To not want mismatched mugs?

Just a lighthearted one really, but why would people buy random mugs as gifts? I can’t undertand wanting a mug bag doesn’t match anything else. All of my crockery must match. Are other people hoarding mismatched mugs and cups at home?? Are people doing this on purpose? Also cushions! Why would someone buy a random cushion for someone’s house that doesn’t match anything else? This happens all the time in my friendship group. Shouldn’t cushions match the sofa exactly? Can’t stand it!!! AIBU?

Are you a matchy-matchy person in all areas, OP? Do you have matching ‘pops of colour’ uniting the curtains and cushions in your sitting room? Are you horrified by teashops that serve on deliberately mismatched china?

Cloudyyy · 23/08/2019 23:23

Ah yes I can see why some would think it’s boring if they prefer chaos in the mug cupboard. 😂

I have a mug tree on the side with 4 matching mugs on, then a cupboard full of mismatched ones Grin

Sparklesocks · 23/08/2019 23:26

I like my mismatched mugs because they all have different stories/memories - some have been silly gifts, some leftovers from work, some freebies ive blagged at corporate stuff - it’s quite a weird mix! I don’t think I’ve bought myself a mug in years so weirdly it’s like a collection.

But you can have whatever mugs you want! Matching or not, whatever works for you.

Mammyloveswine · 23/08/2019 23:27

As a teacher... non of my mugs match 🤣🤣 well they do in that they say some variant of "best teacher" on them!

Cloudyyy · 23/08/2019 23:27

@NiceWork yes I suppose I am a matchy-matchy person in so far as I like order, good quality but simple design and definitely no “pops” of colour!

I like mismatched as different ones are for different things. The very big are for a mega coffee shot in the morning or I don't function, the smaller are for the perfect cup of tea which is tricky re milk ratio & then there are the posh few ones for visitors.

DramaAlpaca · 23/08/2019 23:28

There are few household things I dislike more than matching mugs. Mine are an eclectic mix of separates that please me.

I'm with OP on the cushions, though.

WombleishOfThigh · 23/08/2019 23:28

YABVU. Why should everything match? I like so many different styles of things and I don't see why I should limit myself to only one. I think everything matching shows unoriginality and lack of imagination. I'm old and I remember in the 80s/early 90s Eternal Beau being pretty much ubiquitous on wedding lists - some couples had to have everything Eternal Beau, crockery, cutlery, glasses, cruet sets, utensils etc. SO BORING! Grin

Different mugs for different moods and time of day and what I'm drinking. None of my mugs match

RushianDisney · 23/08/2019 23:32

I'd feel like I was living in a Sims house if everything matched exactly. It feels very clinical and unhomely to me.
But I'm the sort who gratefully accepts hand me downs of mugs, kitchenware, furniture, tea towels, tablecloths, bread makers - pretty much anything offered to me by my grandparents and older family members. I like that everything has a history before me, a story behind it. And they feel better about having a clear out if I am giving them a good home Grin

whattodowith · 23/08/2019 23:33

YABU. My Mother is like you, has to have matching everything. At Christmas she decorates her tree to match the living room decor Hmm.

I have an eclectic collection of mugs and Christmas decorations, nothing matches at all and I LOVE IT.

Cloudyyy · 23/08/2019 23:34

Hmm I’m not sure I can answer why it should match. I enjoy my mugs more when they’re beautiful and part of them being beautiful to me is them matching. I’m fine with other people having whatever mugs they like in their own homes - I can’t understnad buying random ones as gifts though?! I just can’t get my head around it as an idea.

OP posts:
NiceWork · 23/08/2019 23:35

I assume that the people who buy gift mugs for other people don’t realise how clenched the other people in question are about matching drinking vessels, or that a souvenir mug to them is the gateway drug to a horrifying ‘chaos in the mug cupboard’?

BinkyBaa · 23/08/2019 23:35

Yabu, most of our crockery matches but mugs are the exception. Any other souvenir ends up as hoarded junk, but souvenir mugs are useful!

badg3r · 23/08/2019 23:37

can’t understand buying them for someone else and therefore enforcing the mismatching mug/ cushion situation in someone else’s home

This is what has happened in our house! I long to have matching mugs sometimes but am too sentimental to ditch the ones that were presents (all of them) and also apparently too good at looking after them since they never bloody break. Oh, and we have too many on them too in general.

This is genuinely one of the things that bothers me most about the kitchen 🤣

Herefortheduration · 23/08/2019 23:37

I don't like matching crockery or glasses. I buy pieces that make me happy, so an eclectic collection.

My problem is that people buy me mugs but I don't drink hot drinks and don't remember that last time I used a mug.

Cloudyyy · 23/08/2019 23:40

@badg3r 😂🤣

I’m not ashamed to admit I have a mug tree with “show mugs” , they match the colour of the kettle, toaster and microwave, they are not to be used, they are just for aesthetic purposes, if people want a mug they use one from the cupboard which are not all matching.
My family think I’m crazy, I’m not crazy but if any of them ever use one of those mugs I shall unleash my wrath Grin

notso · 23/08/2019 23:42

WombleishOfThigh Shock you've taken me right back to my school friends house. Everything in their kitchen was Eternal Beau, they even paid for the walls to be painted in the same pattern and had their pine table and chairs stencilled.

I don't like matchy matchy. It's a bit soulless, as if you live in Dunelm Mill or Next Home.

Mrsmurrayposh · 23/08/2019 23:45

YABU. What I don't understand is why you don't just match the different mugs and cushions to your various homes? We use the more "handcrafted" for the cottage in Arles, the jaunty nauticals in our Brighton base, the finer china, silks and cotton for what we call our "real" home in London and so on. A place for everything, and everything in it's place.

Cloudyyy · 23/08/2019 23:47

@2toe So funny! 😂

At least with mugs you can throw the randomers in a cupboard I suppose! Mismatched cushions on the sofa would bother me every single time I looked at them!

OP posts:
notso · 23/08/2019 23:47

I am picky about my personal mugs. They must be china. I have a small one for tea and a big one for coffee.
I've got some inherited ones and various others which I like the design of but give to guests as they aren't china.

We've were given some big hefty Denby ones which I hate and someone bought me an Emma Bridgwater one for my birthday which is also too thick, I reserve them for tradesmen.

DippyAvocado · 23/08/2019 23:48

I dont think I have a single matching mug! DH and I have a motley collection that we have amassed between us over about 25 years. Most of them have been gifts at some point I think as I can't remember buying mugs ever. We're both teachers so we have a lot of "Best teacher mugs".

alittleprivacy · 23/08/2019 23:50

All my mugs have different superheroes on them. So do my cushions.
