What does Brexit mean to you?

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 29/08/2019 17:50

Posting here rather than on the brexit topic to hopefully get a wider range of answers.

How do you see the future of the UK once it leaves the EU?

What will change? What will stay the same? What will be the biggest change for the country? Your community? Your family? Your friends? Your job? Or anything else that will be affected.

I'm not looking into a leave v remain debate, just perceived changes. Good or bad.

I’m genuinely concerned for peoples mental state

Well if you are concerned about anything you should apparently either emigrate or go see a therapist

Sooooo

Figmentofmyimagination · 30/08/2019 16:11

It’s just not true that no businesses stand to benefit. Top tier legal and accounting firms are making millions and millions of pounds out of brexit and will continue to do so. It’s all upside. Can you imagine how much profit potential there is when every single one of your clients requires on-going regulatory advice on a variety of options at £500 an hour? It’s a dream come true - all your Christmases come at once.

Not to mention all the insolvencies, if things don’t work out.

And in the short term, there are some gains for British exporters, because the £ is worth so much less. Brexiteers will be delighted to point out how German manufacturers are hurting. Got to take those pluses where you can find them.

If you're that concerned, put pressure on the government to ringfence citizens' rights for Brits in the EU and EU nationals in the UK.

We'd all be instantly happier, I assure you.

Alaimo · 30/08/2019 16:35

At a personal level:

  • spending close to £2000 on British citizenship to basically buy my way out of any uncertainty around the future status of EU citizens in the UK.
  • turning down an overseas job offer because we have no idea what my (British) husband's future rights would be post-Brexit
  • for both me & DH potentially reduced future employment opportunities as we work in sectors highly dependent on collaborations with (and money from) European organisations.
  • I think the Settlement Scheme for EU citizens is going to be a major farce. I think future rights of EU citizens in the UK will be eroded (such as access to the NHS, higher education). And I think there will be a high chance of a situation similar to Windrush, with either not all EU citizens in the UK registered as being resident here when they should be, loss of paperwork to assert rights in the future, etc.
Xenia · 30/08/2019 17:04

As I said before the referendum those who vote leave are the turkeys voting for Christmas and we remainers (I voted remain) will probably not do too badly. Evven just 5 minutes ago I was getting paid to advise a client on a Brexit implication on a contract.

I would prefer we left under the withdrawal agreement however than crash out and I hope particularly Labour MPs who rejected it before even though it is almost exactly what they want - customs union, the works - can put their country before their personal interests if it comes before them for the 4th time. They have in a sense denied us three times - we will not forget.

Just come back to this thread and it's making me laugh!! GrinGrinGrin I've actually had a fairly rubbish afternoon, so needed cheering up! thanks all!

Hell, f"!k it! If you can't beat them join them! I think I'll join a few PPs and go stock up on baked beans just in case the crazy hysteria and mass panic are warranted! and maybe Armageddon is right around the corner WinkWine

FenellaMaxwell · 30/08/2019 18:09

@User344772734481882445 yes I thought it might. It must be lovely to be too dense to understand what’s happening.

BeardedMum · 30/08/2019 18:09

I wonder what settled status means. I know what it means now, but what does it mean in 10 years, 20 years? Is it next for the Brexiteers when they have got their no deal that they will turn their attention to the bloody foreigners who managed to stay and gain settled status and push for some kind of 2nd class citizen status? Currently I work and pay my taxes. I am a foreigner of value to the country. When I am old and maybe get sick and only have settled status, what then? I have already read but not sure it’s true that I won’t be able to move my company pension abroad without paying a huge tax on this😟

StroppyWoman · 30/08/2019 18:33

I think this is the end of the UK. Scotland will go its own way, Ireland with either descend into violence or reunify.

Deep recession, no longer significant on the world stage, creative/scientific/academic idustries suffering badly. Services collapsing, NHS unlikely to last long.

And somehow I can't see a tinpot little country we'll have made ourselves being allowed to remain a permanent member of the UN Security council.

We're consigning ourselves to the bin. It's insane

ListeningQuietly · 30/08/2019 18:45

I find it greatly reassuring that the committed Brexiters will be able to carry on as normal after a no deal Brexit.
I'll get them to do my shopping for me at their full shops with cheap prices Smile

User344772734481882445 · 30/08/2019 18:46

FenellaMaxwell - I'm sorry,I don't know what you mean!? I'm just an ignorant Brexit supporter! Confused

User344772734481882445 · 30/08/2019 18:52

Ps. Yes! Thanks! It is lovely being me :)

User344772734481882445 · 30/08/2019 18:52

Listening - what makes you think they'd do your shopping for you?

Moo5ele55 · 30/08/2019 18:58

But still no link.🤔

howrudeforme · 30/08/2019 19:00

For me personally:
Worried that ds’s father will return to his country and lose all the rights he had here the last 25 years. Timing, he owns a small business that I think will go under with Brexit (relies on foreign imports and staff who don’t earn a huge sum). He’ll leave having lost lots.
For DS - having a father possibly living overseas.
My retirement will be tough as I think we’re sliding into a long slump.
Regression - those that have the means will be well placed to grab the fewer opportunities - I see even less social mobility.

For the country - a long period of social unrest and divisions.
Less opportunities for younger people.

howrudeforme · 30/08/2019 19:01

Northern Ireland - they’ve gone through enough already.

PhilSwagielka · 30/08/2019 19:03

I'm worried about the Troubles restarting. And on a personal level, I'm a freelance translator - will it affect my work? I do German and French to English at the moment.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 30/08/2019 19:04

I was just thinking that moo

Latest posts have just confirmed the talent for ‘making up bollocks’

User344772734481882445 · 30/08/2019 19:05

As I said before moo - pretty sure the remainers are meant to be the educated ones who know it all!

I'm pretty sure that you are capable of locating articles about the Economic and business benefits of Brexit.

I'm a mere ignorant and 'dense' brexiteer and despite that I have managed to read a large volume of literature on both sides of the Economic and political debate over the past 3 years or so!

I'm sure you, as a remainer, must be capable of at least the equivalent (you have actually read some of the literature on both sides, haven't you??)

FenellaMaxwell · 30/08/2019 19:11

I think it’s probably best to ignore it until it crawls back under its St George’s flag branded rock at this point.

Moo5ele55 · 30/08/2019 19:11

Problem is I have searched( guessing you have too) and can’t find anything, just like you.

Would love something to cheer me up so hit us with dem links.

User344772734481882445 · 30/08/2019 19:29

Fenella - you are delightful aren't you!! I'm not an 'it', I do not crawl under or over rocks (except perhaps today when I took DCs to the rock pool at the beach! - thought it was entirely over rocks, not under as I'm not as slim as I'd like to be (perhaps that'll change after Brexit when there are no food supplies!!) Oh - I'm also not dense as previously explained !! ;) though sometimes feel under par, especially with lack of sleep!!

There are many (though not all I have to say) remainers who think it's fine to derrogate and patronise and insult leavers! As you said before - and I agreed, yes it is nice to be me! I'd rather be me than a judgemental know it all who insults others on forums ...

Moo is quite cool though :) though I'm sorry Moo I'm not giving you what you want!! I can't believe you can't find any!!

User344772734481882445 · 30/08/2019 19:30

though not thought ...

Autumnintheair · 30/08/2019 19:46

User in rl I have met more pragmatic balanced Remainers. Some not but lots are.

It's always a great idea to read round events, decisions votes and educate oneself on both sides of any debate.
It should really be drummed in at school everyone would be made to argue for things they may not believe in but it teaches the brain to be open to learning.

It also shows that positives can be found in all situations

Autumnintheair · 30/08/2019 19:49

Moo go over to brexit topic, lots of links in threads, mostly old threads, leavers don't tend to post on mumsnet anymore but poster called clavinova tries.
