I absolutely love the name Reuben but my friends little boy has this name :( Is there anything similar anyone can think of? I quite like Arlo but i'm hearing it a lot now too. I find out what I'm having in a few weeks and if its a boy i'm totally stumped! I already have a little girl, i have so many girls names to use but not one for a boy!

TBF, I can understand not wanting to call a child Dicken. The playground is a cruel place.

quizqueen · 22/08/2019 02:32

Rudi, Ezra or try one of the names of Joseph's other brothers, if you liked Reuben!

A good rule of thumb is to imagine your kid in a court of law. Does their name make them sound like the judge or the defendant? There’s a lot of defendants names on this thread.

Beuben
Deuban
Neuban

My third son would have been Rueben if I had had one! 80s though so not so common then. I like Hamish, Hamilton and Matthias , pronounced Ma Tay us. It’s not easy choosing a name your son will probably use forever and I would find it hard now as so many make me think of people with that name already!

My boys names are Flynn, Mattias , Ellis, Ellias, Caius, Cassius, Borromir and Atticus.

Apart from liking a S ending and the us sound, I also go for names with a double letter.

flirtygirl · 22/08/2019 13:20

Also Gaius.

NoSauce · 22/08/2019 13:23

There’s a baby name section, what’s your AIBU?

My favourite name is Addison for boy or girl

Achilles

Claudius

Jolyon

Timon

Leander

The only way you'll get truly unique is to get out your Scrabble set and pick letters at random until you get a combination that looks like a name. And then reject any that come up with someone called that when you google.

LakieLady · 22/08/2019 14:29

Afterthought: Actaeon

LakieLady · 22/08/2019 14:31

My favourite name is Addison for boy or girl

That just makes me think of Addison's (Adison's?) disease.

That could be a whole new naming theme, couldn't it? Meniere, Adison, Hodgkin, Osgood-Schlatters ...

80sMum · 22/08/2019 14:38

If you want your child to have an uncommon name, choose one that is currently unfashionable. For a boy I would suggest one of these:
Cyril
Cecil
Nigel
Melvyn
Kelvin
Reginald
Roger
Derek
Brian
Neville
Julian
Adrian
Horace
Lionel
Anthony
Malcolm
Kenneth
Terence

Oh! I forgot Ned?
I like that too.

Userzzzzz · 22/08/2019 15:27

GibbonLover I was at school with a Dicken- the poor boy suffered a lot.

BertrandRussell · 22/08/2019 15:27

Patrick

Edward because of all the shortenings.

GibbonLover · 22/08/2019 15:41

Userzzz I imagine a boy called Gaius would suffer too!

I like your names Bertrand, classic, solid names.

theWarOnPeace · 22/08/2019 15:49

All this ‘nobody owns a name’ business, I can’t get on board with at all! Technically nobody does, but it’s weird when someone you’re close to uses the same fairly unusual or even quite common name.

OP how about Raphael? I’ve always liked it, gives me Reuben vibes.

chambord · 22/08/2019 16:25

How about Orsen?
