My dp is a postie, perhaps the OP could tell her friend that striking isn't something that people take lightly and do without reason. By attempting to get their voices heard, posties and their families are the ones that are truly out of pocket here, but there are some fundamental rights that are worth fighting for. Love the names on her petition tho..

browniedropout · 03/08/2007 23:23

Yep, I had to get in car and post 2 imp issue letters through doors - but still totally support Posties. Should we change this .. to tell Gordon Brown ... The Post Office must be non profit making., Don't make the same mistake as the railways?

SueBaroo · 04/08/2007 00:08

I do wonder if people are that educated about the reason for the strike, though. I know most of the real-life people I speak to just notice the postal service being a bit crapper than usual.

I do wish there was a bit more sense in government so there'd be no need for the strikes - not because I'm against the posties, I'm 100% behind them. I just fear that the days when people really had a clear understanding of the issues means that they won't be behind the strike, really.

Maybe I'm getting to be an old cynic. But I find that MN is a wee bit more socially aware than most of the people I bump into.

SueBaroo · 04/08/2007 00:10

Bloody hell, I can tell it's the witching hour, that made no sense at all.

I meant that I fear the days when people knew what was what in these issues are over.

lillaura123 · 04/08/2007 09:43

wigbammam - how else do u learn unless discussing it - i have learnt alot about it all since talking on thread - but im still against it i had to sit and look at my two year olds face on his birthday when he had only recieved one present - so dont tell me that it doesnt matter when i get my mail and nothing is THAT important - it is to some people me and my family have also lost out on a chance for suitable accomodation due to this - we have been held bk - somethings are more important than bank statements

OP posts:
lulumama · 04/08/2007 10:09

i won;t be signing

I want to live in a democracy, where unfair working conditions can be challenged through strike action, as a last resort

we all have to make some sacrifices for the greater good, to benefit the community as a whole

have read the thread, lillaura, and so far, have not seen one comment that has made me change my mind

NotADragonOfSoup · 04/08/2007 10:11

"somethings are more important than bank statements"

Yes, fair pay and fair working conditions for example. They're even more important then birthday cards/presents too.

lillaura123 · 04/08/2007 10:12

lulu im not trying to change anyones mind!!! wouldnt dream of that its just that i dont agree with it - TTUTT im not even trying to get posties to change mind just want them to see how many people do or dont diagree - and my opinion is that i disagree - its been reely interesting hearing everyones points and views

OP posts:
lillaura123 · 04/08/2007 10:13

what about serious personal issues like housing you didnt comment on that only my ds bday gifts ??

OP posts:
lulumama · 04/08/2007 10:13

i suppose if i had started a thread like this, i would have set out the reasons why i thought the strike should not go ahead, and why i was starting a petition about it

might be worthwhile your friend reading this, to understand why she has been getting horrible comments from posties...

NotADragonOfSoup · 04/08/2007 10:14

Because I have no idea how housing issues work iro alternative communication methods. Phone? Email?

NotADragonOfSoup · 04/08/2007 10:15

And actually, I think fair pay and working conditions for 1000s of people is probably more important than housing for one family. Sorry.

lillaura123 · 04/08/2007 10:18

in the long run i was using that as an example of how others are effected - my view is if its happening to us then similar is happening to someone else so its not one family - without starting another debate on the council and housing too - does anyone really seeing them changing the habit of a lifetime and going out of the way to communicate quicker.. i doubt it lol

The petition is badly phrased, and addresses none of the issues surrounding the strike.

Some of the comments are petty and childish, and I am unsurprised it has had a negative response from postal workers, and their supporters.

I doubt the petition will have any effect.
And I'm glad about that.

The right to strike is important, and we are fortunate to live in a democracy.

Unfortunately these facts appear to have passed by the 'friend' who started the petition.

Perhaps she should investigate the reasons behind the strike, in order to understand why she has been met to such hostility?

Aitch · 04/08/2007 10:25

agree with soupy. v unlikely that people will 'miss out' because of strike alone, because EVERYONE has been affected so a housing officer would have to take that into consideration. and as for the birthday presents thing, my god... how unbelievably selfish. (also if you don't mind me saying, the strike dates were published well in advance so that people could make alternative arrangements, so unless the birthday was a surprise to everyone then they whould have posted in advance).

if anything, the strikes remind me of how wonderful my postie is and i was happy to tell him that.

FlameFlamingo · 04/08/2007 10:30

How is someone's housing being affected? (Have tried scanning the thread but my brain melted with the tedium)

If it is an important issue then people phone, no?!

Not once have I relied on post to sort my housing....

lillaura123 · 04/08/2007 10:31

its not selfish to feel down about having to explain to a 2yo that his birthday will be spent shopping to make up for it as his presents didnt arrive - overall i think the whole issue has not been discussed enough to the public so maybe its the media at fault?? - maybe then we would all agree - then use another service in advance maybe we would then decide that this is easier and not return to useing RM? due to strikes re-occuring.

OP posts:
FlameFlamingo · 04/08/2007 10:32

I don't know if my postie is on holiday, has changed shifts, or just quit, but I keep having strangers I miss him.

A bit like when they changed my one who had been through the pregnancy with me... he delivered my tests, he delivered through my growing bump (often me stumbling to the door half asleep!), he delivered the day after DS was born - and to see a baby in my arms. It was really nice.

FlameFlamingo · 04/08/2007 10:33

But why not order earlier? You knew it was his birthday, you must have known strikes were planned....

there you go. i find it hard to believe that a council wouldn't grant some leeway for a strike so tbh it sounds like bolleaux to me. something else going on there...

lillaura123 · 04/08/2007 10:33

sorry flame - due to postal strike i didnt recieve documentation in regards to suitable housing for my family and have now been informed that it has been held bk at least 6 months due to application being cancelled

well you have to appeal that decision as it is completely unreasonable. your council will have an appeals process, you must take it up with them.
