To ask for your cringey wedding stories?

Was at the wedding of my sister's best friend yesterday. The bride sang "Total Eclipse Of The Heart", as she was walking down the aisle. She's a lovely woman but christ she cannot sing (though I think it would have been cringe even if she was Adele). The husband didn't know she was going to sing and seemed very taken aback by her it.

There was also a wedding a few years ago where the couple had their 4 year old stand next to the vicar and try and read out their vows for them. Being 4, he struggled and everybody was waiting awkwardly while the vicar was trying to help him pronounce words.

So, am I being unreasonable to ask for your cringe wedding stories?

@Cosyjimjamsforautumn oh my fucking god!!!! That one wins hands down, well I hope it does because I'd hate to think of anything worse happening!

SnugglySnerd · 26/08/2019 17:15

We attended an evening do for one of dh's colleagues who I had never met before. He clearly had done a few lines, he was absolutely wired.

divafever99 · 26/08/2019 17:15

My sil announced her pregnancy at my wedding. I still have no idea why anyone would think this was a good idea.

TigerJoy · 26/08/2019 17:16

This is my favourite thread of all time on mumsnet

Not sure this counts as it is more a near miss...

I was a child going to a relative's wedding. Arrive at his (the groom's) parent's house before the wedding and he is kicking off as his car had been keyed by the bride's brothers the night before. Because they saw him at the pub that evening with the bride's best friend / MOH. Because he was having an affair with her, and apparently had been for some time.

Wedding was cancelled that morning, groom's parents went on the honeymoon as they'd paid for it.

To be fair my cousin married the MOH and they've been together for 30+ years, had multiple children, so I suppose it all worked out for the best in the end.

Have created another profile as this will out me for sure, but felt I had to share two weddings I have been to that always come to mind😏😉

Wedding one - Grooms brothers aged 19 and 22ish were trying to impress a 18 year old girl on the brides side (her cousins daughter) all day they were all over her like a rash, at the reception they both asked her to dance were plying her with drinks etc when before you know it a fight broke out between them both, everyone suddenly became involved. Women were grabbing their kids and running towards the exit as glasses were been thrown all around them it was actually scary at how it changed so quickly. Police arrived and arrested 9 men including the brides father! As they were all being loaded in to the back of a police van the brides mother has heart attack! The bride spent her wedding night and her honeymoon at the hospital by her mums beside! Luckily she was fine after a few days but it was touch and go! The groom completely disowned his family and even changed his surname! We are not allowed to talk about that wedding 🤣

Wedding two, my personal fave! - Groom is a relation to me so all my family are there, he married a girl from the gypsy community. Nice girl, lovely church service, bride did wear a huge dress but every one agreed she looked lovely!
Headed to the reception, brilliant buffet more then enough for everyone, both families getting on great!
Suddenly about 8pm evening guests started to appear - majority from the brides side all from the gypsy community - well what can I say it was like something from one of them programmes they were dressed in very little that left not much to imagination (I wear more to bed) head to toe in sequins and diamonds with big feathers etc sticking to their head pieces! As we are all gawping with our jaws hitting the floor, we realise My Nan is grabbing a chair and heading towards the dance floor, she though a Cabaret was about to start and was heading towards the edge of the dance floor to grab a good spot, telling everyone to be quick otherwise they would miss out!
These young girls hit the dance floor and sure had some impressive moves (moves I wouldn’t even do in the bedroom lol)!
My Nan and her 2 sisters were all sat at the side on chairs wondering what was happening!
The men from the grooms side were all at the bar staring with big smiles on their faces when a couple of them spotted their wives looking over. Giving the other men a heads up and nudge that wives were watching them they all suddenly very sheepishly came and sat down with their families! I may add the wives made sure that the chair that their husbands sat on was with their backs to the dance floor! Any time a bloke said he was of to the bar for a drink, that meant he had to cross the dance floor it was met with daggers from their wife!
It was a brilliant night and I was sad to leave earlier then expected but My Grandad came over bad and needed fresh air...he said it was something he had eaten?! Everyone else seemed fine?! 😂😉

needasleep · 26/08/2019 17:24

Cousins wedding and they decided to play Mr & Mrs at the reception with questions like who is the noisiest in bed, do your friends, family and more importantly your grandparents need to know this

Cocolapew · 26/08/2019 17:28

Tigerjoy there's another great wedding thread in classics.

Sicario · 26/08/2019 17:43

To the audience's delight, father of the bride delivered a blistering speech calling out the groom's parents for not stumping up the five grand they had promised towards the wedding costs. They had contributed precisely nothing, and the bride and groom had had to borrow the extra money from the bank.

Cue groom's mother stomping off, gathering her things up and trying to leave the hotel without paying for her room.

Truth be told, the groom and his family were all rough as arseholes and you wouldn't have wanted to leave your wallet lying around near any of them. They divorced after he ran up massive debts and they both declared themselves bankrupt.

EnglishRose13 · 26/08/2019 18:46

At my brothers wedding, my SIL and her mum doing the "father-daughter dance" (her dad isn't in the picture and her step dad had died years before) to "How Do I" while looking into each other's eyes and singing to each other. The whole thing was really cringy.

At another wedding, the groom thanked individuals for their help / input into the wedding, complete with handing out gifts or bouquets of flowers. His mum had done absolutely nothing to help towards the wedding so didn't get a mention. I don't think it was an intentional dig, I just don't think the groom thought he should mention her as there was nothing to thank her for. His mum left and didn't return.

ACPC · 26/08/2019 23:12

My funniest moment was a best man pissed and he kept swearing during his speech, the grooms mother kept huffing and tutting, he swung his hand round and his cufflink caught her hat. He was oblivious to this kept waving his arm and swearing while MOG was clamping her hat onto her head and looking traumatisedGrin

lisasimpsonssaxophone · 26/08/2019 23:26

A recent wedding where the entire best man’s speech was basically just a list of all the time the groom had been arrested for drunk driving. It wasn’t funny. It was also very very VERY long (why do so many Best Men act like they’ve been given a full-length Netflix special?!)

Actually, having said that, at the other end of the spectrum was a wedding I went to last year where the groom and best man had had some kind of falling out. When it was his turn the best man literally just stood up and went ‘cheers everyone’ and sat back down again. The friend who was acting as MC basically stepped in and ad-libbed a best man speech in his place!

Oh, then there was the (again, very very long) Father of the Bride speech which repeatedly made reference to how chubby his daughter used to be and how greedy she always was throughout her childhood and teens. The (now incredibly skinny) bride laughed along with it, but as her former flatmate and knowing how massively disordered her body image and relationship with food was, I just sat there thinking ‘oh... it all makes sense now’ Sad

We attended a Wednesday wedding in a lovely venue. As it was a Wednesday very few of the couples friends turned up, mostly due to work commitments. The groom was raging. In his speech he cursed everyone that had refused the invitation saying he only cared about the ones there from now on.
He finished his speech with ‘I fucking love you, right’ to his beautiful bride. I laughed so hard. People are mad!

ColonelCathcart · 27/08/2019 16:32

I went to a wedding at the weekend and the bride had a carpet thing down the aisle which had a tribute to her (living) dad written on it. I was a bit worried the first dance was going to end up like the wedding @Cosyjimjamsforautumn went to, but fortunately it didn’t go that way!

Have name changed for this cos... well who knows who reads these threads!

Groom got very drunk at the reception and proceeded to have an actual 'willy off' with the best man at the end of the night when the lights had come on.

They literally stood there with their trousers round their ankles and it all hanging out, waggling them around like effing helicopters! Shock

Guests and family didn't know where to look. Some laughed and others looked pissed.

Marriage lasted one year.

SweetMarmalade · 27/08/2019 18:03

We were told by sil’s brother (so not a direct relative) that invites for their forthcoming wedding would be sent out in the New Year! We were promptly told by the bride to be that yes they were being sent out and that ours was for the EVENING do! Fine, no issue, didn’t react, make a face, nothing.

No invite ever arrived Grin it wasn’t lost in the post, a portion of our side of the family just wasn’t invited which is absolutely fine, the only issue I had was being told we were invited in the first place!

Rude!

Adultchild · 27/08/2019 18:03

Ok did she actually walk down the aisle singing "turn around, every now and then I get a little bit closer"... because I would not have been able to stop laughing!!!
Creepiest, cringiest thing ever!

Sorrywhat · 27/08/2019 18:09

Lots of best man speeches being discussed. Well, my MIL made an impromptu speech where she almost immediately burst into tears about how proud she was of her son but not one mention about me nor us as a couple. She ended her speech by embracing him in a hug and then turned to me and asked me to ‘look after him’ despite us living together for 2 years already.
I still look back and despise that moment of my wedding.

SweetMarmalade · 27/08/2019 18:11

Oh and one more.

Bride & Groom decides they would get their Ds christened after taking their vows!

The vicar decided she would break out in song, only it was the worst singing voice I’d ever heard!

Shoulders were shaking all through the church while the B&G stood there wide eyed & their poor Ds looked totally puzzled by the ‘entertainment’!

One of the funniest encounters ever!

NatNoo · 27/08/2019 18:23

These are hilarious!
Went to a wedding where we later found out the bride had been about 12 weeks pregnant. She wasn’t showing but her boobs had clearly increased in size and her quite tight strapless dress had not been adjusted to accommodate this....her boobs were threatening to pop out throughout the day and eventually halfway through the first dance they made a break for it, the groom had no idea what was happening and whilst she was trying to adjust herself and he attempted to twirl her around resulting in many of the guests getting an eyeful of boobage. Awkward!

Windydaysuponus · 27/08/2019 18:30

Once went to one in a church where the bride was obviously pregnant (groom's friends were told to keep quiet as the ils didn't know!!)
As they approached the altar groom quickly asked his df to stand with him.
His df dutifully accepted...
Complete with his The Fonz style leather jacket!

FairfaxAikman · 27/08/2019 18:31

My wedding!
My dad started his speech with: "I was told to keep it clean............so cling film seemed the best way".
He then spent a whole five minutes trying to get the clingfilm off his folded speech.

mumoftinyterrors · 27/08/2019 18:47

I went to a wedding where the bride entered the church and walked up the aisle to “if you’re not the one” and proceeded to lip sync the lyrics to her husband to be. Cringe 😣

Adultchild · 27/08/2019 18:59

I always think of "cringey" meaning when the do is ott romantic rather than plain awful. But hey, I have stories from each type!

My own wedding, my dad was collecting me and my hub to be (now ex) and he had not cleaned his car... inside or out. It was full of straw. Good thing it wasnt a full on white wedding of bridezilla!

My stepmother wore leggings and a t-shirt. And, having insisted that I invite her parents, sat with them and glared at everyone throughout the day.

My dad hadn't written a speech despite me asking him to, so basically said nothing, and my mum cut the cake in massive portions so it ran out super quickly.

And, my own mess up - I failed to recognise my own cousin... although admittedly she had gone from 12 to 17 since I'd last seen her! I still feel terrible about that!

Oh and everyone went home early.

Despite that, the groom and I had a lovely day. It was the best day of our marriage and I'm pleased the marriage ended a few years later Grin
