To think it is now inevitable that Scotland will become independent?

With brexit and the increasing move to the right wing, I think it is now just a matter of time until Scotland becomes independent.

The question of defence is an interesting one- trying to move currently serving personnel in the Scottish regiments to a new Scottish Defence force would cost an absolute fortune- who would have to absorb the costs ? And who would want to move - anyone over their 12 year point isn’t likely to want to sacrifice their pension.

amandacarnet · 01/09/2019 11:00

Morris fine. But any country in the world can print its own currency. People act like this is a big issue. It is not.

amandacarnet · 01/09/2019 11:01

Arabella, why would any soldiers have to move? They can stay where they are. It would be foolish of Scotland to pretend they can engage on foreign wars.

It's almost like the more integrated countries are, the harder it is to separate them once you start looking at the details.

It's a good thing that we don't rely on simple Leave / Remain question asked to the general public without thinking about all the complexities and answering those questions first, is it...

Wait, hang on...

Blueoasis · 01/09/2019 11:08

Arabella, why would any soldiers have to move? They can stay where they are. It would be foolish of Scotland to pretend they can engage on foreign wars.

Could they? They are part of the British army, they are employed by Britain. I mean I guess Britain could let Scotland to keep them and make them properly separate, but why would they be helpful like that?

amandacarnet · 01/09/2019 11:08

The only defence force scotland needs is its waters. So Scotland would simply have to employ the people already doing this job. No other defence force needed. ASI said I would institute an online citizenship check for anyone flying or getting a train. And at the a1 and motorway have automatic numberplate recognition system. So everyone driving has to register online. Same as you do when crossing dartford bridge. No need to do anything else or have any other defence force.

Blueoasis they are British soldiers, they would stay with Britain. No need to give them to Scotland. Scotland does not need them.

So you don't think Scotland needs to waive its big stick around the world, like the UK does at the moment.....

What about NATO?

You are right of course - and I guess that any country that wants to invade Scotland would come via England..

Blueoasis · 01/09/2019 11:12

So you want to leave us with no army, raf or navy from day one? That doesn't sound like a good plan considering how often the Russians come over for a 'visit'.

SevenStones · 01/09/2019 11:13

if they applied to join the EU, we would have to take the euro. Its part of the rules of joining.

That's utter nonsense.

amandacarnet · 01/09/2019 11:14

Come on. Scotland is not going to be invaded. Let's get real here.
The army and navy does not currently defend Scotland from invasion. This is pure fantasy land now.

OP posts:
amandacarnet · 01/09/2019 11:15

The reality is any foreign force that invaded would want London.
Not since World War Two has any country shown any interest in invading.

OP posts:
Blueoasis · 01/09/2019 11:17

That's utter nonsense.

It's not.

ec.europa.eu/info/business-economy-euro/euro-area/enlargement-euro-area/who-can-join-and-when_en

Look at the top. All eu member states apart from two are required to take the euro. Any new country must take the euro. They want to make it one currency, weren't they planning a deadline to force even the UK and Denmark to take it? It's not really working out well for them given all the debts but it is their plan.

chomalungma · 01/09/2019 11:18

Come on. Scotland is not going to be invaded. Let's get real here

Do you trust the English? Grin

Of course the UK isn't going to be invaded either- yet we spend a lot of money on defence, including a rather expensive submarine fleet and nuclear weapons.

StreetwiseHercules · 01/09/2019 11:19

We own 8% of the British military and its assets. If they want to keep Trident in Scotland while they plan to move or decommission it they will need to give us a good military settlement.

amandacarnet · 01/09/2019 11:20

Yes that is because Britain still acts in the world stage as if it was a superpower. Delusions of grandeur

OP posts:
StreetwiseHercules · 01/09/2019 11:21

“Any new country must take the euro.“

Lies. What’s the currency in Romania? What about Bulgaria? Hungary?

Stop wasting peoples’ time.

Blueoasis · 01/09/2019 11:22

Why do the Russians keep flying close to scotlands North border then? They are testing response times. I would imagine they do the same to other countries too, I know they attack Germany via other means. If we leave, they'll keep doing it. They'll just know quickly that we have nothing. Doubt they would do much with that knowledge but it does make us look weak.

chomalungma · 01/09/2019 11:25

Delusions of grandeur

That's the UK. Best army in the world and all that.....

Blueoasis · 01/09/2019 11:29

Lies. What’s the currency in Romania? What about Bulgaria? Hungary?

Stop wasting peoples’ time.

Romania: currently in the process of joining the Schengen area and will take the euro once it does.

Bulgaria: same as romania

Hungary: part of the Schengen area and is in the process of taking the euro.

They don't take it until they are part of that. But by joining the Schengen area, you take the euro. It also helps with the border controls etc so it's kind of useful to be part of it. Most members of the eu are.

ginghamstarfish · 01/09/2019 11:30

I live in Scotland and think the idea of independence is utter bollocks. It will never happen, for all the reasons already given.

StreetwiseHercules · 01/09/2019 11:33

Except that there is no time limit on adopting the Euro and there are Schengen countries who don’t use it.

Stop your nonsense.

ArabellaDoreenFig · 01/09/2019 11:33

You have a very poor understanding of what British Forces do! Why don’t you have a look at the MOD website and see current deployments that may give you a better understanding.

In the event of natural disasters who will undertake precautionary measures or rescue operations?

Not to mention the field day that organised criminals would have if there were no sea defence- it would be open house for the drugs and slave trade.

ArabellaDoreenFig · 01/09/2019 11:34

sorry that post was in response to the the OP

Kazzyhoward · 01/09/2019 11:35

With dwindling oil & gas reserves (which will become irrelevant once carbon based fuels are eventually banned), just how will Scotland finance itself if it were independent?
