Light hearted... But AIBU to think that my sister (who has a PhD) should know this?

My sister had her baby a couple of months ago. He had a fever, tested for bacteria but no bacteria grew so it was ruled. My elimination process it had to be a a virus... To which her anwer was... "But I thought breast milk gave the baby all viral antibodies!" I almost wanted to strangle her... Obviously you only pass the ones you're immune to! AIBU to think she should know this? Especially considering she's not dumb as she has a PhD in criminal law??

A PhD is a very specific piece of research in a very narrow field. It's doesn't mean you are now an expert on everything!
Give the new mum a break.

GCAcademic · 08/08/2019 17:03

So your sister is a new parent, with a sick baby, no doubt stressed out, and your reaction is to start a thread on Mumsnet about how thick she is? Fuck me, I’m glad I don’t have siblings!

Treaclesweet · 08/08/2019 17:05

You sound like a cowbag I hope you're not this horrible to your sister, a new mother, in real life.

Personally I think its pretty stupid to assume that having a phD in an unrelated field would leave you better informed as to immunology.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 08/08/2019 17:08

We could make a lighthearted list of things you don't know, OP, and then mock you lightheartedly for them?

The spelling of "whooping".
How to proofread a sentence to avoid embarrassing typos.
The fact that no-one should EVER use more than one question mark to end a sentence, and that with both exclamation marks and ellipses, the general rule is not to overuse them.

YouKnowOneDayAtATime · 08/08/2019 17:08

Aren’t you a treat?

Rainbowhairdontcare · 08/08/2019 17:09

Maybe I'm this way as she's been this way with me a million times. Told a million times how a terrible mother I was and undermining my authority with my own daughter, but that's a completely different matter!

You sound mean.

ShitArmBadTattoo · 08/08/2019 17:11

Your field is sociology but you don’t know much about how to interact with people, so... 🤷🏻‍♀️

Springfern · 08/08/2019 17:12

I'm currently writing up my PhD in public health. I did know this. Tbh a PhD probably makes you less knowledgable as your head is overflowing with, mostly useless, entirely arcane knowledge

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 08/08/2019 17:13

Gosh, how unusual - thread doesn't go how op wants - drip feed about what a big meany the new mum with a poorly baby is.

BikeRunSki · 08/08/2019 17:14

I have a PhD in civil engineering but I know bog all about virology.

Proseccoinamug · 08/08/2019 17:15

Sorry OP, you’re wrong. There’s a biofeedback system where the mother’s body produces antibodies to a virus affecting the baby and transfers immunity in breast milk.

SockQueen · 08/08/2019 17:17

It's also not quite as simple as breastfeeding mother with immunity = baby with immunity. A lot of the antibodies are too big to be absorbed by baby's gut, so while breastmilk immunity is great for e.g. gut infections, it doesn't prevent absolutely everything else that mother is immune to.

Rainbowhairdontcare · 08/08/2019 17:18

What's your source?

OP posts:
BraveGoldie · 08/08/2019 17:22

I have a PhD and don't have a clue about viruses or a million other things..... 🤪

ManderlyAgain · 08/08/2019 17:24

I think you’ve got a bit of a chip on your shoulder about your sister’s PhD.

Justaboy · 08/08/2019 17:24

I know a LOT of people with degrees who have no idea at all on how to change a bloody light bulb!

I kid ye not!

ImpossibleGirl86 · 08/08/2019 17:27

What a knob. I don't mean the sister.

Wishihad · 08/08/2019 17:30

So not lighthearted in the slightest then?

You just wanted to post to make fun of her?

Nice Hmm

5foot5 · 08/08/2019 17:31

Ha yes! You took the words right out of my mouth.

SexFarmWoman · 08/08/2019 17:31

Way to make yourself look like an insecure arse there OP

Iggly · 08/08/2019 17:32

I’m a qualified accountant - should I know the basics of immunology??

You two sounds delightful 😂

RedWoollyHat · 08/08/2019 17:40

This isn't "lighthearted", just downright bitchy.

TSSDNCOP · 08/08/2019 17:50

Well aren’t you a clever fucking Trevor.

strawberrisc · 08/08/2019 17:50

What a knob. I don't mean the sister
