Just killed this hideous creature!
It was making a very high pitched buzzing noise - sounded like a mosquito but don’t think it is.
It was about 1.5 inches in length.
Any ideas?

What's being vegan got to do with it..? I'm not vegan btw.

Meat is killed for a purpose, food, clothing etc.
There was no need for the bug to be killed and no use for it.
That's why people are saying it didn't need to be killed

Toothproblems · 25/08/2019 08:21

That was in response to catkin

msmith501 · 25/08/2019 08:24

Ichneumonid wasps are great - some even paralyse normal bastard wasps and lay their eggs in them. When the eggs hatch they have an instant source of still-alive paralysed wasp to eat. Result!

PianoTuner567 · 25/08/2019 08:27

henny has just reminded me why I’d never live in Australia. I might need to own a ‘snake bag’ Shock

SongforSal · 25/08/2019 08:32

For fucks sake. You are horrible. What did it do to you to deserve being burnt alive? The human race is screwed with humans like you walking around inflicting pain and death on nature's creatures, for no reason other than dominance and because you can.

sweatypie · 25/08/2019 08:33

@TumblingTumbleWeeds

That's awful, but you can't compare killing w pack of wolves to an insect. Wolves breed less frequently and have a much smaller population(I assume). Insects multiply rapidly.

Having said that, I'd still avoid killing it unless it was in my house and targeting me.

VeganVeganVegan · 25/08/2019 08:37

@Catkin8 exactly what I was thinking.

HennyPennyHorror · 25/08/2019 08:44

Piano no Grin ordinary people don't own them. DH has completed training as a handler. Normally you would not see brown snakes...but we live rurally and our neighbour had pulled up a load of old fencing...disturbing the residents.

CookPassBabtridge · 25/08/2019 08:48

Sometimes I feel like hypocritical because I do kill flies and mosquitoes, but I cringe at all the squashed spider posts on facebook at the moment.. people taking pride in killing something harmless. But then maybe some peope think that way about flies and mozzies!

Fleetheart · 25/08/2019 08:49

Well OP, in the world that is mumsnet it seems as though YABVU indeed 😂. At least we all know what it is now.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 25/08/2019 08:56

msmith501 That is amazing!

Catkin8 · 25/08/2019 12:13

@toothproblems It's hypocritical because in modern day society we don't need to slaughter animals for food or clothing. I agree that this insect didn't need to be killed - but outrage at this would be far better spent aimed at the meat industry which kills thousands and thousands of animals unnecessarily.

ThirstyGhost · 25/08/2019 12:43

OP if you'd squished it and then ate it, they'd all be fine with it. Next time, eh.

Deadsetgo · 25/08/2019 12:45

I’d have killed it as well OP. Sick of being stung

ilovethebeach23 · 25/08/2019 12:48

Just so you know for next time, the long protrusion pointing out from her end is an ovipositor and is used to lay her eggs - not a sting or anything Smile

writersbeenblocked · 25/08/2019 12:55

For all OP knew, it could have been a dangerous insect - we don't even know if she lives in the UK! And I wonder if any of the people clutching violins on this thread have ever heard of entomophobia.

KUGA · 25/08/2019 13:13

I would have done the same especially as it was attacking you.
The Forest Shield bug is common in gardens.completely harmless too.

RaininSummer · 25/08/2019 13:19

Catkin - don't be daft. Totally different to kill things for food (although as it happens I don't eat meat). So sad to see any creature being killed because it is annoying a human although I appreciate it sometimes happens (couldn't deal with my plague of mice any other way).

Skittlenommer · 25/08/2019 13:24

I'm presuming that all those who are horrified it was killed are vegan? It's somewhat hypocritical if not

This! Also I can’t believe people still kill bugs! Disgusting behaviour! Angry

TSSDNCOP · 25/08/2019 13:34

Henny your post is the reason I love Australians. Happy to live in a country filled to the brim with things that can kill you with a single glance. Alas, it’s also the reason I’ll never be able to visit you because a snake bag is just a bridge too far.

Pumperthepumper · 25/08/2019 13:41

I take it all the people who say you have to be vegan (to not be a hypocrite in not killing bugs) don’t recycle? It’s a bit hypocritical to recycle if you’re not going the whole hog and living a 100% eco friendly lifestyle.

sheshootssheimplores · 25/08/2019 13:45

Fucking he’ll if that thing was diving bombing me I’d have fire bombed it. Never seen one of those before!!!!

Skittlenommer · 25/08/2019 13:45

I’m vegan, I recycle, I don’t eat, use or wear animal products and I’m childfree. Very much practice what I preach!

sheshootssheimplores · 25/08/2019 13:46

skittlenommer are you also including flies in that statement? I can’t stand the vomiting shit covered bastards.

Skittlenommer · 25/08/2019 13:48

Yes! Of course! I catch and release them. I don’t believe I have the right to kill any living being. Only exception being if my life depended on it (being attacked by a bear or something) and thinks like bacteria that cause harm!
