“Suck your mum”

DD aged 18 said this to me. I said it was offensive and asked her not to say it. She said she and DS aged 15 say it all the time (to each other and to their friends) and it doesn’t mean anything. She says it’s a generation thing. I said that my gran used to use n*gger but it doesn’t mean it’s ok.

AIBU to find it offensive? Do your teenagers say it?

It's certainly not pleasant but not actually sure what it means

Aquamarine1029 · 15/08/2019 17:51

That's a vile thing to say, and I would be telling my children I don't ever want it said in my presence again.

Mookie81 · 15/08/2019 17:52

It basically means 'fuck you'.
When I was a kid people just said 'your mum' Grin.
It is rude though.

ANiceLuxury · 15/08/2019 17:53

Ugh!!!

I have heard it before but when I was a teenager. It was usually said by the “rough kids”

I hate it when kids say “that’s sick that”

It’s scally

Tooner · 15/08/2019 17:54

It sounds very rude and disrespectful even though it makes no sense. I would be really annoyed if any of mine said that. ( Don't have a clue what it means though)

Firedogs12 · 15/08/2019 17:54

Interesting, thanks all

It's basically an offensive way of saying shut up or go away. Used to use it all the time at school.

womaninthedark · 15/08/2019 17:57

I've never heard 'suck your mum' before. It would seem good advice for babies?
When I was teaching pupils said 'your mum', short for 'your mum's a prostitute'.

Watchingthyme · 15/08/2019 17:59

I thought I was going to hear about a story of someone telling their kid to go and suck their mum. Literally.
I don’t know which is worse.

Firedogs12 · 15/08/2019 18:00

Maybe I should offer to give them a breastfeed if they say it again?

I worked in a young offenders prison - heard it every day- worst insult - guaranteed to start a fight. Vile.

Bravelurker · 15/08/2019 18:06

They're always about mums though aren't they. From mother fucker to yer mum, why is that?

PennyNotSoWise · 15/08/2019 18:06

I thought that one had died out a while ago. Used to hear it in school all the time (around 12 years ago).

Very immature for an 18 year old to be saying it though, and downright disgusting to be saying it to her own mother.

libbynaughtz26 · 15/08/2019 18:07

18 year old woman said this? I've heard 14 year old naughty children say it.

It is offensive, of course it is.

thundercats192 · 15/08/2019 18:07

Similar to pp, I also worked in a young offenders institution and it was seen to be the most offensive insult and would inevitably lead to violence.

Never heard it used outside of prison though.

Fatasfooook · 15/08/2019 18:08

Classy

Chocolate35 · 15/08/2019 18:09

It’s so rude. I often tell my teen that I really don’t care what her and her friends say to each other, she does NOT speak to me like that. So yes, it might be normal to them but make it clear that it’s a line not to be crossed.

motherheroic · 15/08/2019 18:10

@Bravelurker Great thing about this insult was you could tailor it. Suck your nan/dad were also pretty common in my school.

BlueJava · 15/08/2019 18:14

I either of my two 17 yo DS said that to me they would be instantly and very clearly told off. I do not expect language like that and don't tolerate it. They would also be apologising.

DirtyJohn · 15/08/2019 18:20

Where I live it's 'yer da sells Avon'

VictoriaBun · 15/08/2019 18:22

It came from ' prison talk ' originally I believe.

womaninthedark · 15/08/2019 18:22

@Firedogs12

Don't make any offers you aren't prepared to follow through.
That would be my advice.

TuffersTickler · 15/08/2019 20:43

No, it's a nasty phrase, used by inner city / urban kids (see also - bumberclart, paigan etc). It's meant to be disgusting and I would not be standing for it.

TuffersTickler · 15/08/2019 20:44

And it's not about breastfeeding...

Watchingthyme · 15/08/2019 20:48

@Firedogs12
Totally do that. And text all her friends, my dd ask me to suckle again, do you ask your mothers to do the same?!
Oh the shame
