Songs that aren’t even ‘sad’ but make you emotional?

Does anyone else find certain songs quite emotional for no particular reason?? I’m not talking about purposefully sad love songs.

Current one for me is Castle On The Hill by Ed Sheeran - it’s not even the most amazing song ever but literally gives me goose bumps and I feel myself welling up as I sing along in the car! Maybe it makes me nostalgic!!

Other one is Ocean Drive by Lighthouse family - makes me so sad!!

Anyone else?! Maybe it’s something to do with certain chords!

Which has reminded me of Don’t Give Up. Kate Bush is sublime on it but so is Peter Gabriel. Apparently he wrote it with Dolly Parton in mind but she turned him down! Can’t help thinking, as much as I love her, that’s probably a good thing!

Run by Stephen Fretwell (gavin and stacey themetune)

DH was in bed cradling our week old baby, I was putting laundry away, so sooo tired and with the baby blues. Anyway he had the album on and was rocking her and singing along and that was it. Big blubbery mess. There was a Fretwell ban in the house for a while Grin

“Daddy’s Little Girl.” Apparently I’m a psychiatrist’s wet dream.

That cheesy -Polaroid- song from last summer (or might be the year before)

"We took a Polaroid
You signed your name up on it
I put it in my wallet
Hoping I'll see your face again
We took a Polaroid
Captured the look in your eyes
It's only a matter of time
Before it starts fadin"

I lost my DM a couple of years ago and the line 'hoping I'll see your face again' just chokes me up. Something about that song...it's so pappy so it's very confusing to be so moved by it!

Apologise by Timbaland One Republic makes me sad because it reminds me of a lost friend RIP J xx

Ameanstreakamilewide · 29/08/2019 15:13

I have a black, cynical heart, Titsling and rarely cry...but i'm in bits about the Night Time song from Tee and Mo. 😢

I regularly sing it to my son...

Let the River Run by Carly Simon (theme to Working Girl, 1980s film)

"...we're coming to the edge, running on the water,
Coming to the fore, your sons and daughters..."

This has always struck a rather bittersweet tone with me as I watch the dc growing up and moving on in their lives. Only one little 'un left here now and the coming months see her 18th, her driving test, last year of A levels, university open days and application, so I suspect there'll be a few more smiling through the tears moments (in the privacy of the car - parked up of course).

Good Riddance is another one.

FooFighter99 · 29/08/2019 15:58

"Home" by the Foo Fighters

DexyMidnight · 29/08/2019 16:06

If you're over me by Years and Years. Despite the title / lyrics it's actually a really jaunty pop song.

Won't say why as outing but I literally started sobbing in a ballet barre class when that came on last summer. Had been trying to hold it together and for some reason the combination of my stretch and my worries collided with the music and i howled. Grin

I can look back and laugh now, that experience made me a fortune.

Jesaminecollins · 29/08/2019 16:08

Teenage Dirtbag because it reminds me of someone who couldn't get a date at school.

Jesaminecollins · 29/08/2019 16:47

Green Day "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" if you read the lyrics it is about a lonely person.

Jesaminecollins · 29/08/2019 19:43

Coldplay's The Scientist makes me emotional because it reminds me of a car accident I was in as a child.

Jesaminecollins · 29/08/2019 19:52

Is this sad? I don't know but it does make me feel a bit sad

Jesaminecollins · 29/08/2019 19:59

My last sad or not sad song ...

ChicCroissant · 29/08/2019 20:30

The first time I hear Fairytale of New York every year near Christmas makes me tearful, it was playing on the radio as we brought our newborn daughter home from the hospital. She was less than impressed that it still has this effect on me when I'm driving her to secondary school nowadays, but I'm OK each year after I've heard it once.

vintagesewingmachine · 29/08/2019 20:32

The Call by Regina Spektor- always makes me cry.
And yy to pop who posted " Let the river run" by Carly Simon...... coming to the fore, your sons and daughters... I hope we have given them the tools to be decent, successful, kind human beings 💕

Jesaminecollins · 29/08/2019 20:39

This reminds me of the death of a close friend

BritWifeinUSA · 29/08/2019 20:43

“Tiny Dancer” by Elton John always makes me homesick. I’m welling up just thinking about it now.

HandmaidJune · 29/08/2019 20:43

This is me from greatest showman. Went to DS year 6 graduation assembly and all the children sang it. Proper crying, tears and snot, the works, even the teachers had broken down and they had watched them rehearse it for days.

Happygilmorelove · 29/08/2019 20:44

Totally get the in the night garden references! So sad..makes me cry even more now as i heard it is played at children's funerals!! 😭😭😭😭

Happygilmorelove · 29/08/2019 20:45

Also nearly all Kate Bush's music! Dh and I went to see a Kate bush tribute act, half the audience were crying by the end when she sang wuthering heights!

Happiedays · 29/08/2019 20:48

Your sing by Elton John- Sang it to my little but in the colicky days and meant it. Make me well up every time.

Come on Eileen- like someone before, no idea why. It just makes me really happy

Happiedays · 29/08/2019 20:49

Little boy*

AlliKaneErikson · 30/08/2019 05:18

@MrsWednesdayteatime- Rule the world IS a really sad song, I think, once you know the story behind it.
St Elmo’s Fire and Together in Electric Dreams both make me emotional, as does the Goodbye Song from Bear in the Big Blue House! Also ‘Stop Loving You’ by Toto.

Jesaminecollins · 30/08/2019 05:29

I Can't Live by Harry Nilson is very sad especially when you read about who originally wrote it.
