To think Mr Big really is a shit?

I used to watch Sex and the City and think Big was the ideal man. Handsome, wealthy etc., but I'm rewatching the entire series now and he's just awful to Carrie. Why does she put up with it and keep going back to him?!

Not that she's much better.

Loved satc too! I was jealous of carries wardrobe but not the men. Aidan was lovely and after she binned him look what happens, unavailable big, more issues than vogue Berger and vom Alexaaaaaaander. No thanks!
Harry was the best husband but tbf you get to see Charlotte grow as a person and embrace flaws. The miscarriage storyline was hard going.

I loved Samantha the most and she's the only emotionally congruent character

@Turnedouttoes and @Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername

It's being shown on Sky Atlantic as far as my now tv app shows - all six seasons.

@Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername @Turnedouttoes yep all series on now tv!

showmethegin · 08/08/2019 21:12

I think Miranda was the nicest but that thing when she took Steve to a really expensive suit place was really shitty, she totally humiliated him

crispysausagerolls · 08/08/2019 21:22

Can’t believe all the Miranda love! She was so unbelievably insecure and man-hating and actually plain rude. On several dates she rips men to shreds and treats them like absolute shit! She’s actually fairly appalling to Steve too.

None of the characters have any redeeming qualities - but I still love Samantha and Charlotte.

Carrie was the ultimate annoyance to watch - and the bloody clothes!

Thanks both @showmetheginand @buzz

I loved and kind of aspired to it in my 30s. Now in my 40s the focus on labels and things and money seems very shallow and materialistic, but there was a lot of conspicuous consumption disguised as feminism going on at the time it was made and it kind of played into that.

They're not actually all awful all the time as characters. There are plenty of points where Carrie sits and listens to the others and tries to help them and vice versa. It's just that the bits where they are shallow and nasty to each other really stand out because they're better television than women being nice and supportive to each other.

But yes actually I do agree a bit with the people who said that Miranda was taken down a peg or two. I also never forgave them for giving the only genuinely guiltlessly sexual character, who always took responsibility for her own choices and contraception, cancer. I felt that Samantha was punished for being promiscuous, or rather for not being sufficiently guilty/needy about it.

Hobsbawm · 11/08/2019 14:12

Most of the characters were pretty awful but that's why I liked it. They were deeply flawed, not grossed over 2D characters - they weren't meant to be nice and decent, they were meant to be flawed. The characters were meant to be ones we liked at times and didn't like at others. That was part of the appeal, for me at least. It was such a refreshing change, at the time, from programmes with supposedly 'perfect' characters who were often actually odious but we we were supposed to think they weren't.

The films were just awful.

Hobsbawm · 11/08/2019 14:12

*glossed over, not grossed!

Toomuchgoingon · 11/08/2019 14:52

@roseenglishrose I was thinking exactly the same so thought the title was a bit mean. Poor Mr Big.
