The government is starting an advertising campaign next week telling us all to "Get Ready!".

What else can it mean?

By the way, it's costing £100m.

I'm too lazy busy to stockpile, so I'll probably just crash into it unprepared and eat whatever is still available. I'm picturing having to live on jacket potatoes if all else fails.

I think Brexit is stupid on a million levels, and so I'm not particularly pleased with it, but I will just get on with it, and I suspect many Brits will be the same. We are a resourceful and resilient set of people. Other countries have had to go through worse, like collapse of their currencies, food shortages, civil war etc.

The only real worry is lack of life saving medical and pharmaceutical supplies. That is a real worry and I feel rubbish for people in that situation.

I don't like it but this mad Tory government have grabbed hold of the reins and I feel we're all inevitably being pulled along with it now. The right wing press, idiots like Boris and Piers Morgan etc are taking us all on this stupid roller-coaster ride. But I won't be stockpiling as I'll genuinely make do and mend if necessary. Most of us have far more than we actually need in terms of choice and plenty. It won't kill us.

Juog · 31/08/2019 18:05

I agree with Megan2018

Havanananana · 31/08/2019 18:05

There is no reason for us to import most of the food items and other commodities that people are panic buying.

The UK has not been self-sufficient in food for the last 200 years. There is nowhere near enough suitable land to grow crops and raise animals to feed over 65 million souls, so the UK imports nearly half of all the food consumed. The UK struggles to grow stuff like oranges, pineapples and bananas and there is not enough woodland to provide pulp for toilet paper at the other end of the consumption chain.

This is a huge opportunity for British industry. Let’s just get on with it and reap the rewards

Even the VoteLeave campaign admits that Brexit will destroy what's left of UK manufacturing and agriculture. Since the 1980s the plan has been to become a service economy. The results so far are that the old industrial heartlands have suffered over the last 40 years while other areas have stayed relatively prosperous. The irony is that the areas that have suffered most are those which have voted for more of the same.

I’m currently at in Spain, what should I bring back next week? 2 tonnes of chorizo?

Suebreo · 31/08/2019 18:09

Are u allowed to say it’s all a load of bollocks on MS

ToftyAC · 31/08/2019 18:12

It’s just daft. However, after a quiet summer at work, it means we’re going to be busy at least.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 31/08/2019 18:13

AuldAlliance · 31/08/2019 18:13

Are u allowed to say it’s all a load of bollocks on MS

Only if you explain what "it's all a load of bollocks on MS" means

treeplop · 31/08/2019 18:16

My wine is from Europe! Definitely stock piling!!

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 31/08/2019 18:16

I reckon its a typo for MN

But I’m not 100% sure

LittleSweet · 31/08/2019 18:20

Autumnintheair, you spelt 'gravy' wrong.

LittleSweet · 31/08/2019 18:20

And 'you're'.

Tinkerbell1980 · 31/08/2019 18:29

I bought stocks of gin & chocolate (the essentials when you have 3 kids and a cat) I've scoffed/slurped the bloody lot!
I'm clearly doomed....

Bunnyfuller · 31/08/2019 18:30

@funnelfanjo - exactly, the Tories shifted attention away from their Austerity-but-not-for-all-of-us and harnessing the discontent caused by it, and directed it against the EU, open borders and them nasty furriners taking our jobs using our NHS. It’s escaped most of them that actually our NHS is almost completely staffed by nasty furriners, and their 3 for a pound frozen Greggs are manufactured and packed by nasty furriners.

Just been to our neighbour’s allotment to pick some veg and raspberries, having given them some of our glut of eggs earlier. My parents voted Leave, even if there aren’t shortages just watch the prices rocket. Those on lower incomes are really going to feel this, they have no idea what they’ve been conned into voting for.

Leavers are now at a stage of ‘shit or bust’ there’s very few with the cajones to admit they got it wrong. They say that the UK will look stupid if we change our minds. How fucking stupid do we look deliberately trashing our economy. Rather than getting their heady Rule Britannia day’s back they’ve guaranteed we will no longer be a world class player.

I know several farmers, I just need to find a local gin supplier to barter with.

Pliudev · 31/08/2019 18:33

Pat123dev so glad you are profiting already from this mess. It's plain that some will. But for the majority of us, things are going to get more difficult. And for what?

By the way, did your farm not receive any EU subsidies? And please let us all know when your coffee/tea harvest comes in, we'll be round.

Havanananana · 31/08/2019 18:34

Right on cue, the government's Get Ready instruction booklets have started to appear.

I put aside a number of extras bought over a period of months for Brexit 1 / winter weather problems. Extra UHT (use it for yoghurt making anyway), tinned toms, pulses, pesto, pasta, rice, Tom purée, tea, loo roll, shampoo etc. All stuff I use anyway and it’s handy to have spare so that if I can’t get to the shops for a week or 2 nothing much would change. But we’ve run down the supplies so I will build up again over the next while, just buying a couple of extra bits every week, especially if there’s a 2 for 1 on shower gel or something. Then we’re set for snow, Brexit, flu, broken car, or any other reason I can’t shop.

Pat123dev · 31/08/2019 19:00

@Pliudev we don’t receive a penny from from Eu, we earn all our own money....

And I didn’t actually ask for this, I was pointing out that it’s a shame that it’s taken something like brexit to encourage people to buy locally.

The thing is, wether you voted leave or remain. It’s happening, and surely it’s best to get on with it and find the best results? If my business is profiting, then I’ll be paying more tax....that goes back into the country.....

4cats2kids · 31/08/2019 19:12

Just spent a fortune stocking up.

DS just shouted from the bathroom that his lynx is made in Germany and I need to go out and buy a load of that! Grin

rollonautumndays · 31/08/2019 19:28

Havanananana that's really funny, that looks just like my larder - only neater and emptier.

Looks nothing like me though honest!

rollonautumndays · 31/08/2019 19:36

I've been stocking up a bit at a time.

Lidl's great for cheap cupboard stuff.

Today we got extra passata, tinned fruit, pasta, pesto, UHT milk, yeast, lemon juice (for cooking), porridge and cereals, coconut milk (also for cooking), ibuprofen and shit loads of biscuits Grin

No big deal, just some extra stuff for the cupboard. We're doing the same every time we shop.

Forgot toilet paper, damn! Wink

glennamy · 31/08/2019 19:59

No need to do this whatsoever... It is irresponsible and downright stupidity.

Parker231 · 31/08/2019 20:01

Why not? Do you not think the supply chain will be affected?

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 31/08/2019 20:01

How is it irresponsible @glennamy?

funnelfanjo · 31/08/2019 20:03

Please explain @glennamy - how is it irresponsible and stupid?
