To not want mismatched mugs?

Cloudyyy · 23/08/2019 22:58

Just a lighthearted one really, but why would people buy random mugs as gifts? I can’t undertand wanting a mug bag doesn’t match anything else. All of my crockery must match. Are other people hoarding mismatched mugs and cups at home?? Are people doing this on purpose? Also cushions! Why would someone buy a random cushion for someone’s house that doesn’t match anything else? This happens all the time in my friendship group. Shouldn’t cushions match the sofa exactly? Can’t stand it!!! AIBU?

I don't have any matching mugs, we all have mugs that reflect what we like, football team, cartoon/movie characters etc.

My cushions don't match either BUT I do like my bedding and curtains to match in my bedroom

GibbonLover · 25/08/2019 14:33

My mugs semi-match. I've got four Starbucks mugs (purchased half price, not nicked) which are chunky with roomy handles - they're for morning coffee. Then, there's five mugs featuring PG Monkey in different designs which are for tea. These were from Debenhams RTC after Christmas. DH has his special Leeds Utd mug, which he uses on matchdays and I've got three mugs with Liverpool-related designs which remind me of home.

Cloudyyy · 25/08/2019 15:01

Ha I won’t get started on my bedding requirements 🤣🤣🤣😂😂

I love having different mugs and choosing one depending on my mood, plus they remind me of different memories! All my cushions have different designs that I think look good together. But we all have quirks OP! I wear exactly the same makeup style every day and can't deviate from it, pretty much for the last 14 years (though I change brands)

GuidoTheKillerPimp · 25/08/2019 17:44

Matched mugs make me think that you bought your entire room from the same next catalogue page... Each to their own, and all that, but I prefer a more organic approach to interiors. None of my wine glasses match because we inevitably manage to smash all but one of every set 🙄

ginghamtablecloths · 25/08/2019 17:48

I hope I've got a happy medium - co-ordinating mugs of similar colours because I'm a 'mugoholic' - there, I've admitted it.

Lincolnfield · 25/08/2019 18:13

Our dinner plates, side plates and dishes all match and we have matching mugs that come out whrn we have friends over for a meal. They're all Denby and we've had them for years. Mugs? That's completely different! Our everyday mugs are one fir each if us. My husband has a flat coated retriever mug - yes we have FCRs! Mine is a sheep mug - one guess why! When they're in the dishwasher we have a pair of mugs from Vienna, memories of wonderful holidays we've had there and a couple we bought in the thieves market in Naples. Matchy matchy might be nice but I'd much rather have my memories.

Jaxhog · 25/08/2019 18:32

I thought the point of mugs is that they are random and interestingly different? Everything else should match, but not mugs.

Booyahkasha · 25/08/2019 18:33

Nobody have mini eggs mugs or Sports Direct here then?! No?

MaybeitsMaybelline · 25/08/2019 18:35

None of mine match. I like fine bone China in a variety of sizes and shapes depending on my food, coffee or tea and the time of day. DH and DD like fat chunky mugs and DS doesn’t care and reaches for the first mug in a cupboard.

MrsRufusdog789 · 25/08/2019 18:41

As much as I can understand your sense of aesthetics being offended by random gifts of mugs - it seems a pity that you can’t accept a present which might have been carefully chosen for you .I think of the person who bought me each mismatched mug I pull out of the cupboard . Some I’ve had for literally years . My fine bone china mugs picked up at charity shops have all bitten the dust. Another trip to buy more on the cards . They have probably been donated by someone like you so all good .

StripeySocks29 · 25/08/2019 18:42

Arrrgh my mum does this ALL. THE. TIME. And it drives me mad! If it’s not his and hers mugs it’s Easter egg mugs or worlds greatest mummy mugs and miniature versions for DD, I mean who gives an 18 month old a bloody china mug?!

I’m like you op, I’ve got all different sized mugs, cups and teacups with saucers but in the same pattern from the same range, that match the plates and bowls - because I’m not a uni student anymore.

I have a lovely porcelain mug with a blue rabbit on it. It is called The Favourite Child Mug and I bestow it on whichever child has ingratiated him or her self most effectively that day......

orangeshoebox · 25/08/2019 18:56

yabu
I love my collection of mugs.
mostly souvenirs.

bobsyourauntie · 25/08/2019 19:06

I am on the fence OP because I used to buy matching stuff, but now I just buy what I like. I do tend to buy in pairs though, or a set of 4, so same theme but different colours etc. I love Sainsburys mugs, they have one that is the perfect size with the perfect handle.

I am getting more random in my old age, so I will now buy pairs of bowls etc rather than a whole set of stuff.

Heatherjayne1972 · 25/08/2019 19:44

Can’t believe anyone gives this more than a seconds thought
A mug is for putting a drink in surely?
That’s all I require from my mugs

I’ve never ever considered the ‘issue’ of whether they match or not
They don’t

Never thought about it until this thread

Trudij123 · 25/08/2019 19:52

I have some matching but mostly not. I like to think that at least If I break one it’s not the end of the world to replace !!

( and I seem to have a million mugs even though I got rid of at least 20 when i moved!)

CeeceeBloomingdale · 25/08/2019 19:58

I can't stand matching things, I like things that go together or appeal to me but never matching. YABVU

Lulu49 · 25/08/2019 20:16

Yikes, I choose my mug very carefully, none of mine match and I like different sizes and textures for different things. I also have lots of cups and saucers for tea.

FelicisNox · 25/08/2019 20:29

YABU but I have both: matching mugs on a mug stand to match my crockery and odd mugs I've been given by the kids that have their own special mug cupboard.

I also have a very fetching collection of Harry Potter mugs, all different, all special to me. 😁

Croquembou · 25/08/2019 20:33

I don't drink hot drinks (I know, I know) and am genuinely baffled by mugs in general. My husband has been searching for the 'perfect' morning mug for months. They're too small, too big, not the right shape. It's like living with fucking Goldilocks.

PeriComoToes · 25/08/2019 20:39

YABU. No two mugs the same here. I have specific mugs for specific drinks. Why have all the same when there are so many wonderful ones to choose from???

Cloudyyy · 25/08/2019 20:46

Can I just clarify that nothing in my house (with some exceptions in the kids’ bedrooms) has come from Next or Ikea! I’m not sure why some people on this thread assume matching items must be either cheap, bought from those shops or both... bizarre! Stylish crockery can be bought from lots of places! Loving all the stories of odd mug collections, it’s clearly a lovely sentimental thing for lots of people. One more common gifting oddity! I was gifted three candles rexently by a friend and used them almost immediately. When she came round next, she asked where they were and seemed puzzled as to why I would use them at all.. she said that she uses them as decorations in her living room! Haaaa!!! So it’s not just mug trees and stunt pineapples, people are hoarding stunt candles too - hilarious!! 😂😂🤣🤣🤣

I've got about 20 mugs and only 2 match. When I first moved in my folks gave me some and my ex moved his in and I've been gifted some so now I just think what's the point of wasting money buying matching ones?

Maybe when my partner and I get our new house but right now, it's just not worth it.

leckford · 25/08/2019 20:50

Well mine always get broken so a lot don’t match!
