BetterEatCheese · 12/08/2019 22:52

Do you win much?! Love this!

Saracen · 13/08/2019 01:46

I love chess. It gives me a real buzz to figure out something tricky. I can practice and improve. Progress is measurable. You get a grading/rating based on how often you win and how strong your opponents are (like a golf handicap) and it is satisfying to see it creep upwards over time. There are lots of free learning resources online, where you can solve puzzles which translate into more wins over the board.

It's a game for life, in which people of any age and gender, including those with a range of disabilities, can compete on an equal footing. The youngest player in my club is five and the eldest is 87. I want to be like him when I grow up!

For reasons which are believed to be purely historical/societal, few women play chess. To try to encourage more women into chess, there are often extra prizes and a few special events. So if you're a woman, you could easily aspire to be one of the country's top female players. As an example, I am a very middling player, yet when I play in the English Women's Championship later this month I may manage to finish in the top ten, which would be fun!

Running and cat shows - I've recently got back into both but I broke my toe and the running is put on hold for a bit....

The cat shows are fun but expensive and addictive, my toe needs to get better so I can concentrate on my cheaper hobby! Grin

Knitting. Photography. Baking, although I mostly only do that when I'm stressed. The measuring and mixing make me feel calm. Plus when you're done, there are brownies.

Curious2468 · 13/08/2019 03:18

Pets, board games, world of war craft, crafting, binge watching Netflix lol

OvO · 13/08/2019 03:23

Cross stitching. That takes up a surprisingly large amount of my free time.

Bimbop5 · 13/08/2019 03:49

I just got back into rollerskating! And painting. Oh and kayaking.

Atropa · 13/08/2019 06:13

I sew, make cards, 3D sculpt, draw, paint, bake and cook. Hardly a day passes without one of those, they keep me sane.

BillywilliamV · 13/08/2019 06:15

I have just started to learn the piano in my 50’s. It is bloody hard but I LOVE it!!

JemimaPuddlePeacock · 13/08/2019 06:17

I play the piano, listen to music and discuss music and go to gigs, use adult colouring books, read a lot, play a few video games (mostly the sims haha), and I’d probably class cooking as a hobby too as I’m really into food and trying new dishes and recipes rather than just eating whatever’s available if you see what I mean.

JemimaPuddlePeacock · 13/08/2019 06:20

Oh and I really enjoy going to talks on topics that interest me. Off the top of my head, this year I went to ones on: sexism in the workplace, unionising, transport deserts, refugee migration, the erosion of workers’ rights on the railways, and a few other political thinkers giving talks.

They were all free and within a ten mile distance from where I live. I check out what local debate festivals and talk festivals are on and use Facebook events a fair bit to find things that look interesting.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 13/08/2019 06:22

Gin. Cake. Sleeping.

StoatofDisarray · 13/08/2019 06:25

Dungeons and Dragons, old school.

polkadotpixie · 13/08/2019 06:27

I play Pokémon Go

MrsNezbit · 13/08/2019 07:01

Just discovered the beauty of sewing and making my own clothes. I love everything about it Grin

Jurassicmuma · 13/08/2019 07:03

Crochet, cooking, brush lettering, gardening, the gardening is a new one but suddenly I'm obsessed with growing vegetables and beautiful plants. I never thought it would interest me

TroubleTremble · 13/08/2019 07:21

Running (Parkrun is brilliant), baking, landscape photography, yoga, reading, hiking and writing poetry.

I love eating out, swimming and going to the cinema but all three are expensive so are occasional activities.

Thegracefuloctopus · 13/08/2019 07:29

Sewing and quilting. I love it when a friend or colleague says "damn my clothes have ripped" and I can say "ill sort that for you tonight" (happened yesterday!)

Dec2019mumtobe · 13/08/2019 07:34

Sewing, a bit of embroidery (look up hoop art on Pinterest and you'll soon want to make cute designs for your walls!) and cross stitch kits. I am about to start one from The Make Arcade.

I also have two dogs!

lastqueenofscotland · 13/08/2019 07:38

Running, it takes up a huge amount of my time and is like having a second job.l as I’ve found myself leading a c25k group, on the committee for a huge club and on the core team of a parkrun.

I go to a lot of football and punk gigs too.

Megan2018 · 13/08/2019 07:39

I have a horse, very time consuming hobby (and lots of £) but amazingly social as well as totally rewarding. I used to compete a bit but horse now semi retired.
I also keep hens and we also have cats-I’m all about the animals!
Not much time for other things but I do love books too and eating out.
