Ok am going to admit to liking listening to bit of 1980s power ballad shite. However listing to Phil Collins - and had a thought that it sounds like a sound track for the divorced man. Agree?

Is Phil still suffering from ill health?

I'm seeing him at Madison Square Garden in a few weeks.

Just thought I'd drop that highly unsubtle boast in there Grin

Horehound · 17/08/2019 05:12

I love "I wish it would rain down"

I like him!

Horehound · 17/08/2019 05:26

Monty27

He's self obsessed. Only he doesn't realise it yet confused

Then you say I do like some of his songs, particularly Roxanne. But I simply cannot take the man seriously. He's not been angelic towards women I believe. So it negates genuine passion and love in any of his lyrics. Perhaps Roxanne was about himself metaphorically

@monty27 that would be Roxanne by The Police so I assume you're referring to sting? You haven't got the right person..

daisychain01 · 17/08/2019 06:20

I don't feel in the least bit guilty about enjoying Phil. Tell me the last time you heard brilliant, well written music like his nowadays. It's all XFactor throwaway bands who don't last 5 minutes, Phil's been around decades including his time with Genesis.

Another Day in Paradise is one of his best - a moving song about the struggles people have living on the street. Brilliant lyrics and melody.

Another artist (along with talented singer songwriters like Stevie Winwood, Prince, Tom Petty) where I say to myself "they don't make music like they used to"

daisychain01 · 17/08/2019 06:22

And like PP my heart sank when I saw the thread title. Sad

I'm relieved he's alive and kicking

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/08/2019 06:50

Roxanne = Police.

Can't walk, can't dance etc = Genesis.

Best break up album of all time = Blood on the tracks by Bob Dylan, which would be my Desert Island album, if such a thing existed.

KatherineJaneway · 17/08/2019 08:55

Best Phil Collins song is Separate Lives

MyCatsHat · 17/08/2019 09:25

a bit of Phil on the quiet

:o these confessions are making me think of dimly-lit underground speakeasy joints where middle-aged women furtively shuffle in through an unmarked entrance and lock eyes guiltily with their co-addicts before settling down to an evening of Phil - perhaps on vinyl.

I was never a fan at all but actually now I think about all the songs being mentioned, he did a lot of great songs! Maybe what I need is a Phil covers album by singers I like.

Re Beyonce, so glad others agree! When she finally realises you can't change a cheating disrespectful man by shaming him to the world and forcing him to write his own apologetic album, there is going to be the absolute mother of all break-ups.

MyCatsHat · 17/08/2019 09:34

According to an interview I heard, Sting knows Every Breath You Take is creepy - it's about stalking. He's apparently horrified that people see it as a love song and play it at weddings!
