To think it’s nothing wrong shopping at Asda?

I work for a well known car racing company. Our offices are based near a large Asda store. There aren’t many places in the area to buy lunch from. The majority of my colleagues will not shop at Asda...as it’s degrading (they say). They would rather drive 15-20 min to a M&S to buy lunch.
I find this ridiculous and I find myself in minority most of the time. I’d rather use my lunch break eating lunch than driving around. Do people find shopping at Asda degrading?

Thanks DratTheCat for the inside info on the new contract. So do you think the GMB trade union campaign is fully justified or are they ramping it up out of all proportion? i dont think people should just be fired like that. It smacks of corporate bullying.

Why is it degrading? They sound like stuck up nobheads!

Jsmith99 · 20/08/2019 20:02

M&S’s sandwiches and salads are in a completely different league to any other supermarket, so If I had the option, I would always prefer to buy my lunch there, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with shopping at Asda and I would happily do so if it was significantly closer and more convenient. Your colleagues are idiots.

M&S’s food is generally really nice. I don’t shop at Asda because we don’t have one anywhere for miles around but I don’t think it’s degrading to go there. Personally I think I would take lunch to work with me and maximum the break by sitting in the sunshine rather than the car.

I can't see how shopping at Asda is degrading - I get my weekly shop there however faced with a choice of an Asda meal deal and an M&S one I'd pick the M&S one every time even if it meant a little bit of a drive

I’m guessing Woking, OP. Am I right?

I don’t live near an Asda but popped into one whilst out and about. Bought a chicken and veg pie for tea. The pie was shared between the four of us. Between us there were only two pieces of chicken! We laughed about it but felt a tad cheated. Pastry wasn’t up to scratch either. It may have been a one-off. If a branch was near to me , however, I would go out of my way to avoid for the same reason as pps... disgraceful treatment of staff, particularly of those who need flexibility in their working hours in order to care for family members.

MrsGrindah · 20/08/2019 20:29

Idiots for saying it’s degrading. However, there’s nothing wrong in anyone saying they don’t want to shop at a particular store. It’s not compulsory and we all have different budgets, tastes and priorities.

aintnothinbutagstring · 20/08/2019 20:36

I don't think M+S treat their staff any better than Asda, ours has got rid of loads of check out staff so that a whole section of their checkouts is now non functional and a huge waste of space. Sainsbury's is the same, they're moving towards checkout free stores. I usually shop at Ocado but will probably stop when they swap Waitrose products for the hyper inflated prices of M+S.

Haha I know a few people like this.

I love unpackaging things like cakes and sandwiches and getting compliments on how nice they look or taste and then telling them its asda. Grin
