The government is starting an advertising campaign next week telling us all to "Get Ready!".

What else can it mean?

By the way, it's costing £100m.

Such a load of twaddle, there will be no stockpiling here!
It’s the millennium bug all over again

Hirsutefirs · 30/08/2019 12:24

I seem to be getting through the gin as fast as I can stockpile it.

GabsAlot · 30/08/2019 12:25

Ffs yeah because all the food will just disappear

SupremeDreamz · 30/08/2019 12:28

@Pollywollywoowah hahaha, ditto.

1Wildheartsease · 30/08/2019 12:28

WooMaWang - that would be experience ! It doesn't take much for our local shops/supermarkets to run out of food ( a day of snow-dusting or even a bank-holiday does it).

Relying on our present gov to organise changes of this size in a smooth and uninterrupted way ... well, they will probably present the shortages as a planned strategy to reduce national obesity.

"I seem to be getting through the gin as fast as I can stockpile it" :)

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 30/08/2019 12:29

@TheElementsSong, you're needed over here Grin

Somebody's bound to come in and shout BINGO at the millenium bug being mentioned now Grin
(I've read a lot of Brexit threads over the past couple of years and know how it's gone lol)
For the record I voted Remain but I think some of the threads are just pure hysteria and have completely lost it.

RosesAndRaindrops · 30/08/2019 12:30

FFS, top bit should be bolded as a quote

granny24 · 30/08/2019 12:31

Megan, I'm sure someone will explain to you in very short sentences, exactly why and how there was no millennium bug.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 30/08/2019 12:31

maud

And @bellini

1Wildheartsease · 30/08/2019 12:34

@Hirsutefirs - yes! (Our wine-lake - provision from last time we approached the deadline- seems to have suffered a substantial leak.)

I hate shopping sooooooo much. Maybe I'll stick with stockpiling the wine. At least we will have something to trade with.

bengalcat · 30/08/2019 12:36

No space to stockpile - not that I would anyway . Will just deal with whatever comes my way .

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 30/08/2019 12:38

We are fine for booze....Grin

Though maybe we need more Hmm

ControversialFerret · 30/08/2019 12:38

People stocking up now does not cause shortages - it's sudden increases in demand coupled with stops in the supply chain that are the problem. Remember the beast from the east - 2-3 days of bad weather saw shelves stripped bare because transport and logistics had been impacted.

Stocking up now is sensible. It means that if we do crash out with no deal, then some people have reserves to rely on leaving what's on the shelves for those who don't (or who can't afford to stock up). A hard Brexit is likely to mean short term shortages for the simple reason that lorries and freight will be bottlenecked due to travel restrictions. The restrictions will end up being sorted out, but so much of our food supply is delivered on a 'just in time' basis that shelves will end up bare if there are any delays.

And as PP have already pointed out, those of us on medicines have already noticed shortages or difficulties in getting hold of certain drugs.

SegregateMumBev · 30/08/2019 12:39

There may be disruption to the food supply, especially that coming through the ports. Non-food items such as loo roll and dog food won't get priority, so those sorts of things are handy to have a couple of extra bags of. People who live a loooooong way from the ports such as those in Scotland or Norn Irn might be more affected.

maras2 · 30/08/2019 12:39

I ordered an extra jar of 'Smak' pickled mini cucumbers/gherkins.
But I've eaten them Blush
Not got the hang of this hoarding malarkey.

AppleBottomJeans · 30/08/2019 12:39

I built up a Brexit pantry for last March that we ran down. I’ve still got all of the passata, olive oil and pasta if anyone needs some 😂 I’m going to start restocking this weekend!

1Wildheartsease · 30/08/2019 12:40

I've been stockpiling (round my waist) for some years but am a little concerned about the skinnier members of the family.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 30/08/2019 12:42

FFS. I have no words.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 30/08/2019 12:43

FFS. I have no words

Which must put you at a bit of a disadvantage on mumsnet

FuriousVexation · 30/08/2019 12:44

How can you panic buy prescription medication and fuel though? That's what I'm most worried about.

Bbang · 30/08/2019 12:44

Same @ContessaLovesTheSunshine I rely on my levothyroxine

GladAllOver · 30/08/2019 12:45

Interesting to read the comments. My OP about the campaign was that the Get Ready slogan seems almost designed to start panic buying.

Ha, if the government says it, it must be false. How very like the government to tell us to panic buy, to make their figures look good.

Didn't some careless politician tell us not to panic buy petrol, some years ago? Result: panic buying. Or was it a double bluff, and they meant that to happen?

Ditto "worst drought ever", which brought on three weeks of non-stop rain.
