Your GP calling you sweetie is definitely weird!

TurquoiseDress · 01/09/2019 08:38

Just woken up and this thread has made me GrinGrinGrin

DarkNoise · 01/09/2019 08:39

@bellainthemiddle I thought the same about huns! Very glad to see I was wrong. And yes says a lot about the current xenophobic climate.

pimbee · 01/09/2019 08:39

I've noticed the word "judgey" being used when people disagree with the OP. That is not ok.

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 01/09/2019 08:43

The darling abbreviations were not invented by Justine and Carrie.

bellainthemiddle · 01/09/2019 08:45

@Bridget1983 I'm glad it's not just me! And she says "oh, bless" which nobody under the age of 65 should be allowed to say either ;)

"Judgey" is not a word!!

bellainthemiddle · 01/09/2019 08:47

Mind you, I suppose technically, not is "hun". Has anyone else also seen it spelled "hon"? Then I pronounce it like that in my head and it makes me think, "The Hon Lady So-and-So"...

NoSauce · 01/09/2019 08:51

A quick google says that DH first appeared in 2006 on America Online. No idea if that is true but the acronyms are quite well known as internet slang.

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 01/09/2019 09:05

Dh etc were being used on Mumsnet and elsewhere long before 2006.

IWouldBeSuperb · 01/09/2019 09:06

I've always assumed the DH/C etc. had been adopted on here in a very tongue in cheek way....

It does make complicated family feud posts easier to read!

Except when people use DS instead of DSis

NoSauce · 01/09/2019 09:29

Yes after a bit of googling it would seem you’re correct. Definitely not a MN thing then.

ChickenNugget86 · 01/09/2019 09:30

There is nothing wrong with the yummy mummys IMHO

I can only ever hear this in the voice of Henry Zebrowski these days. It's an improvement.

I've found a few threads recently that have been quite disconcerting to read. They have been out of character for MN responses, and I've felt very sorry for the OPs who had written them because they needed some form of emotional support.

These were OPs who had been here years yet their posts were picked apart and the responses were character assassinations.

Yes I know MN has the reputation for being blunt but this wasn't the usual MN way.

Sadly some old and well known MNers joined in with the way the threads had gone, and were out to just kick the OPs when they were down.

Because normally the thread tone is set by the first few replies. I did wonder if we'd had huge new influx of users, who think because of the anonymity and the reputation of MN, they think it's ok to be nasty and personal. As for the long standing MNer who really should have known better, it just made me despair of the way MN is going.

The spelling and grammar isn't something that worries me, I'm dyslexic and was also schooled when they took the teaching of nouns and other grammar off the curriculum. So I've been making posters quince and gringe since circa 2011.Grin
Not too mention when I manage to post with whole words missingBlush

But no, I'm not keen on 'huns' 'ur' 'cause' 'coz' or any other text speak. At least make an effort. Read the room and use what is appropriate.

coolandcalm17 · 01/09/2019 09:55

As long as people are nice to each other is all I care about. There’s a lot of nastiness on MN .

DH, DS etc etc is just quick and easy. Keeps things neat. People know what it means.

Hubby takes longer to write as does daughter, grandmother, brother, mother in law etc.

Yes but 'son' is only one more letter than DS and 'DMIL' and 'DFIL' is one more letter than MIL and FIL.

DN is a weird one because no-one knows whether it means niece or nephew and 'DF' is also confusing as it can mean either 'father' or 'friend'.

I suppose it is ironic that we accept these but not 'ur' or 'm8' etc.

Bairnsmum05 · 01/09/2019 11:09

Ooft lm surrounded by enough Huns as it is living in Glasgow 😂

mamaraah · 01/09/2019 11:28

@CarolineKate what's this about netmums dying?

Hubby is quicker to type than husband. Everyone knows what it means.

U is quicker than you. Everyone knows what it means.

Gr8 is quicker than great. Everyone knows what it means.

Don't pretend the snobbery is logical.

LaMarschallin · 01/09/2019 11:48

what's this about netmums dying?

That was bad. Apparently somebody hacked in and reset those timers they have (saying things like "I've been mum to little whoever for 19years, 4hours, 22minutes and 2...3etc seconds") so they counted down instead of up.

When the counters got to zero...

Well, it was carnage.

I love the two separate conversations going on on this thread...those in the West if Scotland....and everyone else

I also love that the 'everyone else' camp hasn't noticed or asked what on earth it means in the 'WoS'camp...!

NoSauce · 01/09/2019 12:26

It’s not snobby to write great instead of Gr8 for heavens sake. Jesus wept.
