No based solely on but inspired by a couple of threads in the last few days. I’m not quite vegan yet but plan to be fully by the next few months and none of my friends, about quarter of whom at vegan are not sanctimonious or preachy at all.

Also please stop bashing vegan cakes! They’re yummy!!

OP posts:
CalmAndQuiet · 27/08/2019 19:49

I agree with you OP. I have found that too. Please share recipes!

CalmAndQuiet · 27/08/2019 19:52

Tbh there are some really quite offensive and generalising comments on this thread. I think that is a perfect demonstration of the hostility.

AE18 · 27/08/2019 19:54

@user1493759849
Errr no There really isn't. Vegans are the ONLY one who are preachy and defensive and sanctimonious.

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't realise you were the absolute authority on all people other people encounter 🙄

I occasionally see vegans posting activist posts encouraging the lifestyle, in the same way that people do about recycling or healthy eating without being widely despised. I also occasionally see vegans come across as a bit annoying and attention seeking because they happen to be that kind of person in all regards. What I see a LOT is people making unprovoked jokes about vegans, sensing them "joke" photos of animal slaughter and saying they are going to slip meat into vegans food, huge rants about how humans are designed to eat meat in response to any generalised statement about the pros of not eating meat as if pointing these things out was a targeted attack on that one person. It's one of those things where the backlash is much more widespread than the actual thing, and it's just nasty.

NerrSnerr · 27/08/2019 19:57

I think that comment about preachy vegans was tongue in cheek @AE18.

To be fair I get pissed off with most people who preach about climate change/ environmental issues. They usually have one or two things they do brilliantly like veganism, recycling etc but forget about things like flying, having 2 cars, buying new clothes weekly etc. It's great to try and do small things to change the world but you're an arsehole to preach to others unless you do it all well!

AE18 · 27/08/2019 20:04

@NerrSnerr

Fair enough. I know what you mean, preaching always makes a person seem annoying. I just see a lot more of it from meat eaters than the other way around.

Someonetookmyusername · 27/08/2019 20:08

So much vegan chat lately. I promise I only insulted the cakes not the people. They are sweet and I will eat them. But there not as good as real cake.

The people are fine, most will be wankers because most people are wankers (I'm only half joking).

That is all.

underneaththeash · 27/08/2019 20:11

I think most people are quite anti it because it's not healthy.
Vegan diets lack several essential amino acids, B12 and usually calcium.

My daughter especially is at an age where she is quite susceptible to pressure from youtube and she's also at an age where she needs a healthy balanced diet.

Teacakeandalatte · 27/08/2019 20:23

I'm not saying MN as a whole is anti vegan but I have seen a few threads where there was a strong anti vegan contingent and its especially the case regarding raising your dc as vegans.

LemonPrism · 27/08/2019 20:34

I haven't at all... there are many threads asking and sharing vegetarian/vegan recipes.

Legomadx2 · 27/08/2019 20:36

I wish vegans would shut up about being vegan. It's so boring. Just get on with it and don't go on about it.

madcatladyforever · 27/08/2019 20:39

Everyone is hostile to vegans, it's like a pavlovian response, people don't know why they are hostile but they are because everyone else is.
I find it rather pathetic really.
What is so bad about caring about animal welfare and your healthy body? I'd much rather be friends with someone who cares about animals than someone who only cares about themselves.

madcatladyforever · 27/08/2019 20:41

nobody I have ever met goes on and on about being a vegan, the most they do is ask if there is any vegan food when they go out. Apparently that is "going on" about being a vegan.
Another pavlovian response I'm afraid.
Plenty of my friends go on and on ad nauseam about the meat they eat.

Blubluboo · 27/08/2019 20:43

madcat I agree that they care about animal welfare. But why would someone who isn't vegan not have a healthy body?

1Morewineplease · 27/08/2019 20:44

I don’t like criticism of people’s lifestyle choices , in the main, but I have noticed, on various social media forums as well as in real life, that veganism seems to be the new messiah and that those who don’t follow it are considered idiots or stupid or climate change deniers. Some of us ( older folk) are finding it hard to give up on fifty plus years of eggs, butter, meat etc... I resent being told by twenty somethings that I am the spawn of Satan if I dare to eat a bacon butty. Also, I would like to add that I regularly cater for a strict vegan but have been utterly horrified at the red warning labels on vegan foods. So much of it is so highly processed rubbish. I ( probably naively) believed that vegans should be eating pulses, vegetables, grains ... not bacon substitutes, pastry substitutes, any meat substitutes or anything else that derives from a test tube. Interesting to note that many Quorn products are not vegan and also interesting to note that many folk, including myself ( who is trying to be good!) cannot stomach Quorn or tofu! ( huge dyspepsia and increased IBS symptoms)

ragged · 27/08/2019 20:46

All the people I know IRL who call themselves vegan are quiet about it. They could not give a shiny how other people eat.

MNers seem to know A LOT of pushy people IRL. Maybe like attracts like?

madcatladyforever · 27/08/2019 20:46

I don't recall saying in my post that other types of diet are NOT healthy.

Mumtotwo82 · 27/08/2019 21:20

Its true about the sly custard creams..I caught a vegan friend of mine troffing a pack down in a quite corner because he was in a mood no one bought vegan food to the party 😂

Legomadx2 · 27/08/2019 21:29

@madcatladyforever this thread is what I call going on about it. Why do you care what internet randoms think about what you eat?

I eat loads of crisps - I'm sure some people would be horrified but I don't give a fuck. I also sometimes drink too much.

But I don't start threads whinging about such things as I don't define myself by what I do or don't eat.

kikisparks · 27/08/2019 21:30

Yanbu

kikisparks · 27/08/2019 21:39

Undertheash it’s not unhealthy Confused

The NHS- “With good planning and an understanding of what makes up a healthy, balanced vegan diet, you can get all the nutrients your body needs.“

The British Dietic Association “a well-planned vegan diet can “support healthy living in people of all ages.”

You can get all amino acids and calcium from plant based foods. B12 comes from bacteria and many animals are supplemented too.

CalmAndQuiet · 27/08/2019 21:41

So much hostility just here. In this thread.

kikisparks · 27/08/2019 21:55

I actually thought some more and I don’t think the whole site is hostile at all (there are a fair few vegans here for starters) many people are respectful but there are a few strong hostile voices who have to make rude comments:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3349987-AIBU-to-ask-what-vegans-actually-eat

“It's a strange kind of arrogance that these people have”

“Every vegan I know bangs on and on about what they eat ad nauseum.”

“Every fucking vegan will tell you every fucking thing about their diet as soon as you meat them.”

NerrSnerr · 27/08/2019 22:01

Personally I think some vegans are arseholes towards meat eaters (and clearly vegetarians judging from that other thread) and some meat eaters are arseholes towards vegans and vegetarians. I'm a vegetarian so don't think we're arseholes to anyone.

I think that basically a certain amount of people in the world are arseholes. 10%, maybe 20% so it seems like more meat eaters are being hostile but that's because there's more meat eaters to start with.

It's like the cyclist vs driver debate isn't it?

user1493759849 · 27/08/2019 22:02

@kikisparks

“Every fucking vegan will tell you every fucking thing about their diet as soon as you meat them.”

Ba ha ha ha ha!!! 😂 As soon as you MEAT them! 😂

MamaOomMowWow · 27/08/2019 22:02

I agree OP. I have to hide most of the posts about vegans because there are so many hostile posters.
