AIBU to think dogs should be banned from parks?

They're everywhere, crapping, barking, smelling one another's arses and fighting. Then there are those jumpy ones trying to get a lick of a child's face before bounding off to piss up the nearest tree. Not everyone likes dogs and they spoil the park for kids. I'd love to see them allocated their own area away from the rest of the park where like minded dog owners can all hangout together picking up their pet's turds and convincing each other that "he's usually so gentle". AIBU??

if it is the case that the only way a dog can get what it needs is to run freely then you shouldn't have a dog unless you have access to spaces where the dog can run freely without inconvenience in people.

katesalwayslate · 27/08/2019 13:01

Not everyone likes kids - should they be banned too?

A toddler attack is very unlikely to cause serious injury or death.

Agree with this 100%. If your set up doesn't allow for this, a dog isn't for you. Half of the problems with dogs I think is that there are so many of them in unsuitable environments - flats, houses with tiny gardens, owned by people who are out of the house working all day etc - which can't be adequately compensated for with a run around a crowded urban park.

dottiedodah · 27/08/2019 13:10

We are on the South Coast and our play areas are seperate to the rest of the park .Likewise at the beach ,certain parts are sectioned off during the Summer Months to enable families to enjoy some dog free space .No problems at all .Many dogs are friendly, and well behaved (as are their owners!.)Sadly a few idiots who cant pick up poo or control their dogs give everyone else a bad name.I appreciate not everyone is a dog fan ,and a few weeks ago an elderly lady asked if I could put my dog on a lead as SOMEONE ELSES DOG had knocked her over! I said Of Course No Problems. But imagine some people telling her to Buzz Off!

Mammatino · 27/08/2019 13:10

There are great dog owners who have well trained pleasant animals, they clean up after them and respect that other people may be intimidated. Some great parents who teach the kids to pick up the litter, not to shove inquisitive hands into strange dogs eyes and to respect that other people want quiet enjoyment of the park too. I bet both of these groups respect laws and pay taxes to ensure our parks are cared for. Then there are the others who can't understand that it's their awful animals, awful kids and lack of respect ruin it for the other kind.

Biancadelrioisback · 27/08/2019 13:13

So at my local park this weekend I had to move several plastic bottles, some underwear, a soiled nappy and navigate the broken glass. This is all human mess. And it's dogs who should be banned?

Alsohuman · 27/08/2019 13:14

I’ve just pointed out that we walk ours off lead at times when they don’t inconvenience other people. Although why other people’s council tax should be worth more than mine is a mystery to me.

M3lon · 27/08/2019 13:17

Well this is thread is the perfect answer to the question my DH asked me the other day: "But why don't you want a dog?"

I mean the turd collecting, the plastic waste, the dog food, the training that fractures under the smallest provocation, the people who think kids should be gagged/banned from parks, just fucking all of it.

A hundred years from now teachers will be explaining to thesurviving kids in the underground bunkers that back in the days when you could live on the surface of the planet, people used to keep dangerous animals as pets and lavish their crazy consumerist lifestyle on THEM too.....what's that little Jonny? Oh well yes, some of them did get badly bitten and sometimes babies and small children got killed but they still did it because....yeah I have no fecking idea why....the fuckers killed the planet - who knows what they were thinking...

ClaraThePigeon · 27/08/2019 13:21

Yes, it's really dogs that are killing the planet, and not the billions of humans, cars, plane travel, industry, meat and luxury goods. Don't be so fucking stupid.

This. Every time the kids at the local High School go for lunch, they leave a massive trail of litter behind them from the high street back to the school. It's disgusting.

This.

You can't ban all of something because a small number make some people's lives unpleasant for short periods.

Drabarni · 27/08/2019 13:24

Yabu, dogs need to go somewhere. I'd ban some bad owners though.
All the complaints on here is just bad ownership.
Some people treat them on a par with humans, even call them their babies. They become obsessed with their little darlings and let them behave appallingly.
Ban the bad owners.

HauntedPinecone · 27/08/2019 13:24

Do kids run up to dogs though?

Yes. All the time. It has been a constant throughout my years of dog ownership.

OneStepSideways · 27/08/2019 13:25

I think dog-free parks would be great! Then you can have a picnic without being jumped on.

ClaraThePigeon · 27/08/2019 13:26

Do kids run up to dogs though?

Yes. Absolutely. I often experience this. I had a random kid trying to get into my house the other day because she wanted to cuddle my smaller dog, who is very cute, but is terrified of children.

Fuma · 27/08/2019 13:27

Pet ownership is one of the many human activities that are harming the planet, yes, along with the other activities you list. It also harms other humans in direct and immediate ways. Dogs don't exist in an independent state of pre-lapsarian grace and beauty.

DoomsdayCult · 27/08/2019 13:28

I think instead of just fines for not picking up dog poo or controlling/keeping them on a lead that individual dog owners can also get banned from certain human friendly parks. Kind of like how belligerent brawling tossers can get banned from certain pubs.

There should of course be at least one dog friendly park every square mile where no ban can happen.

ClaraThePigeon · 27/08/2019 13:29

Pretty much anything humans do harms the planet, but some things(not dogs) are much bigger contributors than others(Having children is about the biggest)

dollydaydream114 · 27/08/2019 13:31

I find kids a lot more annoying than dogs, and about half as hygienic.

Alsohuman · 27/08/2019 13:33

So you want dogs banned 365 days a year so you can have a two hour picnic @OneStepSideways. This reminds me of people complaining about smokers outside the pub on a sunny day. Those smokers are there in the rain and cold most of the year when nobody else would dream of it. Same with dog walkers, you wouldn’t turn a hair on a foggy December morning.

PookieDo · 27/08/2019 13:34

Yes kids do run up to dogs they also don’t look where they are going on scooters and bikes too.

I don’t believe DC can be compared to a dangerous dog no, but I do not agree with this argument that children have priority to green open spaces more than dogs and their owners.

I am another person who also chooses to walk the dog in places and at times when it is not likely kids will be around. I took my dog to the local pub a few weeks ago at 8.30pm, on a lead, under a beer garden table on a Friday night and ended up leaving because the rioting children running around were unpleasant for us all.

I have chosen to only have 2 children. I have a dog because he was going to have to go to rescue otherwise and for companionship. I don’t have a partner and my DC will leave home in the not so distant future. Perhaps it is a selfish, planet ruining way of living my life but I don’t fly on planes, I recycle and don’t eat much meat. The dog eats good quality dry food. I pick up all his poo in biodegradable bags. I walk him on leads. I don’t let him run up to people. I try to train him. I want his little life to be a nice one. I don’t begrudge children having nice lives but there is a balance where everyone should be able to tolerate each other too

It’s not bad ownership to value your pet.

DawgLover · 27/08/2019 13:38

Pet ownership and interaction is also known to provide benefits to those suffering from mental ill health and a variety of conditions.

We have an enclosed dog area in our local park. I have lost count of the number of families who have set up a disposable bbq within the enclosure and then happily left the hot coals behind. A hammock was set up just last week for some guys to rest in between downing cheap cider Hmm and kids climbing the fence to play ball games within it are a common day occurrence. I'd love more dog wardens and enforcement of correctly using that area.

MissEliza · 27/08/2019 13:42

Since I've had a dog and started walking through our local park twice a day. I've found out how filthy humans are. It's amazing how much crap people drop at their backsides. Moreover I think most dogs are better behaved than the kids I see hanging around the park. YABU
