Absolutely @dollydaydream114

Hoghgyni · 13/08/2019 10:04

Tennis 2-4 times each week. I play in a mixed league which means we may find ourselves playing 2 men, 2 ladies or any combination in between with ages between 15 to 75. We usually lose, but see every game we win as a small victory.

TheVanguardSix · 13/08/2019 10:07

Walking, music/playing violin/gigs, reading (loads), writing, pet-sitting/animal care (voluntary).

Rubbinghimsweetly2 · 13/08/2019 10:15

I sing.

Had notions when I was younger that I'd knock Mariah Carey off her number 1 spot in the charts.

I met a bit instead and got married.

Left him when I was 35 and went back to singing. I love it!

Mariah Carey is safe for now as I can only sing in front of my singing teacher who is an amazing soprano.

I try to have at least one hobby for my mind, one for my heart and one for my body.

Body: swimming and running ( I have a swim coach and I run almost every day- really good for my mental health), cycle with partner occasionally and try to do yoga regularly for recovery.

Heart: Travel- we have been to Sweden, the Netherlands, France and the lake district (twice) so far this year, We still have Slovenia and Portugal to go.

Mind: I am constantly trying to learn something new. At the moment I'm studying the theories behind Emotional intelligence(EQ) vs IQ

countrygirl99 · 13/08/2019 10:20

I have a horse though he is too old to compete anymore, so we just mooch around the countryside. I'm also learning Spanish.

BeneathTheMist · 13/08/2019 10:22

Watching with interest. I am v boring and need the inspiration 😀

IdblowJonSnow · 13/08/2019 10:31

The gym, walking, go to a choir, seeing friends.
Does eating out and watching tv count?! Blush
I also love getting away for a few days whenever possible, visiting new places when I can.

BeneathTheMist · 13/08/2019 10:32

ooh @whothedaddy that is a great way to break it down.

Body - walking but would love to get into the gym again

Heart - Travel often solo as single, have gone to more places since splitting with ex than I did in the 12 years with him

Mind - Meditation, listening to calming, often Indian music, would really like to study body language or something like that. I read avidly when I get into it, but not enough (too much bloody mn-inig). I've promised myself to read the book The Psychopath Test, by Jon Ronson.

IdblowJonSnow · 13/08/2019 10:33

And mumsnet - I spend way too much time on here...

BlooperReel · 13/08/2019 10:41

Interested to know how you all find the time, do you all work full time? I would love to get back into writing, which I used to love, and swimming, but I am out of the house 7.10am - 6.30pm everyday, by the time I have got dinner sorted, homework, baths, hung a wash out etc, I am too knackered to do anything else and it's about 9pm. :(

I'm a figure skater, been doing it for 15 years now. It is the best workout, and definitely beats the gym

How old were you when you started. Do you have a coach? And what standard are you at now? I always fantasised about being a figure skater but my nearest ice-rink is 5 hours away. (We have a Christmas one, but it's awful.) But this year, I started roller and inline skating and discovered that artistic roller skating (figure skating on roller skates) is a thing. I'm only learning from youtube but it's absolutely great and I'm amazed with how quickly it's coming to me. I'm just about at the 3 turns and waltz jump stage, as in I can do them but they take obvious concentration. But in the next few weeks, when they come naturally, it will open up a lot more jumps. I can't believe that at 40, I've become able to do things that seemed as out of reach as super powers. I know that they are only entry level figure skating moves but they seemed genuinely unobtainable even 6 months ago. Something that would never be for me. So the thought of what the next 6 months will bring is insanely exciting.

There are also some great aspects of roller skating from it's own history like jam and rhythm skating which are just great for their own beauty and fun. Vert or aggressive skating, which is honestly just amazing fun. I never had any desire to ramp skate but DS asked me to take him a few months ago, so I brought my skates along and fell in love with it. I'm pretty basic at the moment but I've a long term goal of doing a handstand at the top of the half-pipe. I also do endurance and slalom freestyle on inline skates. While I love to dance on my skates, I've also developed a deep need to just skate and skate for a very long time. I like to do a couple of 20km+ skates a week on my inlines and when I get the opportunity, enjoy just doing a marathon distance for the heck of it.

The fitness benefits are amazing. My body is so toned and really nicely muscular. My 40 year old butt looks like it did when I was 22. Once I started working on waltz jumps and some jam skating moves that require serious core strength I started to form visible abs. It's like a dream I never even had come true. An accidental 6 pack! My whole stomach area was a horrendous mess after a number of surgeries on my stomach and pregnancy with a giant baby ending in an EMCS. I had just accepted it as how it would look forever as I wouldn't be getting surgery for cosmetic reasons. And now it's nearly so toned that even the excess skin is being pulled back and the pooch over the section scar is shrinking and pulling up. I don't skate for the fitness and cosmetic benefits, I skate because it's like flying and truly living what's always been a fantasy but I can't say that I'm not also completely delighted with what skating has done to my body.

Not really a hobbie as such but I LOVE to read, I honestly cant get enough! Thriller/mystery/fiction. I've gone through 5 books this summer alone, love getting all my cleaning done early, wash in the machine, kids settled (doesnt usually last long) and get out a good book with a cuppa! I'll only get a few minutes at a time throughout the day but when kids are in bed it's my book & a blanket &, usually some snacks x

soulrunner · 13/08/2019 11:08

Running and weight training. They're a bit shit as hobbies though as I don't really like them (or at least I dont feel deep joy) when I'm doing them, but how I feel afterwards makes it worth while.

Cryalot2 · 13/08/2019 11:15

Annoying my family ( it seems that way)
I have always been an avid reader, photography and crochet and basic knitting and crafts. I enjoy praying and spending time with dog.

millimollimandi · 13/08/2019 11:28

No one's mention geocaching! A great way to get out of the house and can do with kids if you have them (mine are grown up).
Reading
Writing novels and plays (I think I have just outed myself!)
Scrapbooking/papercrafts
cross stitch (more designing and stitching)
tie dyeing
I need to retire!!

DearDeirdre · 13/08/2019 11:28

Cycling, gym and going to the theatre

Pipandmum · 13/08/2019 11:29

I do Pilates and gym but that’s a necessity not a hobby.
Love reading. Wet felting though hard to find the time as not something you can do for less than four hours.
Eating seems to be s big hobby at the moment...

BringOnTheScience · 13/08/2019 11:29

Guiding leader- so rewarding to see our girls take on new challenges and learn skills with friends from outside school.

LARP - I spend occasional weekends being someone else entirely: don't even have to be a human! It also includes camping and all sorts of craft skills.

Pipandmum · 13/08/2019 11:29

And about to start marathon chutney/jelly/jam session as my trees are fruiting nicely!

Wow @alittleprivacy, what an amazing post. I used to love to skate on my inlines as a pre-teen and a teenager. I haven't skated for years (other than ice skating with the family at Christmas time). I love being on skates, I find it so soothing. You've just inspired me to get a new pair of skates. Any recommendations? I'm better on inlines than traditional skates.
