Is is fear or something? Just feel that so much is fuelled by xenophobia...Brexit, stabbings, right wing extremism is on the rise.in a more interconnected world i would hope for the opposite

Genuine racism, that is the discrimination of somebody based solely on there race or skin colour, thankfully is something of a rarity nowadays due to a more educated population.....apparently.

Hmm
Idaho999 · 21/08/2019 05:22

regardless of muslims being of a religion, if you proclaim to hate all muslims or believe in the killing of jews I think you'll find that you are indeed a racist. It doesn't have to be based on skin colour.

Xenophobia is xenophobia.... i.e the result rather than the cause. Are these people xenophobic or just racist.

I would argue that in a more interconnected world that would be the expected result surely? More people coming into contact with people with opposing views and beliefs, what, you expect less conflict and more tolerance?? confused.

isabellerossignol · 21/08/2019 05:48

Because people are illogical. I have a neighbour who regularly posts stuff on Facebook reminding people of the horrors of the Holocaust, how we need to see warnings from history, how bravely the UK fought the horror of Nazism.

But the same neighbour also has a mad online love affair going with Nigel Garage, and regularly posts about how Romanian immigrants are like rats, they're all thieves, that he can't wait for Brexit so that we can send the rats back to their shit infested home country etc.

The lack of joining the dots is both baffling and terrifying.

ThePolishWombat · 21/08/2019 06:37

isabellerossignol I know a few people like this, and I had to have a Facebook cull because that level of thick just really hurt my brain Confused

LiveInAHidingPlace · 21/08/2019 06:48

"The lack of joining the dots is both baffling and terrifying."

God yes those kinds of people are infuriating.

Cassilis · 21/08/2019 08:37

@Idaho999 genuine racism is something of a rarity? What utter bullshit.

I’m guessing you’re white?

Bravelurker · 21/08/2019 12:16

@Cassilis, no not making excuses for racists, they can own their batshit views. No I was in my own muddled way just pointing out the hypocrisy that I too have experienced as a mix raced person, that I know plenty of racist people that will be positively lovely to me and will not see me in the same light as the 'others'.
And before you come for me with your suggestion that I should not in any way tolerate these people with these views, I would like you to know that it has been a life long balancing act of choosing my battles.

Nothingcomesforfree · 21/08/2019 12:37

I think lumping all the groups people are prejudiced against, and calling “racist” is unhelpful.
For example Christians claim they are the most persecuted group in the world. htp.org/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4tKwg-2T5AIVCLLtCh2IVA8-EAAYASAAEgL6f_D_BwE.
These are also non white ethnic groups.
So there is both an issue with people discriminating against them for their race but also others from the same ethnic group for their choice of religion.

I would also point out that many posters are falling into the same rhetoric as the people they are deriding. Lots of insults and name calling. Assumptions that people can only be one thing ie if you are racist ,you are thick.
Surely the ideal everyone should take everyone as they come. Treat people as you would like to be treated. Whatever your beliefs they don’t trump anyone else’s be it politics, religion or anything else. So long as you are behaving in a way that respects others.

TrainspottingWelsh · 21/08/2019 15:26

ponoka I’m not so sure. I can think of many people that would quite rightly take huge offence if they were accused of othering, never mind being openly racist towards a Sikh of Indian descent, but have very different attitudes towards a Muslim of Pakistani descent. Even if both are descendants of people that came to the uk soon after the partition. In which case it’s true to say the racism isn’t about skin colour, or race but religion.

brave exactly, and if every time anyone tries to object they are shut down as racist, it’s not surprising that some might turn to the far right groups that appear to be the only ones concerned with their side.

Outside hatred for its own sake, I’m not sure stupidity is the only or main reason. It’s experience and opportunity too. Ditto for passing it on to children. No excuses for passing on hatred, but othering depends on more than just parental attitude.

chickenyhead · 22/08/2019 00:28

Racism is as prevalent now as it has always been. And not just amongst the white population.

What has changed massively is peoples awareness of it. There is a lot of fuss around paying lip service to not being racist whilst in reality maintaining the same beliefs I.e. all white girls are sluts (perhaps a poor example but i myself am white and dont want to slur a different race and invalidate my point).

What this means for me personally is that the racism nowadays cannot be so easily excused as ignorance. Where have these people been living?

I think education has a role in reducing racism. Other cultures should be appreciated, not tolerated.

Idaho999 · 22/08/2019 00:47

Cassilis

I dont think skin colour has anything to do with it. White people have their own experiences too you know. Racism on the whole has decreased massively over the years. Even as recently as the 90's some forms of racism were still considered normal such as the 'golly wog' tokens printed on the jam jars. I think most people look back and cringe at how institutionally racist we were.

Obviously our own personal experiences will affect how we view racism and I personally see it as something as a rarity.

Are you someone who has been affected personally? I'd be interested to hear about those experienceing it as a common occurence and in what way?

I can understand why people wouldn't like you, although Ive based that on your attitude rather than any assumption of your race.

Jimjamjooney · 22/08/2019 01:03

Idaho999 out of interest, what skin colour do you have? Generally I've found that it's white people bringing up 'their own experiences and denying that racism is still alive and well.

Today or yesterday there's been coverage about racism in football. Pogba was receiving racist abuse for missing a penalty. A few days ago there were talks about doing more to stamp out racism in football as more black players were abused after the matches this weekend. That's just one example off the top of my head.

I'm lucky I work in a diverse workplace with educated people but I won't ignore other people's experiences (e.g. questionable comments towards my black friend working in a law firm).

LiveInAHidingPlace · 22/08/2019 02:52

Discussing race on mn is always so pointless. Full of white people talking about how there's no racism anymore but if there is, white people have it just as bad.

DeeCeeCherry · 22/08/2019 03:03

Because ruling via the order of chaos works. Impose hardships on population, present them with scapegoats to divert them, and that's it. It works. I'm quite sure if all immigrants left this country en masse they'd turn on ginger haired people or some such. Narrow minded uncultured people always need someone to blame for their ills.

Idaho999 · 22/08/2019 04:02

it was actually the racism that exists in football that was the only example i could think of and hense apart from football racism I dont hear of any other examples occuring.

Even football racism I think is more likely a case of goading than actual hatred of a player because of their race. The fans know how shouting something like 'You black bastard your useless' will be highly likely to provoke a rise. Its wrong to behave in such a way, but i think you'll find its more likely to the dislike of the team the player is playing for or how they are performing than a genuine issue with a persons race.

GibbonLover · 22/08/2019 04:42

Things you don't hear at the footy:
'Firmino, you fucking spick'
'Kloppo, you fucking Nazi'
'Robbo, you fucking jock'
'Hendo, you English twat'

Things you do hear:
'Mane, you black bastard'
'Salah, you Muslim cunt'

It's definitely to do with race/religion.

longwayoff · 22/08/2019 06:48

Fear and ignorance exacerbated by the print media constantly exploiting this by racking up tension and encouraging hatred. Social harmony doesn't sell. Sadly.

BlueSkiesLies · 22/08/2019 07:00

I don’t think that many people are racist in the sense of thinking eg black people are stupid, not really as human as white people and all the other abhorrent things racist neo-Nazis would say.

However a hell of a lot more people are racist in the sense that they don’t especially like ‘black culture’ and would say it glamorises violence and get rich quick (illegality) rather than a good hard working ethic. People who don’t really acknowledge institutional racism in the U.K. People who think black boys stabbing black boys in London is a black community problem.

Everyone will tell you they aren’t a racist, but there is virtually zero intermixing between different even in London.

Oh sure, your best friend is black - Ken the Doctor, who you met at Med school, the 3rd generation immigrant who was the only black guy at school and had to shrug off any nod to his heritage to try and avoid getting bullied. Sure, that means you’re totally down with not being a racist. Ken is more ‘white’ than you are!

Same applies to any other groups in the U.K.

LiveInAHidingPlace · 22/08/2019 07:08

gibbon totally disagree. Go to any Scottish football match and you'll hear plenty of English players getting heckled for their nationality.

Likewise, as a Scot, I've heard every insult you could care to think of.

It is nowhere near as bad as the racism levelled at black/Muslim people but it happens. Sometimes it happens and it really is just banter, sometimes it is something more.

As for east Asians, don't even get me started, my husband is from there and the constant small dick/squinty eyes/ching chong comments are fucking unreal.

chickenyhead · 22/08/2019 10:08

See there it is, racism in its essence...

White = racist

Totally totally racist and unfair.

LiveInAHidingPlace · 22/08/2019 10:38

Yes chicken, poor whitey and the terrible prejudice we face on a daily basis, it is a real struggle, how do we manage.

LochJessMonster · 22/08/2019 10:44

Football racism is pointless. The racist tweets towards Pogba when he missed that penalty - pretty much all football fans would be delighted to meet Pogba, they would definitely get a photo/autograph. Same with Stirling. Excellent footballers, and fans know this. They don't hate them because they are black. They are angry because they missed that specific penalty/goal etc.

But for some reason they have to call them a 'black bastard' rather than just a 'bastard'.

LochJessMonster · 22/08/2019 10:45

^ just realised that's pretty much what @Idaho999 said. 100%

EmeraldShamrock · 22/08/2019 10:54

I hope human race would change and evolve. My GF was racist, My DF was racist as a young man, he changed from my DM, we were never racist as DC.
My DC neices & nephews have lots of friendships from different nationalities all welcome in our home, DD age 11 although HFA is an advocate for people are people, love is love.
I thought Ireland was a different place now.
On the news yesterday a young Muslim girl was dragged to the ground her hijab removed by teenagers from the travelling community. It was extremely disturbing.
If I hear or see anyone being racist I'd slap their mouth including a gang of teens.
We need a massive stamp out racism campaign.
