To ask what the hell this is???!

Just killed this hideous creature!
It was making a very high pitched buzzing noise - sounded like a mosquito but don’t think it is.
It was about 1.5 inches in length.
Any ideas?

Looks like some sort of potter wasp to me. Usually very docile and unlikely to sting humans. I usually just use a net to catch any insects that fly into my conservatory... would hate to kill them but if I miss them and they get caught by one of our resident spiders then that is just the circle of life.

I will admit to killing anything that is actively trying to have me for lunch....

It looks horrible, I’d have killed it too in case it was poisonous. I wouldn’t know I know it’s not.
