Light hearted... But AIBU to think that my sister (who has a PhD) should know this?

My sister had her baby a couple of months ago. He had a fever, tested for bacteria but no bacteria grew so it was ruled. My elimination process it had to be a a virus... To which her anwer was... "But I thought breast milk gave the baby all viral antibodies!" I almost wanted to strangle her... Obviously you only pass the ones you're immune to! AIBU to think she should know this? Especially considering she's not dumb as she has a PhD in criminal law??

She has a PhD in criminal law not virology. Give the lass a break!

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 08/08/2019 16:50

Confused how would a PhD in criminal law mean that she would know this?

She's a new mum, learning new things, give her a break.

Rainbowhairdontcare · 08/08/2019 16:50

Nor do I! My field is Sociology and I knew it! Even my mum (a historian) knew this... And we've had cats with kittens.. that's how I knew about it in the first place. Although that was more than 20 years ago.

I know it says light hearted...but you sound aggressive and condescending.

Bobbiepin · 08/08/2019 16:52

You know a piece of information that she doesn't. We can't all know everything. Cut her some slack.

Shoxfordian · 08/08/2019 16:52

I didn't know it
Give her a break

vodkaredbullgirl · 08/08/2019 16:52

give her a break

Rainbowhairdontcare · 08/08/2019 16:53

She was given the whopping cough vaccine, so I think that's when it would have
been brought to her attention. I just thought this was common knowledge

growlingbear · 08/08/2019 16:54

New mother's brain is less sharp than usual. Wonder why. Hmm Just be nice to your sister.

PorkHollywood · 08/08/2019 16:54

I bet she knows loads of shit you don't. Getting big Ross Geller vibes from you 😬

MissRabbitNeedsAHoliday · 08/08/2019 16:55

I didn't know that either, and went to the bteastfeeding workshop things before I had dd Blush
Given that her PHD is in a subject totally unrelated I think she can be forgiven for not knowing.

22Giraffes · 08/08/2019 16:56

There's a million and one new things you learn when you become a new parent, give her break. This doesn't seem light hearted, more that you're laughing at her Sad

Marvinmarvinson · 08/08/2019 16:56

Wtf. Nobody knows EVERYTHING. Not even people with a PhD. I hope you didn't make her feel shitty/stupid.

There is a mechanism when breastfeeding where if the baby passes a vrius to Mum her body produces antibodies and these are then transferred back to baby when they feed. Takes a couple of hours but it's pretty quick! So she's not far off...? Also wouldn't necessarily expect her to know everything just cause she has a PhD!

whothedaddy · 08/08/2019 16:57

Slags off sister for not knowing something then spells whooping wrong. lol

Iggity · 08/08/2019 16:58

My husband has a 1st class honours degree (1st in his year) and a PhD in non-medical subject. He probably wouldn’t know either and I wouldn’t expect him to. A PhD means you know an awful lot about a tiny area of research which you’ve contributed to. Not anything more.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 08/08/2019 17:00

Grin Grin Grin

Rainbowhairdontcare · 08/08/2019 17:00

She lives in Switzerland and I know the health system over there is a lot more about alternative medicine, so maybe that has something to do with it.

GroggyLegs · 08/08/2019 17:00

Hope the BF is going well for her.
It can be tough.

Go and get her a cuppa & a biscuit, because you aren't being very nice to her.

Marvinmarvinson · 08/08/2019 17:01

What does your link prove?! Nobody is saying you're wrong, they're just saying it's OK for your sister not to know this stuff.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 08/08/2019 17:01

Well, I bet your sister can spell "whooping".

God, I'm glad you're not my sister.

vodkaredbullgirl · 08/08/2019 17:03

Good job she does live in Switzerland and not near you.

Hope she doesnt come on here and see you slagging her off, for not knowing something.

Rainbowhairdontcare · 08/08/2019 17:03

I know she got the basics of immunology right, but you have to be immune regardless. I just found it amusing, that's all :)
