contribute, if he wants to lecture other people.
He really isn't helping himself - he'd do better if he just stopped talking now!

And it's completely tone deaf to imply that he doesn't use commercial flights for security reasons. But they are good enough for us? Unless he announced his travel plans in advance, s commercial flight offers no more risk to his family than it does to ours. Less even, because he has security officers.

"we can all do better" as opposed to you can do better ? Just not seeing the issue myself. Lets be honest, he's just being hounded at the moment. It's his turn. And we all know why. He didnt pick up a compliant little English Rose. I feel incredibly sorry for Meghan, I dont think any one envisaged this onslaught of hate simply because she exists.

Fortunately they have just brought in PR people but it begs the question exactly what the Palace PR have (or not) been doing over the past 3-4 years.

Lipz · 03/09/2019 15:04

I think because he was so quiet for so long and now suddenly he is very opinionated and the 'speeches' are coming across like orders. Who ever writes his speeches needs sacking. Also I think because many don't like the wife, it's rubbing off onto him and people are starting not to like him, which is a pity as he was always the cute, quiet, funnny one.

The public are not stupid, they can see with their own eyes how they are abusing what they are advocating. If the public go against them they are pulling the racist card which is absoutely annoying as it's untrue, now he's saying or at least trying to appoligise for the jet saga and saying they will be flying commercial and all he wanted to do was protect his family, which we all know is boll*x " because we know flying at any time they want, in pure luxury and no other passengers is the real reason.

RasberryRoyale · 03/09/2019 15:05

This is the man who took four private jets in one week?

Not really in a position to be lecturing anyone is He? I really wish he would shut the fuck up. He’s making himself look ridiculous.

sue51 · 03/09/2019 15:05

I don't dislike them, I believe their hearts are in the right place but they come across as blind to their own privilege.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 03/09/2019 15:06

oooo goodie anothr megan and harry bashing thread.

My distain is for the hypocrisy of the message they are preaching not because of who they are. I would still they were unreasonable if it was anyone else who thought it appropriate to lecture others to make changes whilst making no sacrifices or attempts to change themselves.

Samcro · 03/09/2019 15:07

yabu just for starting another MM and harry bashing thread.

JacquesHammer · 03/09/2019 15:08

YABU.

I don’t care who says it, he’s absolutely right - we can all do better.

Eleanorelephant89 · 03/09/2019 15:10

We don’t all have rich friends who can make charitable donations to ‘offset’ emissions...should we little people stay at home, Harry?

People aren’t bothered that he flew in a few private jets. That’s what a lot of the family do regularly isn’t it? BUT what bothers people is exactly what you said OP- ‘do as I say, not as I do’. He can’t have it both ways.

elessar · 03/09/2019 15:12

I'm not at all anti-Royal or anti Harry in general, but on this I think you've got a point OP.

Yes he's absolutely correct that everyone 'can do better' and should be aiming to be responsible in their choices - but I do think he's rather hypocritical. The comment about travelling by private jet to keep his family safe is ridiculous - why would he be in any particular danger from travelling (in first/business class) commercially? If safety was the real concern then surely all the Royals would need to fly private at all times. It just doesn't ring true and I'd have more respect for him if he owned it.

I'm not sure how sustainable the rest of their choices are generally but it doesn't appear that way - lots of travel, lots of new clothing, a generally lavish lifestyle by outward appearances. It does appear to be a bit of a case of do as I say not as I do

joystir59 · 03/09/2019 15:13

Stupid adking Udall to do better. How about the supermarkets stop packing everything in plastic?

diddl · 03/09/2019 15:14

" but they come across as blind to their own privilege."

It's hard to imagine that anyone with an ounce of common sense could say half the crap these do.

Do they even check speeches before reading them or just think that they'll be lapped up because of who they are?

SaintWillibald · 03/09/2019 15:14

No, he’s not wrong but he and Meghan are coming across as such hypocrites at the moment.

I’d rather they just on with what they do without all of the lectures and social media statements. There’s really no need!

GibbonLover · 03/09/2019 15:19

Is it stupid asking us all to do better? The fact is, we can, every single one of us. No point in deflecting blame onto the supermarkets - they can do their bit just as we should do ours. And as for the private jets etc., maybe they are unnecessary but is it really that ridiculous that PH wants to keep his family safe? After all, his mother was hounded to her death and the way things are going, the media will likely kill his marriage too.

MissEliza · 03/09/2019 15:20

Personally I'm fed up with so many full time royals trying to justify their position by filling up their time with causes. I thought being a full time royal is for ribbon cutting, state banquets, official ceremonies etc. How much of that do Harry and even William do? Remember Harry's pouting face at the state banquet? Things like that are the essence of their role, not pushing platforms, and they should perform them graciously. Why should the taxpayer be funding individuals to pursue their pet projects?
Also I do think Harry has become quite self important and smug in recent years. He had always seemed to genuine and down to earth in the past. I watched a documentary about the Commonwealth a couple of years ago and cringed at how condescendingly he spoke to some young delegates visiting from the Caribbean. He's become a full time royal because he could go no further in the army. I really don't see why we should be paying for the upkeep of the grandson on the monarch who will never become king.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 03/09/2019 15:25

Is it stupid asking us all to do better? The fact is, we can, every single one of us

No one is saying his message is stupid. Of course we can all still do things to help save the planet but when most people are already making real concerted efforts to make changes its a little sour for someone who appears to do nothing to keep lecturing us about how we can make a difference.

The simple truth is the little bits most people do day to day really are very little in comparison to the 4 private jet flights he took in the last fortnight. So its no wonder you get people wistfully thinking what's the point when washing their tins out for the recycling or refilling their water bottles whilst watching people like Harry board yet another flight.

LondonJax · 03/09/2019 15:26

I agree OP. I'll hold my hands up and say I actually 'like' Harry and Meghan (as much as you can like someone when you don't actually know them). It's great that Harry flies by commercial flights. I understand that he wants to protect his wife and child from harm. It's not the sort of harm we're likely to come to but harm from kidnap etc. I'm old enough to remember the potential kidnap of a young Princess Anne back in the 70s so of course that's a real threat.

But I fail to see why he needs to actually fly to many of these places at all. Years ago I was at a conference when Bill Gates spoke...from his office in the USA. We were in London, he used a satellite link.

Surely Harry should be setting that sort of example to all the business people of this world who fly here, there and everywhere. Many of those journeys aren't needed. It's not a paper signing exercise or a case of 'this contract has to be done face to face'. In Harry's case it's often a speech - why can't he be broadcast live. Show the world of business that they don't have to be present to be present. Show some real environmental good and just don't always hop on a plane. Then he'd get more respect and we may actually start getting some people who say 'you know what, I don't actually have to travel to that meeting - set it up like Harry did'. That would be a real legacy.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/09/2019 15:32

He’s not wrong. His mistake is in thinking that he’s the right person to say this

Exactly

Like father, like son ...

AgeLikeWine · 03/09/2019 15:32

If Harry genuinely wanted to use his position and platform to positively influence others on issues such as climate change, I would be supportive and wish him well.

The problem is that, by his behaviour, he obviously thinks that lifestyle changes and personal sacrifices are just for the little people while the rich and privileged continue as always. Do as I say, not as I do.

As a former Army officer, he really should understand the concept of leadership by example.

Aderyn19 · 03/09/2019 15:34

Unless Harry puts his travel plans on Facebook he's really in no danger from kidnapping whole on a commercial flight. I bet security check on fellow passengers are way higher than for when us mere mortals are flying.

cakeisalwaystheanswer · 03/09/2019 15:34

Why did he have to fly to Amsterdam at all to make his speech? The sensible route forwards is to make more use of technology so that people don't need to travel all round the world to hold face to face meetings. Climate change conferences etc seem incapable of using this technolgy.

Zoozoo101 · 03/09/2019 15:36

He’s flown to Amsterdam for an eco travel launch - is he really that stupid? It’s so easy to get the train from London to Amsterdam. Wouldn’t that have been a better message? Plus how can he use the argument about keeping his family safe when his brother uses Flybe?
