What does Brexit mean to you?

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 29/08/2019 17:50

Posting here rather than on the brexit topic to hopefully get a wider range of answers.

How do you see the future of the UK once it leaves the EU?

What will change? What will stay the same? What will be the biggest change for the country? Your community? Your family? Your friends? Your job? Or anything else that will be affected.

I'm not looking into a leave v remain debate, just perceived changes. Good or bad.

I for one am glad you’re here, User344772734481882445. Now could educate us on how to deal with the potential of the GFA being fucked over, if they return the British border between Ireland and NI? I’m sure you have a better understanding of the issues.

Saddler · 30/08/2019 19:54

Total independence, merit based immigration, freedom to form trade agreements with the rest of the world, and the collapse of the EU within 5 years

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 30/08/2019 19:58

fenella

Excellent point at 19:11

Hey folks, I'm off to drink some wine and enjoy the evening! :) Thanks all, eapecially moo and Water, for the banter!

Enjoy your bunkers and beans tonight! I'm off to savour the flavour of a half full bottle of my favourite red! and soak up some sun! (I'm on holiday right now!! ... Somewhere in Europe ironically!!! I'll take some photos in case there is no coming back to these gorgeous place after October! Wink)

BloggersNet · 30/08/2019 20:01

I doubt UK would ever go for merit based immigration.

User344772734481882445 · 30/08/2019 20:02

*this gorgeous place(blimey! With all my typos today I am starting to understand why some have been insulting my intelligence!! ;) Apologies for the typos! Clumsy fingers and the wine is already kicking in!)

S1naidSucks · 30/08/2019 20:03

No answer?

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 30/08/2019 20:05

Youve done the vast majority of the insulting user Smile

Hope you have a lovely rest of your holiday

We didnt go to Europe this year

And funnily enough our first (short) holiday of next year isnt to Europe either...so hopefully everything for good or bad will have bedded in

WaterSheep · 30/08/2019 20:08

S1naidSucks

I wouldn't hold your breath. I'm still waiting to learn how James Dyson moving his business to Singapore, will help to grow the UK economy.

User seems happy to type, but less so to back up the things that she types about.

ContinuityError · 30/08/2019 20:14

We didnt go to Europe this year

We did. It was great. Nobody was talking about Brexit, nothing in the papers about Brexit, nothing on the TV about Brexit. Almost like it wasn’t the hugely important at all. Most refreshing.

S1naidSucks · 30/08/2019 20:15

WaterSheep Are you daring to suggest that our lovely new poster is shit stirring? Surely not? 😁

PhilSwagielka · 30/08/2019 20:17

@ContinuityError I was in Barcelona for Primavera Sound and it was refreshing not seeing stuff about Brexit for a change.

S1naidSucks · 30/08/2019 20:17

Almost like it wasn’t the hugely important at all.

It isn’t....to mainland Europe. It’s important to the UK and NI, because we’re going to be fucked.

pourmeanotherglass · 30/08/2019 20:18

Truth is, I haven't a clue what it will mean.

The worst case scenario could involve shortages of medication (DH is dependent on medication for asthma and epilepsy), shortages of food ( less of a problem as we're fairly unfussy so would improvise with whatever the shops have stockpiled), friends/ work colleagues from mainland Europe working in UK not allowed to stay, friends/ family from UK working in mainland Europe not allowed to stay, limitations on travel, recession, riots, civil war.

Best case scenario could involve agreeing a deal that is a fairly soft Brexit so only leaves us slightly worse off than if we had stayed in.

Alternative scenario could be that Brexit doesn't happen, but this could still cause riots/ division.

Basically I have no optimism left.

ContinuityError · 30/08/2019 20:19

But ... surely the EU needs us more that we need them? And the EU will collapse now? And the Euro will bankrupt everyone except the plucky little Brits who escaped the evil EU clutches just in time?

S1naidSucks · 30/08/2019 20:20

Absolutely, ContinuityError. I’m sure they’re secretly terrified of losing us. 🤣

Socksontheradiator · 30/08/2019 20:21

I think it depends on how we leave. Orderly or not. I am concerned about potential drug shortages (my extended family relies on insulin, anti psychotic meds, warfarin, and high blood pressure tabs.

Loss of EU workers, particularly (for us) ones working in care and for the NHS.
Disruption of food supply.
People who are already struggling with austerity measures being pushed over the edge.
I have a DD living in an EU city and fear endless queuing at the airports. We are hoping she is able to remain there as her home, partner and job are there.
Likelihood of civil war. Particularly re Irish border.
And much more.

I hope we are able to pull together to make it work, but I don't think it'll be immediate or easy.

MedSchoolRat · 30/08/2019 21:17

My student was due to formally get her PhD awarded next summer... Due to No Deal Brexit her British degree won't get recognised in Germany if it's awarded after crashing out. Cue massive scramble by her main supervisor to get it awarded early, by 31 Oct., and to warn the Uni about this problem for many of our students.

What Brexit means to me is...
A) I now know for sure that most voters in UK don't like me or people like me. The country is "sick of experts". Those of us who voted Remain in 2016 are expected to STFU forever more. I'm an immigrant so that's another unwanted box to tick.
B) There are loads of little hassle things that will happen for yrs, unintended consequences, like my student's degree not getting recognised if she doesn't get it quick.
C) I now have to live under a populist govt in a populist society. Where rhetorical debate is mostly playground logic (ie, "No, you are!" is the gist of main retort). Mostly unchallenged and very ugly.

splitthedifference · 30/08/2019 21:26

I am leaving my home and my job of 13 years to go back to the European country I came from, as I've been made to feel like a liability here.

bigKiteFlying · 30/08/2019 22:10

I think once Kent gets unblocked - and the port situation evolves to a new normal and the economy rcovers from the possible recession cause by the upheaval and probably enters a prolonged slow decline I image this will be the main problem - lots of unintended consequences many of which aren't on anyones radar.

LetsTryToLetGoOfAnger · 30/08/2019 22:14

A massive billboard on which the message is writ 100 feet high:

DEAR CHAVS, YOUR LIVES AND YOUR VOTES ARE WORTHLESS VS THE PRICE OF PROSECCO.

Feel free to not do it for another 100 years, I am happy while the message is being broadcast loud and clear until everyone knows exactly where they stand.

JaceLancs · 30/08/2019 22:23

Hassle
Scaremongering
Stupid people stockpiling

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 30/08/2019 22:31

People have stockpiled for years before brexit and will do for years after

Doesn’t make them stupid

bellinisurge · 30/08/2019 22:38

Ah yes, another Brexiteer myth to trick us - its a class thing, a generation thing, a regional thing.
Utter bollocks. I hope that shit gets flushed out by Brexit.

ginginchinchin · 30/08/2019 23:01

I think a large percentage of Remainers didn't notice or care about jobs going from the UK to other EU countries. Why should those affected feel for anyone bleating on about how their jobs might go now?
