To not want mismatched mugs?

Just a lighthearted one really, but why would people buy random mugs as gifts? I can’t undertand wanting a mug bag doesn’t match anything else. All of my crockery must match. Are other people hoarding mismatched mugs and cups at home?? Are people doing this on purpose? Also cushions! Why would someone buy a random cushion for someone’s house that doesn’t match anything else? This happens all the time in my friendship group. Shouldn’t cushions match the sofa exactly? Can’t stand it!!! AIBU?

I don’t live in the NEXT catalogue

I have a mug cupboard of shame - mostly filled with thoughtful gifts shite from DM for DS. It drives me nuts - I don't want everything matching but I have a range of lovely drinking vessels for the relevant beverage and DS mugs (Harry Potter, minions, theme park) mugs are tucked away and I explain to DM for the umpteenth time that DS has the occasional hot chocolate and doesn't therefore need 4 mugs for this. Her response is that it's just a bit of daft Blush

I hate scatter cushions my mum has loads and you can barely sit on her sofa.

I probably need to let it go--

It's because all matchy-matchy interiors, however expensive the components, fundamentally look like the Next catalogue.

Well, the room sets they create in their stores are matched to an extraordinary degree. When you described your own taste in decor, declaring it to be tasteful, I immediately saw a Next scene.

Cloudyyy · 27/08/2019 17:17

I think that says more about your frames of reference than anything 😂😂😂🤣🤣

Right.

We've done mugs.

Now, what are people's thoughts on matching egg cups....?

Alsohuman · 27/08/2019 18:57

An admission - my garden has a colour scheme of Suffragette colours. If it’s not green, purple or white, it doesn’t get planted.

Green fingers and feminist credentials all in a planting scheme - what's not to love?

Extreme matchy-matchy always speaks to me of a profoundly anxious personality -- someone's who's retreated from the world behind a desperate facade of tweeness. As does the idea of mismatching mugs and sofa cushions representing some kind of primordial chaos.

TwiddleDeDum · 27/08/2019 19:20

Alsohuman, we have a park here which has a statue of Emily Davison, whose parents are from the town and she is buried in a nearby churchyard. She is surrounded by a garden full of plants in the suffragette colours.

Good idea sandman. Waaay up thread, Cloudyyy promised she had Views on Bedding. Please, Cloudyyy, please, could we do bedding? Colours, fabrics, frequency of changing. There is so much potential. I had no idea that mugs could cause such strong opinions. Sadly, the cushion aspect didn't get enough attention.

Lovely garden pics Alsohuman & TwiddleDeDum!

LaurieMarlow · 27/08/2019 20:38

I don’t like matching egg cups either. I’m hardcore like that.

Well, the Next catalogue look is one which is a common frame of reference. Many posters have referenced it on this thread. Confused

Alsohuman · 27/08/2019 20:47

Thank you all. It gives me great pleasure.

tigger1001 · 27/08/2019 20:53

I don't think I own an egg cup!

hlr1987 · 27/08/2019 20:53

I've never told my friends or relatives (outside of mum &sister) but I really, really hate novelty mugs. We have hundreds, but I only personally drink from the pretty espresso cups I have because it makes me happy to look at them. I also have very impractical white linen napkins for the same reason and I would love to get a few sets of decent, handmade crockery but I would be miserable whenever the kids broke something. Its purely that they make me happy to use/ look at and I tend to use the novelty mugs whenever people are round. Easter Egg mugs are ugly but people love them and I don't understand why! I keep them for everyone else and torment myself with open shelves of everything mismatched.

EggysMom · 27/08/2019 20:54

My crockery is a matching set. However our mugs are completely unmatched. Every one has meaning or a memory. DH still likes to make my "home from work" brew in a particular mug that we bought ten years ago (it's very faded). I pick out mugs to represent my mood that day, or how I'm feeling about something that somebody just did. It's fun!

SheilaHammond · 27/08/2019 21:03

Nothing matching here mug-wise. No matching cushions either. Really don’t like matching stuff, it’s so bland.

Cloudyyy · 27/08/2019 21:13

@nettie434 This may be controversial buuut... I really don’t like patterned bedding! ✋ Bed linen must all match in colour and fabric. I then like a textured throw on the top in the same colour.

What is a novelty mug, please?

TheClitterati · 27/08/2019 21:29

Mismatched is the new matched. In my house nothing and everything matches (well it all goes well together to me).

HighNetGirth · 27/08/2019 21:46

K1233, that isn’t a photo cut and paste! It is a photo of actual objects designed to look like Frankenstein crockery, complete with mismatched edges. Yours for a vast sum, by Italian design jokers Seletti.
I actually like it, but DH said no.
