To not want mismatched mugs?

Cloudyyy · 23/08/2019 22:58

Just a lighthearted one really, but why would people buy random mugs as gifts? I can’t undertand wanting a mug bag doesn’t match anything else. All of my crockery must match. Are other people hoarding mismatched mugs and cups at home?? Are people doing this on purpose? Also cushions! Why would someone buy a random cushion for someone’s house that doesn’t match anything else? This happens all the time in my friendship group. Shouldn’t cushions match the sofa exactly? Can’t stand it!!! AIBU?

I have 6 posh mugs which never get used in back of top cupboard. And 5 "easter egg"cups. The ones that u get free with easter eggs. Coffee tastes great out of them 😂☕ im too relaxed for matching. My cushions are red my 3 peice is cream. My curtains are brown. Happy days. Always a cake in the cupboard and sons friends love it. As we speak kittens are sprawled out on settee wines flowing and theres crumbs on the floor. Im happy my sons happy my kittens are happy. My house is clean. 🏡🍷🎂

I really can’t fathom why you’d want matching mugs but I guess each to their own 🤷‍♀️

Harls1969 · 25/08/2019 21:04

My mugs did match, then a couple got broken and I work in a school and have received mugs as gifts which I have to use, then there's the funny sweary one my daughter got me...so now they don't match and life still goes on. As long as I have a mug to drink my coffee from 😂

Jeeperscreepers69 · 25/08/2019 21:06

Yes me!!! And smarties and mars!!!!!

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 25/08/2019 21:08

Well none of my mugs match.
I have mismatched Cath Kidston, Emma Bridgewater, stroppy teenager, Radiohead, mini eggs Haha. You name it I have them

I have cups that aren't to be used like my chip ones from beauty and the best, they're in the cupboard which is glass fronted along with Mrs Potts.

But... the Christmas tree has to match the decor of the house.

Clockworkprincess · 25/08/2019 21:13

Lol. I have guest mugs in white but with different coloured inside, but i have a random collection for myself that i won't let anyone else use. Sofa cushions are random though, i have two on each sofa that match (but not matching the other sofa) and a load of Harry Potter cushions i was bought as presents over the years and i love cos they look so random next to our traditional living room. The original intention was to match but that fell by the wayside 😁

LouisaM100 · 25/08/2019 21:19

Imo YANBU, I hate mismatched mugs and when I married my husband he had a ton of them...it annoyed me lol so now I am slowly replacing them with all matching coloured Le Creuset mugsGrin

bananasandwicheseveryday · 25/08/2019 21:39

I love mismatched mugs. We have a huge collection, amassed over almost 40 years of marriage. I can think of only one set we've had that matched and they were bought as a souvenir from a family holiday around 20 years ago. There's only one left now. Personally, I find white quite soulless and lacking in personality, but that doesn't mean myugs are not good quality. When I buy new mugs, I buy from this range all bone china and lovely quality. I'm not a fan of chunky mugs like Denby or Emma Bridgewater. Though I do have a new, random one due this week - it has a picture of my gorgeous grandson on, so I'm sure that regardless of quality, it will quickly become my favourite!

Nousernameforme · 25/08/2019 22:02

I have the most perfect mug ever i saw it from outside the shop and liked the look of it went in picked it up and it felt right. It is substantial enough for tea tall enough for coffee and has a wide-ish mouth to fit marshmallows.
Dh prefers an awful thick bright yellow and black dalek mug that probably came with an Easter egg but he found in a charity shop for about 50p.
For our mugs to match one would have to give up their favourite and life is too short to have the wrong mug.

Teacher22 · 25/08/2019 22:08

I quite agree, OP, unmatched mugs are the pits. We have a set of Spode Blue Italian which match the dinner service. But the ones we use are Waitrose seaside themed mugs which are proper thin china but very large. When they are on offer at £4 instead of £6 I buy some more so we have about 12. But I am a bit OCD.

Teacher22 · 25/08/2019 22:09

One of the funniest running jokes on ‘The Royle Family’ was that they never, ever had matching mugs.

ToftyAC · 25/08/2019 22:25

Oh dear god.... there are no words.

Nonnymum · 25/08/2019 22:29

Mismatched crockery is much nicer than having everything matching. Same with mismatched soft furnishings. They look much nicer, mire homely and less like a hotel.

HennyPennyHorror · 25/08/2019 22:32

I like hand thrown mugs and vintage mugs. Since my hand thrown mugs can cost upwards of about 20 quid each, I can't ever buy a set but don't care.

My vintage mugs are the type of thing we'd have had in the 70s.

Raynedance · 25/08/2019 22:36

It's first time I've heard about non matching mugs being an issue and more than that..

Grim?

Grim to not have matching mugs Grin

HennyPennyHorror · 25/08/2019 23:13

As for people saying it's "common" Grin

Here's Emma Thompson at home in her kitchen....mismatched mugs!
www.thetimes.co.uk/article/the-refugees-story-2h3p2fc55

She's posh and rich.

HeronLanyon · 25/08/2019 23:19

I would definitely think there could be a correlation between matching mugs, branded clothing, range rovers. Could be. Maybe not but Have noticed it.
Non matching deffo not ‘common’ I think quite the opposite ?

LaurieMarlow · 25/08/2019 23:20

Matching mugs strike me as very lower middle class.

The toffs like passing that stuff down and no way would they be able to hold on to entire sets, so they’ll make a virtue of necessity.

HennyPennyHorror · 25/08/2019 23:21

Heron exactly. It's all a bit serviette isn't it?

KeepStill · 25/08/2019 23:23

Agreed on matching mugs as an LMC class marker.

TheSandman · 25/08/2019 23:30

My kids get upset if I use 'their' mugs for other people's drinks.

The Twin Peaks mugs is DD#1's, the Star Wars Ones are DS#1's, the big Sports Direct one's are my wife's etc. etc.

There would be ructions if I put the wrong mugs in front of the wrong people.

Mind you, I think I'd get a bit pissed off if someone used my Batman mug without asking.

Katzia · 26/08/2019 01:36

Don't mind the mugs. But random cushions. Why would anyone buy someone a random cushion?

ellabella84 · 26/08/2019 01:55

I have six matching ones for visitors but that’s only so they don’t use my mismatched Bridgewater mugs.

Mummadeeze · 26/08/2019 06:43

Never would have ever even thought about specifically buying matching mugs. But I don’t drink tea or coffee so maybe that’s why I don’t really care. My daughter has child themed ones and my partner has ones we have brought him back from holidays.

Juog · 26/08/2019 08:16

I have lots of mismatched mugs, pressies from the grandchildren with there pictures on,I also have lots of mismatched plates, some very old that belonged to my grandmother, I love them all there very pretty.
