Had to take Tuesday off work as I had a streaming cold over the bank hol weekend.
Went back today and a colleague commented about how I had had a lovely extra long weekend in the sun.
I had been to a country park on the Sunday morning and had put a pic of my dog swimming in the lake.

However I spent the rest of that day, and Monday and Tuesday on the sofa and didn’t go out again .
I am rarely off sick unlike other people at work who seem to take weeks off at a time for ‘stress ‘.
I have plenty of things in my personal life going on to make me stressed but I just get on with it.
I take one day off and get comments.
Was I unreasonable to have reported this to my manager? My manager is not my colleagues manager.
Colleague and I don’t do the same job.

If one of my team reported this I'd think "the lady doth protest too much" about being off after a BH weekend with a mere cold. I'd also consider it petty and not showing a team spirit at all.

And your comments re "stress" are offensive. Particularly given that you work in mental health. Illness due to stress is horrible and can be absolutely debilitating. Sometimes things are so bad that you cant "just get on with it" and you don't really sound that capable if a cold means you cant get into work.

Really cant believe this thread

Wearenotyourkind · 28/08/2019 19:04

I'm not sure OP got the validation they were looking for here...

littlepaddypaws · 28/08/2019 19:21

weare that's because the op knows now that they are a complete twat.

Raspberryfrog · 28/08/2019 19:26

Your work in mental health and yet you made a comment about stress as if it’s something trivial. Sorry but I would think a lot less of someone being off with a cold then being off with stress. It’s a cold FFS

Jeschara · 28/08/2019 19:32

OP this post is pathetic, grow up and stop being the office fool.

TidyDancer · 28/08/2019 19:40

I can't believe you actually reported that and want your colleague spoken to! YABVU and actually quite horrible. Unless there's a big backstory here, you are very much in the wrong.

Wearenotyourkind · 28/08/2019 19:44

@littlepaddypaws 😂

Beaverdam · 28/08/2019 19:57

You only had the sniffles for a day? Just sounds like a common cold to me and you shouod have been in work. If you had the flu then fair enough but it wouod have lasted much longer than a day. Sounds like youre lying and wanted a duvet day!

I am not sure how easy you think it is to get time off with MH issues?

I have 2 DC (one has severe learning difficulties/autism), I work 5 days a week. I am depressed and totally burned out. I saw my GP a few times recently, crying my eyes out, telling her that I need a break (which I cannot get because I either work or care, no family support and no respite care), that I really don't function anymore. I really hit rock bottom but my GP refused to sign me off and only offered to refer to councelling.

I am really not very well because of stress and totally run down and I care for a severely disabled child and it's not enough to get a sick note (I had 5 days off sick over the last 4 years). I cannot imagine how unwell one has to be to signed off with stress. Really shocking comments from you, OP esp as you work in this area.

Runkle · 28/08/2019 20:00

YABVU for not appreciating that stress causes debilitating physiological symptoms.

GrannySquares · 28/08/2019 22:09

Jesus Christ.. did you really report it?! YABVVVVVU. They was probably joking!

justgivemewine · 28/08/2019 22:40

Yabu to report such a trivial comment
Yabu to be so dismissive of stress/mental health sickness days

i work in mental health
Sadly I’ve found the people who work in a particular field can sometimes be the ones who show shocking amounts of lack of understanding, and get super arsey when called out on it.

Grundoncalling · 29/08/2019 01:51

I work in MH too. If you're in the NHS your manager will have a long list of infinitely more pressing concerns than this (I certainly do), and you will look petty.

If you weren't happy about the comment you should have challenged your colleague then and there. Saying nothing then reporting will not be helpful to anyone, and will definitely not reflect well on you.

Tbh, it seems unlikely you went from well enough for the park to too sick to work in a few hours. It's possible but seems unlikely if it's a cold, as they come on gradually.

Grundoncalling · 29/08/2019 01:58

I'm pretty disturbed by the stress comments too. MH is stressful (or at least my area is) with low resources, high need and unfortunately frequent abuse. Your attitude is what will put burnt out people who need time out of work for their health off it.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 29/08/2019 02:07

I suspect the only consequence of your report is that you will now be marked down as a dick!

Crazycrazylady · 29/08/2019 12:36

Gosh you'd have a path worn to yours managers door in my workplace If you felt that comment was reportable 😮

pooopypants · 29/08/2019 14:58

Ahhh. This was one of those posts. 🤨

lmusic87 · 29/08/2019 15:15

I think you should have told your colleague in the moment
