To find mumsnet so hostile to vegans?

No based solely on but inspired by a couple of threads in the last few days. I’m not quite vegan yet but plan to be fully by the next few months and none of my friends, about quarter of whom at vegan are not sanctimonious or preachy at all.

Also please stop bashing vegan cakes! They’re yummy!!

Yea society in general is pretty hostile to vegans but mumsnet is particularly bad imo. I’ve seen everything said from vegans lacking in protein to ageing rapidly Hmm
I think mumsnet is pretty conservative, middle class and mainstream so it’s unsurprising really.

Clutterbugsmum · 27/08/2019 17:42

Why do you care.

Sorry but most people don't care what you or anyone else eats. Just live your life without having to broadcast that you are a vegan.

ItsGoingTibiaK · 27/08/2019 17:43

What’s the difference between “MN is hostile to vegans” and “Vegans are sanctimonious and preachy”?

RebornFlame · 27/08/2019 17:43

I missed the vegan/formula milk thread. Can someone link it please?

MN isn't hostile to 'trans people' it's hostile to abusive males hijacking the trans label to reverse hard won rights and dignity of women and children. See Rachel McKinnon's disgusting comments on the terminal cancer of Magdalen Berns for just one example. I'm not going to write the infantile name of the poster I'm replying to but you know who you are.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 27/08/2019 17:45

I had a nice vegan cake at someone’s birthday (they were allergic to eggs and dairy).

If you want to see frothing and eyes rolling, say your kids got to private school.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 27/08/2019 17:45

It's because ATM it's the new thing, and it's exciting for anyone who is becoming/is vegan but dull as fuck to listen vegans wax lyrical about what they're eating and tbh I have met quite a lot and they never shut up about it. I don't care what anyone eats,I just don't want to hear about it.

Di1979 · 27/08/2019 17:45

You are not a vegan if you eat eggs...

LolaSmiles · 27/08/2019 17:46

I think MN is a fairly broad church but just like real life people have an issue with being lectured about how to live their lifem

The funniest vegan thread lately was the one where it was claimed people could self-ID as a vegan but still eat eggs and loads of other animal products. Apparently anyone expecting the word vegan to mean vegan was mean and nasty and intolerant and needed to open their mind. Grin

RebornFlame · 27/08/2019 17:46

Why do I care? Because MN is one of the few safe spaces online for women to talk about their lives openly and it saddens me that so sides of life are not accepted as easily as others. Mn was a godsend to me a a new and clueless mother 6 years ago and was great when I felt berated for feedinggg past 18 months. That’s the open support and solidarity that’s missing from most of the online world for women. I digress......

It is people's choices what they eat and don't eat. I have some vegan friends and I have to say, a lot of them are quite preachy even when they say they aren't. It is the passive aggressive comments that are the worst. I respect their views but there isn't a need to inflict them on me. They were all eating meat a few years ago. So they were doing exactly what I am doing.

I’ll try and link the threads in question

I wouldn’t. MNHQ takes a dim view of TAAT.

Brian9600 · 27/08/2019 17:48

I don't actually mind preachy vegans. If you think something is deeply wrong (such as eating meat) it's fair enough to say so- I'd speak up if I saw someone stealing, say, and I suppose for some vegans eating meat is similarly wrong.

OTOH I don't actually now any vegans so have never encountered a preachy one. I might change my mind if I did.

Brian9600 · 27/08/2019 17:49

*know

NeelixFelicis · 27/08/2019 17:51

YABU.

It isn't hostility towards vegans. It's hostility towards sanctimonious, preachy, pseudo-superior vegans.
Not veganism as a whole.

WorraLiberty · 27/08/2019 17:55

It saddens you that some people don't like the food you eat?

Raphael34 · 27/08/2019 18:00

People get hostile because it’s ridiculous how vegans are unable to be vegan without telling people. No one gives a fuck about your diet. Why have you started a whole thread about it? And it’s funny how people are only vegan when it suits them. You’re probably using thousands of animal products a day out of convenience

Raphael34 · 27/08/2019 18:01

Do you eat eggs?? Grin

Likethebattle · 27/08/2019 18:02

Erm they aren’t delicious though. I tried some 🤢

NeelixFelicis · 27/08/2019 18:08

Do you think those people who deeply believe abortion is wrong, have the right to protest outside clinics and tell other women they are terrible people for having one?

Brian9600 · 27/08/2019 18:13

Do you think those people who deeply believe abortion is wrong, have the right to protest outside clinics and tell other women they are terrible people for having one?

No of course not- that's harrassment and not remotely equivalent. I would support their right to put forward their views legally though, despite the fact I disagree with them.

I see vegans as more like Jehovah's Witnesses- I'm not interested but it certainly doesn't annoy me.

AutumnCrow · 27/08/2019 18:15

I have huge admiration for vegans. I think we'll all end up pretty much part-time vegans if we want the planet to survive (because of land use) within a generation.

I've experimented with lots of recipes.

If we all did a little, if we were all part-time vegan-style eaters, it's surely better than the 'all or nothing' ideology of some fairly radical vegans who find views like mine to be some kind of betrayal. I do get why they are radical, I really do, but I'm a realist when it comes to mainstreaming ideas.

And we have to fix the planet pretty damn quick.

Coffeeandchocolate9 · 27/08/2019 18:26

It annoyed me to see a vegan about 3 posts into a thread from a vegetarian, come along and bash the veggie for "not making any difference" and "still sponsoring suffering and cruelty". I wonder if the has ever, in the history of the internet, been anybody confronted with such aggression who as a result said "fair cop Gov I'm going to be just like you". I doubt the has ever even been one, it just turns people away.

NerrSnerr · 27/08/2019 18:32

I think the problem is that you remember the people who are hostile and not the many reasonable people. The post PP just mentioned where a vegan got massively sanctimonious because a vegetarian wanted vegetarian choices as well as vegan stuck in my brain too. I'm sure other reasonable vegans posted but I don't remember that.

I'm vegetarian, I even pushed the boat out and bought a vegan cookbook the other day but I don't give a shit what others eat.
