The government is starting an advertising campaign next week telling us all to "Get Ready!".

What else can it mean?

By the way, it's costing £100m.

The poundland in my town went bust. Too upmarket.

PigletJohn · 03/09/2019 17:39

ah, £1 in Iceland too

PigletJohn · 03/09/2019 17:46

I wonder how long a sack of potatoes will keep in the garage?

I like pie and mash.

Have ordered a couple of cases of wine from Aldi.

Still need more porridge and pasta. Olive oil. Modena vinegar. Sardines?

When will the ration books come out?

BertrandRussell · 03/09/2019 17:50

About 2-3 months. We always buy our potatoes in sacks.

RosesAndRaindrops · 03/09/2019 17:57

@PigletJohn

What is B&M?

Great shop!

I work in the public sector and have no faith in the government whatsoever. When we were supposed to leave in March they sent out job alerts 3 weeks before for staff interested in going on secondment for border checks etc, how they were expecting to train everyone in that time frame baffled me

malificent7 · 03/09/2019 19:22

Rees Mogg told the consultant he was scaremongering as don't forget...the public have had enough of experts.
Love that the consultant called JRM a muppet!

Just been in Poundland today. Bought about a years supply of sanitary towels.

gamerchick · 03/09/2019 20:38

I popped into b&m earlier. There was empty energy drink shelves and the pre mixed cans of gin/vodka and tonic. All the chicken noodle soup was gone as well.

Despite everything, I had to chuckle.

Morrisons had random cleared shelves throughout the shop today.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 03/09/2019 20:42

I actually have some in my ASDA shopping trolley 🤦‍♀️

Iceland have the fray bentos pies for a quid also. Farmfoods are doing crates of heinz beans and long life milk for a fiver each farmfoods is good for catering sized things like laundry, washing up, potatoes, pet stuff etc.

bengalcat · 03/09/2019 20:55

Fray Bentos pies gosh that’s a blast from the past - not had one of those for years

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 03/09/2019 20:57

Where do you keep your potatoes?

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 03/09/2019 20:59

Sorry, I didn't mean where as in I'm coming to steal them where, just in what sort of conditions?

Basement? Garage?

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 03/09/2019 21:00

That did sound very suspicious chardonnay Grin

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 03/09/2019 21:01

Sorry!

RosesAndRaindrops · 03/09/2019 21:15

I'm completely off topic but sticking with the Fray Bentos stockpile theme (so maybe still on topic lol) just letting everyone know Fray Bentos vegetable balti pie is accidentally vegan so suitable for veggies and vegans alike.
Stock your larders up if vegan Grin
No I don't work for them, just luv em and we've got vegans in this household

Doyoureallyneedtoask · 03/09/2019 22:20

*Where do you keep your potatoes?

You’d better move them before she finds them 🤪🤪🤪*

ratspeaker · 03/09/2019 23:06

My zombie apocalypse cupboard doesn't seem so silly now.

Veggie, almost vegan DS worrying about chickpeas, tinned tomatoes.
Chef DS already been collecting olive oil and balsamic vinegar

roses thank you for that heads up.

Asda had tins of jackfruit thai red curry that are vegan and sweet potato curry also vegan

ratspeaker · 03/09/2019 23:17

Potatoes keep best in a cool dark place, preferably in a sack thats able to let moisture out.
Im wondering about frozen mash.

Im thinking buying the " tin can cook " book wasnt a bad idea

PickAChew · 03/09/2019 23:29

Dried chickpeas are cheap and don't take up much space. Can always buy some, cook them and freeze them (tutorials on youtube for young people). For fuel economy, black eyed beans cook faster and lentils and mung beans much faster. (ex poor student)

Meridian peanut butter half price in sainsburys, atm, if he wants to stock up.

By late October, spuds and root veg will keep well in an unheated garage or shed.

ratspeaker · 04/09/2019 08:10

Thanks for the heads up on the Meridian.
His favourite is the purple label Whole Earth which is £1 off in Asda atm
Tesco had an offer on tinned chickpeas, beans and lentils but the store I was in had hardly any on the shelves last Sunday.

I'd normally stock up on these things when on offer as it's saving money in the long run.
When the beast from the east hit central Scotland we were fine due to the zombie apocalypse cupboard.

Ah.. I had a panic online shop after reading this thread over the weekend. I don't online shop anymore (rebelling against ex-P controlling must-buy-in-advance behavior, I tend to now buy what I need in small amounts for DC and I) .. so I kind of messed up and have far too much!
But (and referring to your link @Parker231 - I hate Rees-Mogg too) my biggest worry personally is the supply of medicines.. I take epilepsy medication (not for epilepsy, but for a MH condition). I won't die or be in physical danger if I won't have this, but I will be house-bound. I'd be able to look after my DC at home ok but venturing out of the house will become impossible without my meds, 2 days after that they'll need to go to their Dad's (which obviously will happen, we have 60/40 split anyway).

4cats2kids · 05/09/2019 20:43

Been picking and freezing blackberries today.

timegoingtoofast · 05/09/2019 22:02

Been picking and freezing blackberries today

We did this last weekend and are going to another place this weekend. A lovely excuse to get the DC out for a walk. I mean, our freezer has loads of frozen fruit in it anyway, it's not exactly efficient! But it feels like a healthy pasttime and good skills to pass on to the kids.

Got sloes (for slow gin) and saw the elderberries are out, going to Google what to do with them. Also found some field mushrooms, but they got eaten the same day!
