To think it’s nothing wrong shopping at Asda?

I work for a well known car racing company. Our offices are based near a large Asda store. There aren’t many places in the area to buy lunch from. The majority of my colleagues will not shop at Asda...as it’s degrading (they say). They would rather drive 15-20 min to a M&S to buy lunch.
I find this ridiculous and I find myself in minority most of the time. I’d rather use my lunch break eating lunch than driving around. Do people find shopping at Asda degrading?

Seems like your colleagues are uncomfortable with their status, and think shopping at m&s makes them a little more worthy. I shop across the board, quite regularly shop at m&s, Lidl and Asda. They’re my most used supermarkets. They sounds like the type of arseholes to spend 40% of their income on a car just to keep up appearances :-)

Derbee · 19/08/2019 19:05

They sounds like dicks. ASDA vegan sandwiches around Christmas time are worth making a special trip for IMO.

Serin · 19/08/2019 19:06

I got Salmonella from an M and S chicken and stuffing sandwich. They admitted liability and paid out.
I have never been ill from any other supermarket.

EmmiJay · 19/08/2019 19:06

M&S food tastes x10 better than Asda's I feel, HOWEVER, I don't think I could do a 20 min drive on my lunch hour just for a lush sandwich.

PooWillyBumBum · 19/08/2019 19:08

I don’t like ASDA at all but I wouldn’t feel degraded in there - I love shopping at Lidl! Your colleagues would probably look upon my homemade lunches with disdain!

Aprillygirl · 19/08/2019 19:18

@Aprillygirl why? Surely if you are going to be picky about something it’s abour what you eat?

Being picky and being snobby are two very different things. OPs colleagues are snobby and belittling of OP and others who do shop at Asda.

dayswithaY · 19/08/2019 19:18

I am also boycotting Asda right now due to their treatment of staff. Also I've never felt comfortable there after I went for an interview, got the job and only then was told I had to work a shift unpaid to see if they liked me. Seeing as they are owned by Wal-Mart that's just exploitation. I didn't take the job but some people who need the money probably have to.

Itsacrazyworld · 19/08/2019 19:27

@WoollyMollyMonkey 😂😂 love it!! If that ever happens I’ll record them moaning about it 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

Is it Prodrive...? If it is then it’s probably more about the 40 minutes driving time for the petrolheads rather than the niceness of the lunch.

adaline · 19/08/2019 19:36

I used to work at ASDA and absolutely won't shop there now. The new contracts they're forcing on colleagues is absolutely disgusting.

Lovemenorca · 19/08/2019 19:39

The difference between Asda and marks staff is astonishing.

Marks - helpful, engaged, presentable

Asda - the opposite of the above three adjectives

GoGoGoGoGo · 19/08/2019 19:42

They’re food snobs. Who wants to spend 20 minutes of their lunch break driving anyway?

We have a huge Asda not too far from us, I really like the scan and go that they do now.

Rockbird · 19/08/2019 19:43

The thought of eating Asda ready food makes me feel a bit ill

WTF? A bit ill? How ridiculous. I used to be a Tesco devotee, now I have no loyalty and will shop anywhere from Waitrose downwards, and frequently do. But to say the thought of food from a major supermarket (shitty treatment of employees aside) makes you feel ill is ridiculous in the extreme!

Sceptre86 · 19/08/2019 19:47

I love Asda, I shop in lidl for fruit and veg but get the rest of the shop from Asda. Yanbu.

DurhamDurham · 19/08/2019 19:47

I'd be tempted to put my lunch in a Herons bag just to really shock them Grin

adaline · 19/08/2019 20:14

Asda - the opposite of the above three adjectives

ASDA treat their employees shockingly badly - I wouldn't be helpful or engaging if my employer was treating me so appallingly. I used to work there but got out before they introduced the new contracts - my friends who are still there are saying it's just awful.

browzingss · 19/08/2019 20:23

I’ll happily admit that I’m a grocery store snob and would avoid Asda if there’s a M&S nearby. I probably wouldn’t drive 20 minutes (40 min round trip?) on my lunch break though - I’d just pop in before work or bring lunch in.

Asda is gross imo. I’m vegetarian and you can truly taste the difference between fruit & veg from Asda and from M&S. M&S has so many options and I’d be spoilt for choice. Even M&S ready meals taste lovely! Asda on the other hand....

All of the Asda stores that I have been in have been in deprived/‘ghetto’ areas and it shows in the store - think opened goods, flies swarming the bakery, customers getting in arguments etc.

AutumnCrow · 19/08/2019 20:28

Why don't they bring there own swan and gossamer sandwiches to work instead of wasting all that time and petrol?

Itsacrazyworld · 19/08/2019 20:39

I will shop in Asda and Tesco mainly because they are the local supermarkets for me. If there’s a special occasion I will buy from M & S. I would not be embarrassed if seen in Asda, Lidl, primark etc.
This is the first time I ever experienced people not shopping in a specific store due to how they would be perceived.

Lockheart · 19/08/2019 20:50

What kind of person are you if you make your own lunch and take it in? Grin

I've worked in Asda, Co-op and Waitrose. In my experience Co-op was the worst in terms of how they treated their staff, but it's probably down to the manager.

When I go to a supermarket I go to whichever one is most convenient. I have a veritable rainbow of orange / green / white / blue reusable bags. I have absolutely zero brand loyalty.

Youseethethingis · 19/08/2019 20:57

This makes me think of Mrs Bucket and her “new money” silly snobbery tbh - proper well to do types love a good bargain don’t they? Twits.

Hepburn17 · 19/08/2019 20:59

More fool them, I bet you are getting a fresher sandwich, snack + juice in the meal deal , not only for a better price than their 20/40min drive to+from m&s for lunch but you might actually have 20/30 mins spare on your lunch to just chill a bit, text the other half, play a game on your phone, maybe just sit outside for a bit of fresh air...
snobby ar*e dafties in my opinion ConfusedSmile

CTRL · 19/08/2019 21:00

Wish I could afford Asda lol

It’s all about Lidl and aldi for me Grin

Snobby f*ckers commenting on how it’s degrading

Arnoldthecat · 20/08/2019 12:04

Regarding the staff issues at ASDA (someone asked) just google GMB and ASDA. Apparently they brought in a new contract which is voluntary as has been for a while but now ASDA are forcing employees to sign on to it or face dismissal.

DratThatCat · 20/08/2019 12:47

I work for Asda. With the new contracts some will be better off and some will be worse off (mainly night colleagues). We'll get fewer breaks and when we do get them they'll be unpaid. We have to be available to work all bank holidays and must work at least 3 out of 5 of them. Some of my colleagues who haven't signed the contract yet have already been given their 12 week notice to terminate employment.

To the pp who said we weren't presentable, helpful or engaged, I'd just like to say I've been commended on my 'excellent service' in our most recent EFF audit (mystery shopper), so you can keep your generalisations to yourself thank you. This is despite feeling demoralised and unappreciated by Asda.
