Just killed this hideous creature!
It was making a very high pitched buzzing noise - sounded like a mosquito but don’t think it is.
It was about 1.5 inches in length.
Any ideas?

It's an ichneumon wasp. Totally harmless. Sad.

TheBabyAteMyBrain · 24/08/2019 23:40

Well it looks like a tango'd wasp on steroids...

LittleFairywren · 24/08/2019 23:44

Poor thing Sad

annie987 · 24/08/2019 23:47

Poor thing? It was enormous and kept dive bombing at my head and buzzing super loudly!

VLCDoingIt · 24/08/2019 23:48

It's beautiful :(

LittleFairywren · 24/08/2019 23:50

Don't be pathetic. You're a grown adult. You had no need to kill it.

DeepDarkWoods · 24/08/2019 23:50

Poor thing

Rubyupbeat · 24/08/2019 23:56

Oh...its ogly and buzzes, let's kill it!! Ver sad indeed

mbb1 · 25/08/2019 00:08

Well I'd have killed it too.

JaceLancs · 25/08/2019 00:09

Can anyone help me identify this mating pair - they are nesting behind my wing mirror!

To ask what the hell this is???!
WhatWhyWhen · 25/08/2019 00:10

I’d have tried to waft it out of the window or glass catch it.

Failing that I’d have killed it too!

JaceLancs · 25/08/2019 00:11

One is brown with an orange dot other is exact shape but black n white stripy
Perhaps I’ll have tortoiseshell or tabby eggs lol

Peanutbatter · 25/08/2019 00:15

I think they are shield bugs.

Hawkmoth · 25/08/2019 00:16

Red legged shieldbug.

Duck90 · 25/08/2019 00:25

Kill first, ask questions later!!! Could you not have walked away for a bit, it would have moved on.

PhoenixIsFlying · 25/08/2019 00:27

Humans have been the dominant species on earth for the last fifty thousand years. This is set to change within an individual's lifespan as artificial intelligence develops and sentience in an autonomous non-organic being emerges. During our time the beauty of nature, the nature of humans, and the age of artificial consciousness will transform our world.
Humans will only continue to flourish if we persuade those species that emerge with sentience that our shared existence is to the advantage of all life on earth.

Mumsymumphy · 25/08/2019 00:53

@JaceLancs

It's a forest shield bug, had one in my garden a few weeks ago

RocketRacoonsFurryBalls · 25/08/2019 01:03

You killed a great flying prawn. At least add it to a stir fry. Waste not, want not.

gedsxppl · 25/08/2019 01:06

It's an Ichneumonidae, completely harmless and they've been around for at least 20 million years. Sad.

gedsxppl · 25/08/2019 01:09

And also, a shield bug - they let off a horrible smell when they feel threatened. And if you kill them they also let off a smell. I find them to be quiet disgusting, but they're harmless.

TumblingTumbleWeeds · 25/08/2019 01:52

I'm so glad there are a lot of caring & intelligent people on this thread.

They killed an entire wolf pack the other day and morons cheered. Meanwhile I'm relocating venomous snakes that show up on my back door mat and porch. 9 so far this year.

What harm did that little bug do to you?

Toneitdown · 25/08/2019 02:15

I wish I was brave enough to relocate the deadly snakes in my garden! I try to just avoid them but if they're near the house I call in the catchers. They relocate them so I suppose I'm still technically relocating them, just doing it the wussy way Grin

HennyPennyHorror · 25/08/2019 02:58

I hate people killing things. WHY?? What's the point? I live in Australia where we have some truly hideous (and some poisonous) things but we've only ever killed one thing...a redback spider which are highly venomous. Would not have killed that but it was in the house and DH panicked.

DH carried a brown snake away from the house in a snake bag rather than kill it. It was relocated.

Big spiders? They're left alone as they're shy and don't bother anyone except other bugs which they eat!

Stop killing things!

Catkin8 · 25/08/2019 04:42

I'm presuming that all those who are horrified it was killed are vegan? It's somewhat hypocritical if not.

noroominthefridge · 25/08/2019 08:07

NEVER, NEVER squish a shield bug. They smell like death.
