Announced on the news that boris johnson may suspend parliament to reduce the chance of mps being able to block a no deal brexit allowing him to democratically force the uk to leave the EU.

Am i wrong in thinking if this goes ahead there may be serious protests and maybe even riots in london and all across the country to force the governments hand?

The trouble is that this kind of does seem to be the only way out of the deadlock, doesn't it? I could imagine that people might be willing to overlook all kinds of things, just to see a change in the situation. Disclaimer: this really is just my imagination as I don't live in the UK, so don't know what people are talking about on the street.

leckford · 28/08/2019 17:34

I lived in Jersey for most of my life, the Jersey health service is dire (its is not) NHS . My husband and I had had terrible treatment from doctors and specialist, the hospital is old and terrible, multiple MRSA etc. The totally incompetent government have spent £40 million trying to find a site for a new one. On a 45 square mile island.😂

We left 2 years ago don’t miss a thing.

Europe and the sense of European-ness long precedes the EU, by the way ... do explain
Well, the Grand Tour was the grand tour of Europe, wasn't it, for example?

Legomadx2 · 28/08/2019 17:38

Riots? Because he's doing what voters voted for?

ABy1er · 28/08/2019 17:40

europa.eu/european-union/about-eu/history_en

This should help re my feeling of being European. We didn’t join until the 70s and before that we’ll life in Europe wasn’t exactly a harmonious time was it.

Personally I shall miss the advantages we got in the 90s A Europe Without Frontiers

It’s tragic and utterly shit that we are shutting the door in the face of future generations.

* The US Congress has been clear it will not approve a trade deal that threatens the GFA. Donald Trump cannot just give us one.

Correction: Nancy Pelosi said this. Not the entire body of Congress. There are plenty of Eurosceptics about who care way more about trade/jobs than punishing Trump for being Trump.*

This is true but Nancy isn't the only politician in congress saying this, she is the most important one because she is the speaker and she runs a tight ship.

There is a lot of pro Irish sentiment in the US even now and supporting an agreement that broke the GFA would be challenging even if the republicans held the house. They don't so it is currently a mute point.

AsTheWorldTurns · 28/08/2019 17:41

Europe and the sense of European-ness long precedes the EU, by the way do explain ...

Europeans had a strong sense of being European as they gained their stature in the world (through colonialism, alas) and had an idea that they were purveyors of a way of life e.g. liberal values, science, medicine, Enlightenment and so on.

notyetsleepingthrough · 28/08/2019 17:42

I do not know about riots but there is a protest on at Parliament Square (since 5.30) - if anyone fancies joining us

pumkinspicetime · 28/08/2019 17:43

Moot not mute point, actually though it's both.

leckford · 28/08/2019 17:44

Until recently most of Europe were fighting each other - WW1, WWII, the Spanish Civil war, etc. Not much sense of being Europe.

bellinisurge · 28/08/2019 17:44

Ever heard of GFA? Ffs.

Blibbyblobby · 28/08/2019 17:46

Riots? Because he's doing what voters voted for?

By delivering an undefined preference to leave the EU in the most economically destructive way possible? Yeah, I reckon even the people who voted for Brexit will not thank him when the shit hits the fan.

newstart1337 · 28/08/2019 17:49

So people are going to riot because MPs wont be sitting talking nonsense for a few days. Seriously this has been going on for 3 years, if remainers were going to stop Brexit then they should have done it already. What difference will a few days make?

Loopytiles · 28/08/2019 17:50

I wish people would stop presuming to know what “the people” or “voters” wanted in 2016 or now want.

ravenmum · 28/08/2019 17:50

Maybe someone should start some sort of union, to make people feel more as one, and try to avoid war.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 28/08/2019 17:52

Riots? Because he's doing what voters voted for?

Pretty sure nobody ticked a box saying "BoJo starting a coup" on their ballot paper.

Clavinova · 28/08/2019 17:52

Blibbyblobby
However without a trade agreement they may be subject to tariffs

That's why Nigel Farage suggested a "simple free trade" agreement with the EU - surely that's the 'end goal' after a 'no-deal' Brexit anyway?

as non-members they can’t influence standards
Where does he say he wants to influence EU standards?

Tonnerre · 28/08/2019 17:53

So people are going to riot because MPs wont be sitting talking nonsense for a few days.

Is anyone really this naive?

Tonnerre · 28/08/2019 17:55

There's a clue in the word "agreement". It needs agreement on both sides. After this clusterfuck, and after Johnson's proposal to renege on the repayment agreement, why on earth would the EU be interested in agreeing?

Tonnerre · 28/08/2019 17:56

I wish people would stop presuming to know what “the people” or “voters” wanted in 2016 or now want.

Do you think it's at least possible that people want not to have been lied to by a bunch of fraudsters in 2016?

pumkinspicetime · 28/08/2019 17:56

That's why Nigel Farage suggested a "simple free trade" agreement with the EU

And there was I fairly sure we had a free trade agreement with the EU already.
Having identical standards may help to make this easier of course.

LightsInOtherPeoplesHouses · 28/08/2019 18:00

@Onatreebyariver DH will die if he can't get his medication. You think I should just accept that? Fuck that and fuck everyone who voted for Brexit. If no deal happens and DH dies I will be blaming all of you, and perhaps one of you will tell me how I can explain to DS why his daddy is dead and how it's fucking worth it.

Clavinova · 28/08/2019 18:01

There's a clue in the word "agreement". It needs agreement on both sides. After this clusterfuck, and after Johnson's proposal to renege on the repayment agreement, why on earth would the EU be interested in agreeing?

If we keep 'no-deal' on the table (as any sensible negotiator would do) - then we might actually get a better deal with the EU in the next two months.

bellinisurge · 28/08/2019 18:07

Solve NI border@Clavinova and it's done
