To think it’s nothing wrong shopping at Asda?

I work for a well known car racing company. Our offices are based near a large Asda store. There aren’t many places in the area to buy lunch from. The majority of my colleagues will not shop at Asda...as it’s degrading (they say). They would rather drive 15-20 min to a M&S to buy lunch.
I find this ridiculous and I find myself in minority most of the time. I’d rather use my lunch break eating lunch than driving around. Do people find shopping at Asda degrading?

I wasn’t aware of the staff issues ... what is that about?

I hate shopping at Asda and I definitely wouldn’t eat their sandwiches. The ones round my way are grim.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 19/08/2019 17:47

My local ASDA is grim. Really hideous. I would find shopping there deeply unpleasant. And possibly 'degrading'. I'd go further rather than shop there.

The one in the next town is really nice though. Would happily shop there.

BuildBuildings · 19/08/2019 17:49

I prefer M&S but the nearest supermarket to work is asda so I end up popping in once a week or so. To say it's degrading is a bit mad! If just make sure I brought lunch in if it was 20 min drive

vodkaredbullgirl · 19/08/2019 17:49

Fucking twats, nothing wrong with shopping in asda, unless its the pits (excuse the pun)

Itsacrazyworld · 19/08/2019 17:49

This local Asda is a lovely store, clean and with lots of options. Staff is lovely as well. I don’t have anything against it.

A town near me has a factory that make the m&s sandwiches, the factory gets called "the shunk" says it all really

Lovemenorca · 19/08/2019 17:51

Nothing wrong

But not much right with it either!

Sotiredofthislife · 19/08/2019 17:53

A lunch from M and S is going to be tastier than from Asda

Why?! What a weird generalisation.

ToftheB · 19/08/2019 17:53

Your colleagues are idiots.

However, I'm boycotting Asda because of the way they're treating their employees. My mum works there and she's being forced to sign a new contract, with worse pay and conditions, or facing the sack. I don't know how it can possibly be legal, but somehow it is Angry

GetOffTheTableMabel · 19/08/2019 17:53

Your colleagues need to look up the actual meaning of word demeaning. Tools.

I would happily do my big shop in Asda but would probably be prepared to drive further to get to an M&S to buy lunch because they have a much bigger range of salads, sushi and healthy pre-prepared options.

Camomila · 19/08/2019 17:54

I prefer M&S sandwiches too and would probably go there if it wasn't too out of the way but I do my weekly food shop at Asda.

Its our nearest market with clothes so I often see the same Asda tops/jumpers etc on DS and his nursery friends.

stucknoue · 19/08/2019 17:54

I shop at asda, I also go elsewhere, only snobs refuse to go to certain supermarkets when it more convenient.

OtraCosaMariposa · 19/08/2019 17:55

Pathetic.

Sounds like my niece who won't be seen dead dropping off things at a charity shop, has never been in a Lidl/Aldi, and refers to people who but in the sales as "povs".

Total inferiority complex. Tell your colleagues from me that there is an Asda in our very well to do suburb, just along the road from a Waitrose.

Pretendapony · 19/08/2019 17:58

Some of the richest people I know shop at Aldi. I think people are only snobby if they’re lower middle class.

Summersunshine2 · 19/08/2019 17:58

I shop at Asda and Tesco. I prefer the Tesco chicken but prefer the Asda cauliflower!
They are absolute snobs. It isn't degrading to shop anywhere and not polite to mention these silly opinions to people.

Nameusernameuser · 19/08/2019 17:58

Our local Asda has been refurbed. Looks okay inside but I find the layout weird and the fruit and veg is absolutely rubbish. It's closest to me so will pop in for loo roll etc, their frozen stuff is good, we don't really eat any freezer food but it's very cheap in there. I'm a Tesco girl at heart, though.

My dad calls it Chavsda!

Pretendapony · 19/08/2019 17:58

I think they have something to prove.

Nameusernameuser · 19/08/2019 17:59

Oh and your colleagues are twats!

reginafelangee · 19/08/2019 17:59

What total eejits- of course there's nothing wrong with Asda.

Morons.

BeanBag7 · 19/08/2019 18:05

Do they all drive there, separately, every day? Surely that takes 40 minutes out of their lunch hour each day! What a colossal waste of time and petrol. They should definitely set up a rota where Dave buys everyone's sandwiches on Monday and Sally buys them on Tuesday etc. Or at least buy 5 sandwiches on Monday and keep them in a fridge at work or take them home and bring one each day. Does nobody drive past this M&S on their way to work?
I have so many questions for such a simple topic 😄

Jinglejanglefish · 19/08/2019 18:11

I find Asda really cheap, I spend the same there as I did when I was shopping at aldi and much prefer the stuff I get and the general 'shopping experience'.

It's maybe not the fanciest supermarket, always seems to be such a small section for fresh food then aisles and aisles of crap. But I can deal with that for the price.

'degrading' is a very bizarre term to use!

SistersOfMerci · 19/08/2019 18:11

I'm not sure your colleagues actually know what the definition of degrading is tbh.

I generally hate food shop snobbery for your basic everyday stuff. If I haven't made lunch at work/out then I head for the nearest shop that sells sandwiches, be it Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Asda, whatever.

I did however go into a Tesco local this year or whatever they're called and I felt really uneasy, it was like some crack den.

Disclaimer, I've never actually been in a crack den.

WingBingo · 19/08/2019 18:18

They way they treat their staff is shocking

Staff are having their hours cut, home shopping can’t be delivered and to top it all off, blatant nepotism in some cases.

I know of a store manager that cuts hours so their 2 kids home from uni get hours over the summer.

When it’s a struggling family having a lower income due to the store manager’s kids needing hours, it should not be acceptable.

Aprillygirl · 19/08/2019 18:18

Idiotic brainwashed sheep.I hate food snobs. And people who drive when they don't need to with no regard for the environment. Twats!
