So when people say how much they earn, how much they spend on a holiday, how handsome their DH is, do you realise that some people will not be truthful?
I ask because I see comments all the time about how well-off most MN are. I have been to meet ups, and most MN are pretty ordinary women. Lovely, funny and kind, but not super wealthy with amazing homes and husbands, just ordinary. Of course there will be some women on MN who are very well-off but they are not the norm here.

I don't believe anyone who says they are a Dr and also says don't go to A and E. Because over the internet you have no real idea. The answer should always be A and E or phone 111 if it sounds like nothing. So someone saying they feel dizzy might be a drama queen who has just stood up too quickly, or they might be really ill. You don't have access to their medical history so can't tell.

I sometimes look through the posting history of the executives in the city, the lawyers etc and it's amazing how often they're on Mumsnet during office hours most days

I fall in to this category. Work in the City and MN all the day. I spend a LOT of my time on incredibly boring conference calls and so MN during those, plus on my commute, and I work from home at least one day a week (like today).

I do believe that.

I knew a medical secretary who used to spend a lot of her working time on Ebay.
I felt she was defrauding the NHS.

Somebody else must have too because she was sacked.

In my job too it would have been a sackable offence to be loafing around on the internet when I was being paid for working.

Aroundtheworldandback · 23/08/2019 23:44

I can understand (not condone) why people would lie on here to prove a point. But to lie as a boast.. what satisfaction would it give to lie to a bunch of virtual strangers?

I can spot the trolling a mile off. As for lying about little things it didn't occur to me.

There is a shed load of lying on here. Like 40% true ish.

Why am I so gullible?

I should not be here.

Eustasiavye · 24/08/2019 08:38

I can't believe the high earners who choose to go camping in some shit hole rather than pay for a decent hotel.
Don't believe that they would choose to drive for hours on end then set up a tent, take hours to unpack and spend 2 weeks do I g that when they could check into a luxury hotel and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Eustasiavye · 24/08/2019 08:42

Oh and all this " I enjoy cooking, cleaning and being a general dogsbody whilst on holiday. "
No you do it cos it's cheap, stop lying.
I don't plenty of people who cook from scratch and keep their homes immaculate. They want a break from that whilst on holiday.

katewhinesalot · 24/08/2019 08:45

Why? Camping is fun whatever your income bracket. I wouldn't choose it as a main holiday but love a bit of camping.

ShirleyPhallus · 24/08/2019 08:45

That’s nice @LaMarschallin but we all have different employers and as long as we get our work done mine is very relaxed on working hours, lunch breaks, where we work from, personal internet use etc. It’s a great company because they treat us like adults

user1497863568 · 24/08/2019 08:58

I generally find the 'do you know some people lie' sort are either very naive or very judgemental.

cleverknot · 24/08/2019 09:00

I was accused of lying when I said that DS could buy mini-pizzas at school during break. Apparently no primary school would allow that. Confused. This is really boring stuff. Nothing to do with teenager underwear, holiday choices or the chicken that fed 5000.

In addition to lying... there is misrepresentation, willful or self-delusion. A MNer I got to know offline turned out to be a compulsive liar, about entirely stupid shit, IRL, who knows what she said on MN. Another gal often moaned on MN that people very wrongly assumed she badly wanted a girl after many boys; people who never went on MN but knew the moaner well IRL said she often said words about how nice it would to have a girl after so many boys, and spoke of other people's little daughters with apparent envy. Moaner eventually had a girl & I thought might be favouring her over the boys...

And then there's just different experiences... I reckon my industry is great to work in, low enough stress and low tedium, stimulating. Yet on MN it's often spoken of as extremely stressful almost abusive industry.

LaMarschallin · 24/08/2019 09:08

@ShirleyPhallus

I didn't think it was all that "nice". I'm jealous of people like you who can faff about on MN during conference calls (really? Mightn't that distract you and potentially cause mistakes? I don't think anyone doing my job would have been forgiven for finding something "boring" to the extent I'd mess about on the internet while they expected my complete attention).

I just think it's reasonable that if you're being paid for working, you work.

Presumably, if you're spending a lot of time mucking around on MN while you're being paid for doing something else, you could work fewer hours (for the same money) and then play on MN, or run your Ebay business in an honest way.

Would you want part of the taxes that you pay on your City job that go towardvs the NHS to fund a couple of hours each day paying someone buying and selling on Ebay?

ShirleyPhallus · 24/08/2019 09:42

@LaMarschallin the nature of my role means I’ll have to sit in on 2hr conference calls with not much of it applying to me, so I can easily keep an ear out while browsing MN / responding to emails / reviewing docus / reading the news then dip in and out when needed

I don’t know the woman in question re the NHS question so cant answer that but I, as a manager, don’t have an issue with people running personal errands during work time as long as they get their work done. Running an eBay business probably crosses the line but I don’t know enough about it to make a judgement

NoTheresa · 24/08/2019 09:45

Hmmm. I really do not think the word “professionalism” applies to someone who is cruising parenting forums when they are expected to be on task in a work environment.

Eustasiavye · 24/08/2019 09:57

Also what are these "outing" hobbies posters husbands have?

yellowbeard · 24/08/2019 10:18

@Jenala that would be my DH, he does the big shop, but then doesn't count all the top up shops and extras. So he doesn't keep the food bill down and he forgets most things then we buy them at a premium locally. Big fail.

Btw the way I do believe most people on MN are the extremes. I didn't have the time when I had a busy well paid career to MN. I'm a SAHM now so poorer.

Rethymnon · 24/08/2019 10:27

The “outing” hobbies could be lots of things - eg motor racing; particular charity events eg. in the Sahara or Arctic that not that many people do; climbing particular mountains; cycling thoough a certain part of the world; sailing in a particular event, etc. Ok, most people wouldn’t know, but if they’re was someone who you vaguely knew who was aware of the things your DH does, then they might put two and two together, alongside other info you might have given.

FartnissEverbeans · 24/08/2019 10:50

People really lie when it comes to their kids as well.

OP: “My daughter just turned two, she has a vocabulary of hundreds of words, uses full sentences and can count to fifty. Is she behind?”

MN: “I would say she’s average. My daughter was reading Harry Potter by that age. She’s generally considered to be very gifted though”

Threads and threads of this shit!

PortiaCastis · 24/08/2019 11:09

I think embellishment is one of the hobbies!

RottnestFerry · 24/08/2019 11:31

I can't believe the high earners who choose to go camping in some shit hole rather than pay for a decent hotel.

Ha ha! We aren't badly off. Have about seven weeks of long and short haul holidays booked in the next four months (yes, really) and are planning a camping trip around Scotland next year. Admittedly, we intend to avoid the shit-hole parts (every country has them) as far as possible.

Okey doke.

I suppose I'm just envious of a job that's so easy that 2hr's of my working day wouldn't need much of my concentration, so that I could have played on MN and read the news and so forth.
It would have been a lot more fun.

xsquared · 24/08/2019 11:42

I am always suspicious of threads, started by newbies usually, that get picked up by The Sun/ Daily Mail on the same day after a handful of responses.

There was a thread not long ago where the op found a tube of lube in her dd's suitcase complete with photo, which appeared on The Sun.

wheresmymojo · 24/08/2019 11:49

I actually don't lie - I earn a fair amount - six figures.

But if you meet at an MN meet up I still look like a normal woman not fabulously wealthy because...

  • I'm shit with money and a lot goes on debts, car finance, Starbucks coffee (I kid you not, if I gave it up I could have another holiday a year) and being lazy (buying lunch at work, convenience food, etc)
  • I live in the South East so a lot goes on a mortgage for a nice 4 bed but it's by no means 'grand' or says 'high earner'
  • I'm from a working class family from Stoke so as down to earth as they come
  • I try to buy most stuff second hand or cheaply (because environment)

I mean I'm just about to head to Wickes in a dress I've had for three years that I bought second hand on Ebay to buy paint and dust sheets as I'm going to paint the kitchen myself. Just because I earn six figures doesn't make me a certain type of person to meet me 🤷🏻‍♀️
