I will soon be an ex CWU member

southeastastra · 03/08/2007 22:05

i can't believe this thread. nice to come home to. my dp has lost four days money so far. he voted against striking. god i'm depressed now.

elasticsortinghandstand · 03/08/2007 22:06

in some places they don't have to strike, do they have to in his?

2shoes · 03/08/2007 22:09

southeastastra I am sure most people realise they don't do it for fun.

WigWamBam · 03/08/2007 22:09

I respect other people's views, lillaura, when those people have taken the time to inform themselves, and when they have understood the background to whatever it is they are discussing, rather than just making a knee-jerk reaction to a little inconvenience.

Your friend hasn't, and neither have you.

MerlinsBeard · 03/08/2007 22:16

some days you get post, some days you don't. can't say i have been affected by the strike to be honest.

stop posting this all over active convos... its annoying and there is no need. i think the consensus on here is YABU. YOu can tell your "friend" that and please stop copy and pasting...it counts as spam you know and that means we can report you !

DreamtOfMandalay · 03/08/2007 22:16

Leaving aside the fact that your friend obviously doesn't know the first thing about the complicated history behind the dispute, what exactly would she like to happen?

Does she want the right to strike rescinded by number ten, so that our employers have the green light to do whatever they like with no fear of comeback from their workers?

Re her comment on the petition website: "Royal Mail keep going on strike and there are important letters that need to be delivered but are not as they are on strike to often and it has to stop or get rid of royal mail and get a new company to take over." There ARE many other companies that can deliver your letters, this is partly what the strike is about!

She is not being unreasonable starting a petition, but she is being unreasonable wading into a debate without bothering to find out the first thing about it.

TheArmadillo · 03/08/2007 22:19

The right to strike is very important part of our political system.

I'm not giving that up because of a couple of days of mild inconvinience.

Irrespective of the posties reasons as to why they are striking, I wouldn't sign a petition against any strikes.

peanutbear · 03/08/2007 22:22

Your being unreasonable for spoiling my mumsnet fun by posting these all over the board I cat get away from them

And what do you think the petition is going do immedialymake Royal MAil bow to the union (doubt it )

or do you expect the government to take away the right of british people to strike

I think your friend needs to say exactly what she hopes to acomplish by starting it then maybe she wouldnt have so much trouble if people thought she was trying to ge better working conditions

peanutbear · 03/08/2007 22:23

excuse typos children and laptops dont mix (weetabix again)

browniedropout · 03/08/2007 22:24

To: Those who don't care how post gets to you - Should UK have the same working conditions as non EU? £3 per week, 2p per line typing (India). Complete loss of worker power= squashing of humanity. That's why I hope posties don't give in - The last Post....

expatinscotland · 03/08/2007 22:25

Where's your pal, laura?

Why isn't she here telling us why we should sign this petition?

emj23 · 03/08/2007 22:35

The postal strike is a bit inconvenient but of course they have the right to strike, and starting such a petition because your friend had to wait a bit longer for a letter seems a bit over the top to me.

wannaBe · 03/08/2007 22:37

and maybe more people should use email and the internet to communicate and save the rain forests. that way they wouldn't have to wait for that all important letter - it would just pop up into their inbox

2shoes · 03/08/2007 22:39

aww but wannabee that doesn't help my dear old 80 year mil who has sent us a cheque for £100 for our holiday. she is in such a panic as it hasn't turned up. (she was so worried we wouldn't give the dc's their bit)

expatinscotland · 03/08/2007 22:41

Reassure her, then, 2shoes. She remembers the time when people mucked in together.

browniedropout · 03/08/2007 22:41

Lillilaua.123, completely Agree we shouldnt get fixated on grammer, spoils the conversation, and to the one who thinks its too heavy.. good to find someone awake on a Fri night who will irc.

themoon66 · 03/08/2007 22:43

Yes, there are other companies that can deliver your letters, but not all letter and not to ALL of you. These companies will cherry pick and the unprofitable deliveries will lose their service or pay through the nose for it.

Get a grip OP.
(always wanted to say 'get a grip' on MN )

wannaBe · 03/08/2007 22:44

oh there will always be some need for paper mail. but so many things can be done electronically now. I don't get bank statemets as can download them off the net, people don't generally write to each other any more because of email, so imo if the amount of mail has increased it's more down to the amount of promotional crap that companies send out than anything else. And there really is no need for any of that - why bother sending me credit card invites just so I can recycle them.

2shoes · 03/08/2007 22:47

expat i have bless her.

expatinscotland · 03/08/2007 22:48

I have faith in the people here. I think they've got it in them, when it hits the fan, to try to stick together.

I hope!

southeastastra · 03/08/2007 22:51

it will happen in time wannabe, but alot of people aren't computer literate yet.

and can anyone really see a private company deliver next day for the price of a first class stamp.

if everyone could do the job for one day, they'd see why they're striking.

years ago my dp had to pass a test to join, loads didn't pass.

he also had to deal with dogs, lunatics, drug dealers well the british public.

for his troubles he has suffered years of back problems, not to mention the havoc of getting up at 4.00 every day.

thank god he is now office based, though i see him from 7 to 7.45 in the morning, then 9.30 at night. though he still deals with the public and the amount of shit they give him is fucking incredible.

expatinscotland · 03/08/2007 22:52

Show her south's post, then, 2shoes, I'm sure she can relate.

I know I can!

themoon66 · 03/08/2007 22:55

Southeast.... tell your DP 99% of people support him.

potoroo · 03/08/2007 22:59

What Armidillo said.

I think RM service is excellent,as are the posties in my area, but I suspect that is down to the workers like SEA's DP.
