To think it’s nothing wrong shopping at Asda?

I work for a well known car racing company. Our offices are based near a large Asda store. There aren’t many places in the area to buy lunch from. The majority of my colleagues will not shop at Asda...as it’s degrading (they say). They would rather drive 15-20 min to a M&S to buy lunch.
I find this ridiculous and I find myself in minority most of the time. I’d rather use my lunch break eating lunch than driving around. Do people find shopping at Asda degrading?

I don't like Asda but not for financial reasons as I shop Aldi/Lidl etc. My nearest Asda, or 'The Asdas' as people here call it, seems to have a smoking problem and you have to walk through a cloud of smoke and dirty overflowing bins and ashtrays to get in. All the staff are always chewing gum (which is a pet hate of mine I know that makes me doing a snob but I am not). The final reason is there are never enough tills open.
And now obviously treatment of staff.
I do miss those giant white chocolate pancakes though ...

loldie99 · 19/08/2019 18:19

Asda are owned by Walmart; I would never shop there because of this. Your colleagues are right to say it's demeaning but not for the reasons they are stating. It's demeaning for the workers who have to tolerate the company’s practices.

SolsticeBabyMaybe · 19/08/2019 18:26

Ethically speaking, I think M&S are worse.

SolsticeBabyMaybe · 19/08/2019 18:28

Oh wait - just saw the Walmart comment, okay they're both terrible!!

Sparklesocks · 19/08/2019 18:30

I feel no snobbyness about it at all - people should be able to shop where they like, and if their money goes further in one supermarket then great. Whatever works.

I do have some issues with the ongoing pay disputes Asda staff are going through - but that isn’t linked to thinking it’s ‘degrading’ to shop there.

Smurf123 · 19/08/2019 18:34

I wish I had a handy asda - their baby fruit pouches are excellent value £1.50 for 5 as opposed to ella kitchens £3.50 for 5 and their kids clothes is also great and good value for growing toddler- plus they actually have a decent selection of boys stuff

longwayoff · 19/08/2019 18:35

Degrading? Why who do they think will see them slumming it? Very peculiar and pretentious colleagues.

Bertieandernie · 19/08/2019 18:38

@CassianAndor omg someone always bringing gender into it!!! This thread isn’t about the gender of clothing ffs Hmm

PuffHuffle5 · 19/08/2019 18:41

They sound like a bunch of c - I really can’t think of a better way to word it. And anyone who is happy to drive 20 mins and back for their lunch in the day is clearly overpaid and not working hard enough.

NoTheresa · 19/08/2019 18:43

Not at all! Those people are being deeply foolish.

Anotherusefulname · 19/08/2019 18:44

*Sotiredofthislife

A lunch from M and S is going to be tastier than from Asda

Why?! What a weird generalisation*

Because in my experience food from Asda is not as nice as from M&S.
I don't like sandwiches and M&S do a better selection of food to go.
Not sure how that is a weird generalisation.

BogglesGoggles · 19/08/2019 18:45

Tbf M&S sandwiches etc are actually fairly ok. The thought of eating Asda ready food makes me feel a bit ill. Wouldn’t be even remotely opposed to popping down for an apple/whatever though. Especially if it saved me time!

NoTheresa · 19/08/2019 18:45

It might not be a weird generalisation but it is completely bonkers. What sane individual drives 20 minutes for a sandwich?🤣

Raphael34 · 19/08/2019 18:47

Aldi or Lidl packed lunches for me 😄

BogglesGoggles · 19/08/2019 18:48

@Aprillygirl why? Surely if you are going to be picky about something it’s abour what you eat?

Pipandmum · 19/08/2019 18:49

Well if it’s causing ‘awkward moments’ they really are snobs.
Waitrose have yummier sandwiches than M&S. It’s the bread.
Maybe you should just get a M&S bag for your sandwiches to save yourself the humiliation!

WoollyMollyMonkey · 19/08/2019 18:51

Am I evil to hope your M&S closes down, to be replaced with an Aldi or Lidl? Grin

BogglesGoggles · 19/08/2019 18:51

@Pretendapony but surely they don’t buy certain things there? I regularly shop in Lidl (no Aldi where I live) but would be wary of eating their meat.

Atlasta · 19/08/2019 18:52

Pretentious idiots.
Who do they think they are? Pity them.

SistersOfMerci · 19/08/2019 18:53

Boggles why would you be wary of eating Aldi or LDL meat?

Yes I find it doesn't last as long in the fridge but all that means is we shop twice a week for it rather than once.

Disfordarkchocolate · 19/08/2019 18:56

I miss being near an Asda, Tesco is our closest and I don't like their bread, meat or fruit and veg. Hey ho.

Strugglingtodomybest · 19/08/2019 18:57

They sound hideous, poor you having to work with them.

Lllot5 · 19/08/2019 18:58

Not a fan of Asda I must admit. My local one has a very strange layout, maybe I’m just not used to it.
But I wouldn’t drive twenty mins to buy a sandwich any way.
Pack up or leftovers here.

NoSauce · 19/08/2019 19:00

I don’t know as I don’t shop there but I did buy a prawn mayo sandwich from Morrisons recently and threw it after one bite and I’m not particularly fussy and was really hungry.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 19/08/2019 19:02

I do all my shopping at Asda.
