To think it’s nothing wrong shopping at Asda?

I work for a well known car racing company. Our offices are based near a large Asda store. There aren’t many places in the area to buy lunch from. The majority of my colleagues will not shop at Asda...as it’s degrading (they say). They would rather drive 15-20 min to a M&S to buy lunch.
I find this ridiculous and I find myself in minority most of the time. I’d rather use my lunch break eating lunch than driving around. Do people find shopping at Asda degrading?

How fucking pathetic are your colleagues. Seriously. How can you take them seriously when they say such shite?!

HappyHammy · 19/08/2019 17:21

No. They have some great food, their fruit and lunch salads are excellent.

dentydown · 19/08/2019 17:21

No. I would love to shop at Asda, but it is a drive away and I don’t have a car! Let them lose 20 mins or so getting a sandwich from m and s. Not your problem!

MrsT1405 · 19/08/2019 17:21

Certainly not! It's good value decent food. Tell them to get a grip!

StrongTea · 19/08/2019 17:22

I pop into my local one fairly often, not my favourite supermarket though. It’s nearest to my bank. Wouldn’t bother me if anyone saw me there or knew I shopped there. We are lucky though, all supermarkets are about the same distance away.

Anotherusefulname · 19/08/2019 17:22

I wouldn't say degrading, but it wouldn't be my choice of shop if other options were available.
A lunch from M and S is going to be tastier than from Asda. Also it is nice to get away from work at lunchtime.

Itsacrazyworld · 19/08/2019 17:23

I know right?! They seem a bit stuck up tbh...I’m new to the role. Never really experienced this issue before 🤷🏻‍♀️

Food is food, i wouldn't be surprised if a lot of their pre packed sandwiches etc come from the same factory anyway, just with the different shops branded packaging.

Thry want to waste fuel and money to act like a snob, more fool them.

AmmarettoSours · 19/08/2019 17:24

Your colleagues are snobby fuckers. how you dont burst out laughing daily is a mystery.

Bloodycats · 19/08/2019 17:24

Total opposite where I’m from. You get funny looks if you shop anywhere more upmarket than ASDA.

Expressedways · 19/08/2019 17:24

Preferring the food from M&S- fine.
Calling shopping at Asda degrading- not fine.

Personally I’d rather bring my lunch in from home than buy it from Asda everyday but there’s nothing degrading about it. What an odd and snobby thing for your colleagues to say.

Bloodycats · 19/08/2019 17:25

Ps yanbu absolutely nothing wrong with shopping at ASDA. Their food is delicious

CassianAndor · 19/08/2019 17:26

I've shopped in Asda on occasions and whilst certain things are good I think their quality on a lot of my usual items is pretty shoddy, or they simply don't stock them at all.

But what really grates me about Asda is how hyper-genderised their kids clothing is, and that is good enough reason for me not to give them my custom.

Is the M&S really a 20 minute drive away? If so, I;d do the drive once a week and stock up on M&S lunches.

Gilead · 19/08/2019 17:26

I won't shop at Asda on principle at the moment. Your colleagues however, are idiots.

BeanBag7 · 19/08/2019 17:27

"Degrading " what a load of crap

WingBingo · 19/08/2019 17:27

Well I have no issue buying lunch but my MIl worked there until recently and the stories are shocking

dollydaydream114 · 19/08/2019 17:28

I prefer an M&S lunch myself because I just think there's more choice of sandwiches etc but to call shopping at Asda 'degrading' is absolutely fucking horrible. What a bunch of snobby arseholes.

Littlechocola · 19/08/2019 17:31

I mostly shop in Lidl and take sandwiches from home. They would love me!

Arnoldthecat · 19/08/2019 17:35

I always bring packed lunch. Im avoiding Asda as they are currently locked in a staff dispute and threatening to sack their works if they dont sign new inferior contracts.

pictish · 19/08/2019 17:38

Not degrading no, but low quality of produce yes. I think Lidl has better quality food than ASDA by far. I shop in Lidl quite happily. There isn’t a supermarket going that I’d feel degraded by using.

Itsacrazyworld · 19/08/2019 17:40

@CassianAndor yes roughly 15-20 min depending on the traffic

I tend to bring my own lunch or run quickly to Asda. There have been awkward moments when I came in with my lunch in an Asda shopping bag 🤷🏻‍♀️Oh well

Tinyandpetite · 19/08/2019 17:40

Bit off topic, sorry if I sound like a cheapskate. Does anybody else find asda not that cheap? Probably just me....

Coffeeandchocolate9 · 19/08/2019 17:41

How fragile their egos must be if they'd find shopping in one of the main supermarkets degrading.

I don't have a local Asda but I'm pleasantly surprised to see people on here boycotting it because of their staff policy right now. Good on you!

Itsacrazyworld · 19/08/2019 17:42

@Tinyandpetite not that cheap I agree but M&S is more expensive

LondonJax · 19/08/2019 17:43

They do realise that the chances are the sandwich they buy at M&S has been made by the same factory as the one you bought at ASDA don't they? Probably Greencore as they are the main UK sandwich suppliers and make for Boots, Sainsbury's, Tesco, M&S, Co-op and Asda I believe

My friend works in a factory that makes ready meals. They do one recipe for ASDA and another for a different supermarket - but they come from the same factory floor.

My mum used to work in a factory that made pickles etc., The Tesco buyer would insist on a certain size of onion (say) in their pickles whilst Haywards would want something different. But the factory was the same factory and the pickles were handled by the same workers!

M&S have contracts, not factories. As a car racing team they should know that - it's like buying Michelin tyres - the team don't actually make their own tyres, they buy them. Perhaps to a special specification but they still buy from the same manufacturer that makes my tyres. Bloody idiots.
