To not want mismatched mugs?

Just a lighthearted one really, but why would people buy random mugs as gifts? I can’t undertand wanting a mug bag doesn’t match anything else. All of my crockery must match. Are other people hoarding mismatched mugs and cups at home?? Are people doing this on purpose? Also cushions! Why would someone buy a random cushion for someone’s house that doesn’t match anything else? This happens all the time in my friendship group. Shouldn’t cushions match the sofa exactly? Can’t stand it!!! AIBU?

@Katzia

Don't mind the mugs. But random cushions. Why would anyone buy someone a random cushion?

I've done this. It was a unique design which was just perfect for the person concerned. I happen to know they love it - we are close enough that o know their taste and if they didn't like it, they would have said.
Having said that, I would only buy a cushion for someone I know very well indeed.

@Teacher22 ha ha The Royle Family 😂🤣 Your mugs sound fabulous! If people are enjoying gaudy clashing mugs then I’m very happy for them. Just so long as they aren’t inflicting their poor taste on other people with tatty mug and cushion gifts! 😂

I'm a stylist and no we never, ever ever ever tell people to match except in very few situations. It always makes me think of the mother of the brise getying her shoes dyed to match their hat, cringe, pedestrian, static and not pleasing. Aesthetics are more pleasing when they contrast, compliment and clash. However , you have your own feelings about how you want things to look and that's great - I encourage this. But for you to think others are wrong for not feeling the same way is tbh with you is odd and signifies and deeper issue with control and self esteem. There's 7 billion people in the world, let go!

Lol at hyacinth over here.

I’d never see matchy matchy as good taste personally.

Alsohuman · 26/08/2019 11:14

No matching mugs in this house. My mum had a wonderful collection of bone china for best. It consisted of a cup, saucer and small plate that matched, but each set was different, they looked lovely.

UndomesticHousewife · 26/08/2019 11:17

I have non matching mugs, I pick up lovely mugs when I see them and sometimes they are too dear to buy a full set so I buy one. So I have a cupboard full of nice mugs that don't match.

TheViceOfReason · 26/08/2019 11:55

I love bright colours and patterns or designs that appealed to me in that moment - so have a cupboard full of "random" mugs of varying sizes, shapes, colours and designs.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 26/08/2019 12:34

My favourite mugs are my “best mummy” one that my (now almost adult) dc bought me as toddlers; and one with my name on that was about an 18th birthday present from my best friend many moons ago. Coffee doesn’t taste quite right in any other mug! I also have one from the game show I was a contestant on, and between us a fair number of souvenir mugs from various holidays. I like matching plates and cutlery, but mugs are way more personal than that!

Cloudyyy · 26/08/2019 13:50

@Alsohuman Oh your mother’s tea set sounds fab! Smile

OP:

I hope you are being facetious. Matching stuff is so unstylish.

DameDoom · 26/08/2019 14:14

I am a proper Hyacinth and can only tolerate my tea or coffee in a thin bone china cup or mug. I cannot abide thick mugs. All of my crockery is also white but I am as common as muck so it’s to be expected.

NoTheresa · 26/08/2019 14:27

Some of my crockery is from Olsson and Jensen, a Danish brand. It is very stylish.

Peanutbutterforever · 26/08/2019 14:39

I respect everyone's right to have whatever vessels give them joy, but I like mine to match as then the cupboard looks calm and makes me happy.

Alsohuman · 26/08/2019 14:39

@Cloudyyy, it was. My mum was incredibly stylish - and well before her time. I gave the china to a much younger 1940s obsessed woman who loved it.

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 26/08/2019 15:57

I buy pieces that make me happy, so an eclectic collection.

Yes this. I'm also far too lazy to go to the trouble of sourcing matching items ana far too clumsy to nit break them! With you on the slogan cushions though.

Oops. Pic on left hence random colon!

Helpfindme · 26/08/2019 17:43

I wouldn't want a mug as a gift, unless it was one i had asked for. We collect Disney ones. When someone buys us a non Disney one it tends to find a new home, via a charity shop.

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 26/08/2019 18:05

woman thing' to have cushions on the bed

I don't get this, sorry! Do you spend a lot of time in your bedroom during the day? I guess it's because I tend to just go in there to go to bed.

Mumpower123 · 26/08/2019 18:28

None matching cushions and cups! What a disaster! WOW!

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 26/08/2019 19:25

More importantly, my mugs have to look and have the right feel if they want to live with me. I can’t stand heavy, clunky mugs. The handle has to be the right shape and located in the middle of the cup...no novelty bullshit location

I understand this about the handle. . I like a particular shape - kind of rounded, like those Big Derby ones, or straight sided but wider at the top than the bottom.

All of my mugs are used because they are beautiful or interesting. I don't like slogan or funny mugs. I must be rare because all of the ones I own have been bought by me! Variety of colours and patterns. I'm also glad I'm not the on,y person who likes different mugs for different drinks. I like to choose a mug as my coffee brews. I suppose it is daft, but it makes me happy.

My house is a complete mismatch of colours and fabrics though - have grey velvet, red velvet and burgandy patterned cushions on a grey velvet sofa. Tartan throw on a blue velvet sofa. And a couple of Ikea winged back ar,chairs with more velvet cushions. Probably not to everyone's taste, but I like it.

Norfolkenchancemate · 27/08/2019 13:50

@Cloudyyy you'd have kittens in my house, I have a corner sofa made up of two different halves of two sofas, non matching anything!! Why so uniform?

Princesspickle777 · 27/08/2019 13:59

Yabu I love collecting different mugs, we have one matching set but it’s my ‘random’ collection that get the most compliments. We also have mismatched but coordinated cushions...it’s safe to say you’d hate our home.

Cloudyyy · 27/08/2019 14:52

Two different sofa halves??!!!!!!!! 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 I’ll probably be flamed for this but... my plants have to match too! Only green and white plants allowed ( and I also grow red roses). I didn’t realise I was so picky my until a friend turned up with a bright purple orchid for the living room ✋🤭 I have kept the orchid out of politeness but it’s running the whole ambience to be honest and I’m not enjoying it 😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
