How often do you wash your towels?

I wash mine after two goes and I regularly bleach... husband thinks I'm mental? AIBU??

I love these threads. I really do grin

^“So bad for the environment” from people who eat meat, fly to their holiday in the US/Europe/Asia, drive, buy everything wrapped in plastic.

Unless you are as minimal as possible you don’t get to use the environment card on these threads.^

You don’t knot anything about people commenting on the wastefulness if clean towels every shower but they are likely to be at least slightly more environmentally conscious than those who do it. It is probably only in recent years because of the invention of the tumble dryer that people are able to do it. This would be a small change to benefit the environment with very little sacrifice involved.

spanglydangly · 27/08/2019 11:28

@Maybe2020 and now your home cooked meals..... you really are the most perfect housewife in the world, I'm sure your husband must thank his lucky stars he chose so well.

No my house does not smell of filth and grime, I'm in that lovely happy medium place so bore off and go bleach everything again!

Maybe2020 · 27/08/2019 11:29

That’s fair enough I honestly didn’t mean it inthat way I odviously don’t know about someone’s cleanliness through mn. I just mean it as I would find it rotten myself to use a dirty towel and yeah probably if I saw someone doing it too, but that’s my opinion.
My friend washes her underwear with tea towels and I called her a tramp😂it’s just something I wouldn’t do.
I don’t think it’s to do with class either, I’m also not a snob.
Far from it tbh.

Maybe2020 · 27/08/2019 11:31

Did I say I was the perfect housewife? @spanglydangly 😂 he does tbh I’m an amazing wife.
Oh I will and live happily in my clean spotless home.

Deadringer · 27/08/2019 11:33

I wash towels if they start to whiff. I wash clothes if they are stained or whiffy. I don't wash things unless they are dirty, that's the point of washing. I avoid white towels and sheets mostly because of the need to bleach them to keep them white. I am definitely a slattern and I don't give a shite.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 27/08/2019 11:33

You don’t knot anything about people commenting

What is the likelihood of everyone who has used the environment card being meat free, pet free, child free, (on mumsnet?) car free, plastic free, plane travel free?

InsertFunnyUsername · 27/08/2019 11:35

Well I didn't take offence to it as a minging weekly towel washer Wink but obviously some people will.

I said earlier there are many things I wouldn't do re using a top or leggings (jeans seem fine to re use if it was a quick school run) I realise that makes no sense but hey ho.

I know someone who uses a panty line near enough every single day because she doesnt like the idea of sitting in her 'own juices' No excessive discharge problems etc just a raging weirdo....

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 27/08/2019 11:35

Doesn’t buy any new clothes or anything from China or anywhere else that requires a plane to transport it?

Maybe2020 · 27/08/2019 11:35

Fair play @Deadringer

QueenBlueberries · 27/08/2019 11:37

No need to bleach white fabric if it gets a bit yellow, just normal detergent and a hot wash. I'm with @Deadringer it's the same in my house. If dirty, wash. If not, re-use. Simple.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 27/08/2019 11:37

This would be a small change to benefit the environment with very little sacrifice involved.

On the last towel thread I told how I use hand towels to dry off instead of a bath towel. Which automatically halves my towel washing loads and detergent use/energy use to wash them etc I was called bonkers and told it was child cruelty to make my child dry with a hand towel. Possibly by some of the people who are on this thread.

CountSnackula · 27/08/2019 11:39

I tend to wash them if they're still damp from the previous use. That means that hand and tea towels end up in every load of washing, but shower towels generally last longer (especially in summer). Shower towels also go in the wash if they start to smell, but we hang them up to dry, or put them on the radiators in winter, so it's usually not a problem.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 27/08/2019 11:39

No the snobbery goes the other way. Snobbery towards people who like clean houses. On MN it’s trendy not to clean.

You sound like a 1960s wife, the ones where the husband was shagging the secretary.

You see I'm not an amazing wife, I'm a person, I'm me, when I married I didn't aim to be an amazing wife that's good because they cooked, cleaned and did home cooked meals, we can both do that, I mean that shit is easy. But what we are gods at is being amazing partners.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 27/08/2019 11:40

Unless you have your cleaner do it Wink

CecilyP · 27/08/2019 11:41

No likelihood at all but are probably less likely to use these things than people who have clean towels daily and tumble dry after washing. As I said it is such a tiny sacrifice that it’s no hardship at all.

Carthage · 27/08/2019 11:42

OP I'm with your DH. My towels don't smell and neither do I. When you get people on these threads who don't even wash their hands/use hand cleanser after going to the loo and they walk amongst us, using a towel for a week isn't going to kill you.

InsertFunnyUsername · 27/08/2019 11:45

I dont think most people think its trendy not to clean, just that they dont really give a shit about drying themselves with a towel they used the day before.

The environment excuse I agree, it seems to be spouted on all these threads. When majority of the time it's because people are lazy, like myself. I cant pretend to do things for the environment when I'm sitting on MN eating my bacon sandwich while my Ambi pur puffs away in the background.

CecilyP · 27/08/2019 11:46

No I think that’s quite laudable, and depending on the size of the child, a hand towel may be equivalent to a bath towel for an adult!

Benjispruce · 27/08/2019 11:48

Less to do with class, more to do with intelligence . I blame the parents and the cleaning product manufacturers. Grin

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 27/08/2019 11:50

No likelihood at all

Exactly. They choose how they want to damage the environment in their own way, because it suits them. they don’t get to sit in judgement of others for choosing different ways.

probably less likely to use these things than people who have clean towels daily and tumble dry after washing. As I said it is such a tiny sacrifice that it’s no hardship at all.

I wash towels after every use. I don’t tumble dry. I use half size towels, I use cloth sanitary products, I don’t buy new clothes. At all. (Charity shop, eBay) I walk everywhere I can, I have had one foreign holiday in my adult life. I stopped at two children, I avoid buying anything with plastic wherever possible, I use freecycle, and FB swapping pages. I guarantee you there are people on this thread who are screeching about the environment that have done and will continue to do far more damage to the environment than my use of towels does. And much of it will be for convenience and pleasure that could easily be sacrificed.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 27/08/2019 11:52

Forgive me, I do buy new clothes in the form of school uniform. Mostly. But the uniform swap centres are picking up in popularity here which is great.

CecilyP · 27/08/2019 11:53

No I can’t claim my weekly towel change is for the environment; it is just what I have always done. I don’t own a tumble dryer so just think of all the wet towels that would be hanging around the house during wet weather if I changed daily. However, if I was going to change to daily now, I can see how that would be bad for the environment.

SachaStark · 27/08/2019 11:56

Ewwww, why would you want to put bleach on your towels?! They have direct contact with your skin, including intimate areas! Whack some white vinegar in the wash if you need to whiten them up.

Urgh, hate bleach.

kaytee87 · 27/08/2019 11:57

Once, maybe twice a week. Hand towel more frequently.
If they're hung up properly to dry I don't see the need to wash them more often.
I wash them on 60• except when ds had a tummy bug then it was 90•
No bleach.
