Am I imagining it?

Thanks in advance x

BendyLikeBeckham no, not cut and pasted. Touches on my professional area. Take up your disagreement with sociologists/anthropologists/cultural historians. What is deemed expressive/restrained obvs changes over time or from one culture/group/class to another. It's not science so of course it's contradictory. It's hardly controversial to say taste is often mobilised to assert superiority of one kind or another - look at all the threads from a few years back on MN with people asking if certain names or prams are 'chavvy' or not.
And yes, toast, I'm stuck with being represented as pinky-white on my screen anyway 👎🏾

The pregnancy and TTC boards do seem to have a lot of Huns and Lovelies posting on them.

With the obligatory xxxxxxx

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 03/09/2019 17:40

Love the straight talking, slightly cynical, no nonsense vibe of MN.

Actually it's far from it on here - minority opinion holders can be aggressive and contemptuous in their posts when defending their position - and so many posts where a topic is up for discussion where you can't be honest for fear of being struck down as judgemental

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 03/09/2019 17:41

obligations, what I see at the end of your post is not toast, it's a pink hand doing a thumbs-down and a brown circle. Meep.

(Is the brown circle instead of brown toast on other people's machines?)

Can't we just focus on the content that people write, instead of focusing on how they choose to write it?

The owners of mumsnet don't have a problem with 'huns' and it is their site. If posters DO have a problem, then post elsewhere.

There seems to be such a massive sense of 'ownership' of the site by some posters, who want their preferences to become the rules. I am unclear as to why they think mumsnet should bend to their preferences? Except for the fact that they are arrogant.

Who cares how people write online. They may have a very good point despite using xxx at the end of their posts. Equally, someone who writes perfectly, may be talking absolute shite.

It says a lot about some posters that they are concerned more with the aesthetics of posts than their content.

  • The pregnancy and TTC boards do seem to have a lot of Huns and Lovelies posting on them.

Maybe it's at least in part a function of age and experience?

@obligations I appreciate your measured response to my fairly twatty reply to you, but I think the "it's not science so of course it's contradictory" statement is pretty much a get-out for any theory, right? I have studied some of those subjects you mention (many years ago) and academic theory can be deeply flawed and biased for many reasons. I am not going to bore everyone with an analysis, nor do I have time, but I do take issue with the class arguments you propose. Of course society is constantly evolving and texts written even 10 years ago will be losing their relevance now. My personal view is that traditional "class" is fast becoming an impossible way of grouping people, because there are now too many variables, too much diversity and too many exceptions to categorise people, which I believe is a good thing. However, new groupings emerge (for all sorts of anthropological reasons) which are not so "class" based at all, including for example, "huns". Or perhaps it is not actually a group of people, because there is too much variety to group, it could be better described as a way of behaving: hunnery. And I find it mildly irritating, hence this thread.

Anyway, this topic interests me, but probably not so much everyone else! Sorry if this thread has got a bit serious and tedious. It wasn't meant to be. I'll stop now. As you were.

@MoobaaMoobaa some browsers don’t support emojis “typed” in other browsers or, say, IOS emojis on android devices, so they can show up as little squares sometimes. Maybe that’s what you’ve been seeing.

BendyLikeBeckham cheers - the class thing might be more fluid but then I watch these Brexit debates and the arrogance of these white public school boys and I think again! Could say more but we might bore everyone on here....

multivac · 04/09/2019 13:17

However, new groupings emerge (for all sorts of anthropological reasons)

...one of which, of course, is the widespread and perennial need for individual human beings to know themselves to be superior to, and distinct from, 'others'.

MoobaaMoobaa · 04/09/2019 13:33

gingersausage you might have meant AskingQuestionsAllTheTime

I see the the emojis as they were intended. like in my screen shot I posted.

But yes I think it's browser thing, not a MN thing?

BendyLikeBeckham · 04/09/2019 15:56

@multivac I do agree. Yonly have to go to a football match to see this, or to consider the history of organised religion. We are tribal beings.

@obligations The thing is, these white public school boys are anachronistic. Some of them could time travel back 200 years and fit right in. I bloody wish someone would invent that time machine!!

@OnlyTheTitOfTheIceberg Thank you, perfectly said!

I am glad I found this thread! I feel like my IQ has dropped significantly just reading half the threads/ posts around at the moment. There is definitely a noticeable difference and is enough to put me off bothering to be honest.
