To think Mr Big really is a shit?

I used to watch Sex and the City and think Big was the ideal man. Handsome, wealthy etc., but I'm rewatching the entire series now and he's just awful to Carrie. Why does she put up with it and keep going back to him?!

Not that she's much better.

I actually forgot about Berger until PP mentioned him. I’d got him confused with Aiden. It was Berger who was emotionally abusive. Aiden was just a whiny drip.

Berger was the worst, the episode where she goes out for dinner and says she’s allergic to parsley, as she doesn’t like it, and he gets arsey with her for lying about it 🙄

It was of it's time. I loved this show, it was fun, stylish and sassy.
I would totally have gone out for dinner with Big. (If he'd asked me)

I couldn't stand Aiden either. He was utterly condescending to Carrie and he showed his true colours when he tried to evict her out of spite.

I did like Big, he could be an arse at times but he just seemed like a relatively decent sort underneath it all.

I love rewatching SATC every couple years, only recently finished it again. It hasn't aged well though. Surprising how much the smoking stands out.

Ugh Big and Carrie were as bad as each other.

Harry was the only nice man after Steve cheated - that storyline annoyed me

Carrie was horrible. She was a rubbish friend and very self centred and selfish.

Big was too that’s why they were suited imo.

Agreed. He was reasonably good-looking (no more than that) and very rich, but quite boring and shallow. Which made him the perfect match for Carrie, who was equally vapid and narccisistic.

Still nowhere near as awful as Berger, who was just plain nasty in a very realistic way. I think SATC did a good job of portraying a relationship where the man absolutely hates himself becausehis woman is richer and more succesful than him, and takes it out on her. Remember the time he deliberately rode really really fast on his motorbike, with Carrie on the pilion, just so as to scare her? Yuck. Though it's very dated in many ways now, SATC was ahead of the times in portraying what a relationship with an emotionally abusive person looks like, and it ain't pretty.

Oh god, Berger throwing a hissy fit over the scrunchie is the absolute worst. I don’t remember anything else about him but that’s enough. Mikhail Baryshnikov is also the very worst man in the world and Aiden is a whinging bore with a nasty streak who is a sad disappointment to old Northern Exposure fans. By comparison with that lot Big looks like heaven on earth: funny, sexy, not overly given to being a passive aggressive nightmare, with all the money and not shy about sharing it. Flawed I grant you, but much more fun to watch.

I made the mistake of rewatching SATC last year. It hasn’t aged well. Everyone in it is a shallow, selfish arsehole, and the storylines only serve to highlight what dicks they are.

Sad to say that I also made this error and I think it’s been irretrievably ruined for me. Did a whole rewatch whilst on maternity leave with DD1 and I was increasingly aghast at each new series that these women could somehow get worse. I had loved it in my teens and twenties, but the scales absolutely fell from my eyes. Couldn’t find anything much to love in it anymore.

If I ever need a laugh my go to is the episode where Miranda’s mother dies and Charlottes in charge of the flowers.

Those flowers were supposed to say "We're so sorry, we love you," not "You're dead, let's disco"! 😂😂😂😂

I’ve just spent way too long looking for a really funny article about a woman’s bid to watch every episode of SATC in order, in one go. It was called something like “I Did it for Science” and it was amazing but I can’t find it anywhere. Probably read it ten years ago now. If anyone is better at googling than me and has any luck finding it way at the back of the internet somewhere, I would be most grateful.

I thought the same as @BuzzShitbagBobbly (just watched the episode where Carrie stands up Miranda) and was distracted by the smoking too!
Big taking drags of Carries cig whilst cooking! Kept saying to myself ‘Oooh, bet it stinks in there’ to every scene where the characters smoked indoors!

Rewatching it it just seems like Big can’t be arsed with drama. Carrie obviously translates that as he’s a shit and doesn’t care.

Ew yuck, no he’s always been really gross. I used to work in New York and my office was in his neighbourhood and his actual real life personality was not much different that his character either. He used to spend a lot of time hanging out in the Starbucks near me which was near a big university perving on 20 year olds who would be giddy over meeting him. 🤮

I was that little bit to you g when satc was first aired but watched it a couple of times on box sets. It's not aged well and all I can think is Carrie being a pretty crap friend. The scene that always springs to mind is when Miranda has just had the baby, struggling to breastfeed and hold a conversation and in the whole new mum blurr. Finally gets the baby to latch and Carrie decides to bugger of and leave as quick as she got there saying 'your a mum now' and pretty much I'll leave you to it. Arse-hole. How about make your friend a brew, stick around and have a chat or make yourself useful. For Christ sake. It winds me up just typing that out.
