Monarchy Abolished?

malibuloving · 19/08/2019 17:52

Other threads have inspired me Grin

Do you think we’ll ever live to see the Royals gone or perhaps our children will?

I can see public support for it to be abolished once the Queens gone. I feel like they’ve had too many chances at this point. The cover up of Andrews vile friendship with the sexual predator Epstein and the awful things Andrew probably did plus the pictures with teenagers has been an outrage. I also really like Harry and Meghan but their hypocrisy is quite embarrassing how they’re banging on about climate change and then jetting off across the globe on private jets. And more and more for all royals.

AIBU to think their time is up soon

No, I didn’t say private property at all you’ve made that up. Desperate.

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 20/08/2019 21:07

I had a family member turn this invite down

I did too. No way did I want to spend a day bored out of my skull and hoping for a glimpse of overindulged, overprivileged, workshy non entities.

Also turned down an "honour" for the same reason.

And a little square chocolate thing that my father, who I was being a +1 to insisted on referring to as a Lamington in an accent more Australian than he had used since he was 18. Ah, the memories.

Just think some of you slagging the monarchy off would have got some of that back in benefits and spent it on sour grapes

Having concern over how your taxes are spent is not sour grapes! Geez - are you Andrew or Edward?
In a democracy our taxes should not be spent supporting a family who have done nothing to earn their position of privilege - but worse, in that position of privilege, abuse it!

BertrandRussell · 20/08/2019 21:11

The tea was much better in the 1970s than it was in the 1990s. Must have been all that frugality kicking in.

the menopausal buffoons of mumsnet

Talking about yourself doesn't advance the debate.

LaurieMarlow · 20/08/2019 21:13

I can’t believe I could be arsed, but here’s a direct quote from you from upthread. Again, I’ve bolded the relevant bit. Wink

And the Royals are massive net contributors to the public purse, they don’t cost a penny as they contribute all the rental income of the crown lands that they privately own to HMRC in exchange for a tiny fraction back as an allowance.

Alsohuman · 20/08/2019 21:15

The iced coffee was dreadful - too sweet. And the tea was cold. The chocolate cake was amazing. You weren’t quick enough off the mark @BertrandRussell, I was too full to even think about dinner.

BertrandRussell · 20/08/2019 21:18

Was it little cubes of chocolate cake, @alsohuman? They were the highlight of the 1990s one......

LaurieMarlow · 20/08/2019 21:19

I’d expect the palace to serve good tea. How disappointing!

TeaLibrary · 20/08/2019 21:20

Shortstuff99. I hardly think you can throw stones about intellectual debate nor have any right to refer to other people as "menopausal buffoons".

Shortstuff99 · 20/08/2019 21:22

That’s very rude!

BertrandRussell · 20/08/2019 21:22

And “typos” Grin

Solihooley · 20/08/2019 21:26

My mum went to one of the garden parties once and they served sandwiches and a bit of dried up old Battenburg.

Alsohuman · 20/08/2019 21:27

Yes, the little cubes of chocolate cake - delicious. The Dundee cake was pretty damn good too.

TeaLibrary · 20/08/2019 21:28

No I'm not being at all rude Shortstuff. I'm not the one referring to other people as "menopausal buffoons".

Shortstuff99 · 20/08/2019 21:36

TeaLibrary

No I'm not being at all rude

I’ll be the judge of that thank you very much

Is that you trying to get off on a technicality?

Rainbunny · 20/08/2019 21:51

I certainly hope the institution of the royal family is done away with within a generation. They can be retired with all their wealth, keep a few castles and the government can take over the rest for tourism purposes.

It's the one thing I like about Meghan Markle - I actually think she'll prove to be a nail in the coffin of the Royals. In the 21st century there's literally no good reason to pay for a particular family to be elevated above the rest of society for no other reason than their birth, it's ridiculous! The whole mystique around the royals is this idea that they are somehow rarer and superior to the rest of us but having a regular person, a divorced american actress no less, marrying in makes a mockery of that and reveals them all to be no better than a posh version of the Kardashians.

I think most of us have genuine fondness for the Queen but when she's gone and we're left with King Charles, well let's just say I think he may the last King of England with any ceremonial power.

Shortstuff99 · 20/08/2019 22:00

a divorced american actress

Righto so divorcees from America are now inferior. That’s pretty uncalled for tbh!
