To think Mr Big really is a shit?

I used to watch Sex and the City and think Big was the ideal man. Handsome, wealthy etc., but I'm rewatching the entire series now and he's just awful to Carrie. Why does she put up with it and keep going back to him?!

Not that she's much better.

Bunny was ace!

If I ever need a laugh my go to is the episode where Miranda’s mother dies and Charlottes in charge of the flowers.

picklejimmy · 07/08/2019 16:55

It was short for Mr Big Shot or something like that, because he had loads of money

MirandaOnce · 07/08/2019 17:01

Big was the ideal man. Handsome, wealthy etc

This is probably your problem right there- what about being kind or funny or supportive- arent those the characteristics that should make up the ideal man?

Probably but I was a young teenager when it was first on and I didn't think about it particularly then or since.

How people can watch the show and feel sorry for any of them, is a sad indictment of how morals have changed.

I can't help but ask - what morals have changed and since when?

Oh God yes...the "Russian" ....wtaf !!!! Bigs name was John, if I remember correctly

Bojheybuddy · 07/08/2019 17:42

What about the time that Carrie emotionally blackmailed Charlotte to sell her engagement ring from Big so that she could buy her apartment from Aiden having spent all her money on shoes? Hmm

Bojheybuddy · 07/08/2019 17:43

Sorry that should have been Trey Blush

Tellmetruth4 · 07/08/2019 17:44

Aiden was emotionally abusive, couldn’t stand him. Carrie was a narcissist though so her and Big were a good match.

Team Aidan all the way!!!

Anxietyandwine · 07/08/2019 17:48

Wouldn’t it be a boring watch if they fell in love in ep1 and we watched their happy (but far less exciting) married life unfold. What would she write about?

Propertyofhood · 07/08/2019 17:54

I never got it wirh Big - he wasn't even that good looking, a total arse and so dull as well. His only redeeming feature was his cash!

Carrie going back to him after he left her at the altar, after everything else as well, was just ridiculous.

But then she was always a bellend as well so I think they were quite a good match in the end.

LittleSweet · 07/08/2019 17:55

I think that Kim Catrell is the 'outsider' from what I've read.
I have no idea why, she's fantastic!

That's why. She is fantastic and they are threatened and jealous because she is obviously the star of the show.
I love Aiden and Harry. I love Samantha, Dr Robert and Smith. Carrie is a dreadful person. I couldn't believe it when she sent Aiden round when Miranda fell and hurt her back. Then bought the 'bullshit bagels' round to 'apologise' but actually brought them round so she could bitch about whatever man problem she was having.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 07/08/2019 17:58

MirandaOnce "Carrie has just stood up Miranda for dinner with Big instead. Literally gets a phone call from a dressed up Miranda who asks where she is and Carrie isn't even apologetic. She's a terrible friend."

Omg, I watched that exact episode last night Grin I'm so distracted by all the smoking, let alone what a whiny bint Carrie is!

fluffygown · 07/08/2019 18:09

I'm rewatching the series too and agree! They were made for each other really, both seeking the thrill and both quickly getting bored in relationships. It's hilarious to watch again though, don't think anything else comes close. Although after a while, Carrie is too much, soooooo self-centred but I guess her column is all about her and her sex life etc!

I do love Miranda too and Steve is so sweet. I liked Aidan before but now rewatching it he does come across as a bit of a drip. Samantha is hilarious. I just watched the episode where she tells the others that it may come as a surprise but she is actually older than them Grin

Scuttlingherbert · 07/08/2019 18:12

I've really enjoyed re-watching them all recently too!

Have you listened to the Origins SATC podcast?
I really enjoyed it - it came out last year and they interviewed loads of the actors and people involved with the show (except Kim Cattral).
Apparently Chris Noth is nothing like Big in real life!

jay55 · 07/08/2019 18:39

I always wanted Miranda to date her intellectual equal. She was sharp and fun and ambitious and would have been awesome with someone who got her and challenged her.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 07/08/2019 18:44

Mr Big's 'real' name was John James Preston.

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 07/08/2019 19:17

Where are all the re-runs being shown?

hoorayforharoldlloyd · 07/08/2019 19:24

Yes to miranda getting her intellectual equal! She was always my favourite.

Whocansay · 07/08/2019 19:30

I don't think he was a shit. Carrie was just always so fucking NEEDY. And he forgave her for kissing Aiden.

I loved the show until Series 5, when they started playing Samantha for laughs. She ended up being a bit of a caricature. She was the best character by a long way. They pulled it back in Series 6 though for her cancer storyline.

I don't know how Charlotte had any friends. She was extraordinarily shallow and irritating.

Team Smith here Smile

And mind blown that Kim Cattrall is in the new Horrible Histories movie. Just had a look at the cast - it looks amazing!

roseenglishrose · 07/08/2019 19:31

I'm such a loser - I though this thread was about the book I've just read to my toddler!

To think Mr Big really is a shit?
TwistedStrawberry · 07/08/2019 19:38

See I agree that the characters were very flawed people, but that's what made it great for me. People are flawed, women too! It was one of the only shows of the time that showed women who were not perfect, who liked sex, who could be selfish and shallow. They all had unpleasant traits, and they all had redeeming ones too.

Lazydaisies · 07/08/2019 19:41

Miranda, Aiden and Harry. The rest of ‘em are wankers. Literally.

rosegoldwatcher · 07/08/2019 19:57

Is Mr Big really a shit?
Abso-fuckin-lutely! (But I love Chris Noth!)

SarahAndQuack · 07/08/2019 20:05

Oh, I used to love SATC - it was on while I was doing my A Levels and our English teacher used to let us discuss it (with far more energy and analysis than we had to spare for the boring novel we were meant to be reading) on Friday afternoons.

Big is awful. Berger's nastiness about the scrunchie really irritated me - so petty and sulky. A real red flag IMO.

I also hated that Steve is effectively the writers' way of taking Miranda down a peg or two. Dare to be a successful, high-earning, attractive lawyer with rather fewer neuroses than your friends? You will have to fall in love with a man who earns much less (! the horror!), and whose mother is shite to you.

Smith wasn't that great either. Remember the bit where he whines to Samantha that her ad campaign has made him attractive to gay men? And he doesn't like the idea.

Ihatesundays · 07/08/2019 20:12

For a series about a group of friends they are crappy friends to each other.
The bit in the film where they tell Samantha she is a bit fat is disgraceful.
