To think I met some of the nastiest people ever today?

I was at a shopping centre today with my mum and DP. As the escalator wasn’t working, the alternative was a large flight of steep stairs or the lift. As my mum suffers with a heart condition that leaves her breathless easily, we went in the lift.

As the doors of the lift began to close, a young couple with a pushchair hastily tried to get on. As DP put him arm up to stop the doors closing, the woman of the two angrily said “Why are you letting ‘t doors close on me! Fucking idiot,”. DP actually APOLOGISED (despite the fact he had tried to stop the doors from shutting). The woman went on, aggressively, “You shouldn’t even be in the lift, there’s stairs over there!”. My mum calmly said “I have a heart condition, I can’t manage the stairs,”. But the woman and her partner just kept on, insisting that we shouldn’t be in the lift, that we were idiots, blah blah. My mum turned to me and said that stress isn’t good for her either (she was getting really worked up by this abuse). The man overheard her and said “Yeah, stress doesn’t do me good, either!”. As if the absolute buffoon was the one who should be stressed.

On and on they went, the entire time we were in the lift (which felt like an eternity). They just wouldn’t stop. I just wanted them pack it in; it was upsetting me, it was upsetting my mum. I said “shut up,” exasperated, as we were about to get out the lift. They didn’t respond to that.

Ahh, just writing that all out again has me shaking and feeling upset. I just can’t understand how and why people like that exist. Just nastiness and aggression for no reason at all.

Feel free to share any similar stories! I know MNetters have a few.

I had a similar experience in a lift once. I got in the lift on the 1st floor to go to the 3rd. On the 2nd floor a buggy couldn't get in. The mum swore at me and demanded I get out, I wasn't entitled to use the lift. She went on and on, pressing the button to open the doors. I had had a bad day, my leg was killing me so I took it off (I have a prosthetic) and yelled at her "am I entitled now?" She stepped back at let the lift go. Look on her face was priceless. Dont let it get to you OP Flowers

Hope your mum is ok. A couple in George(asda) woman trying on a coat putting her arm through as I went round the corner her arm nearly went in my face as she was putting it on. Her husband said watch out to her! She answered him with "she shouldn't be in the f*g way. So I'm un aware shes trying something on in the aisle and I'm to blame!. I said "charming! as I heard what she said, husband was embarrassed though.

It must be the month for elevator freaks. Last week someone called me a posh bitch when I held the door open for him to get out of a lift. I grinned and thanked him which made him gurn even more. Grin. I wasnt even really being sarcastic - I grew up on a farm and had no money until fairly recently, and looking a bit posh has been something of a goal - plus I can be an utter bitch if crossed, so I'm owning that too Grin.

I was driving along a freeway- busy- overtaking cars. A fully laden truck came hurtling up behind me (over speed limit). There was no where I could go and I was not prepared to get a speeding ticket (you get them here in Australia for 3kms over the limit!
As soon as I could, I pulled into another lane- truck sped past me, pulled in front and slammed his brakes on. I was nearly totalled. He then proceeded to cut around me as I tried to get away from him (bugger the speeding ticket). He almost pushed me off the bridge.

I left at next exit, called his employer, gave them his cab number (displayed on side of tractor cab pulling the load) and they knew who I meant.
reported it to the police I(I was terrified) who asked if I antagonized him! That was the only response from the police. I have a very low opinion of police in my state.
Hope the driver was sacked.

I once retrivied a womans bank card out of the cash machine and as I went to hand it in behind the counter she called me a thieving cunt and asked how much I had stolen!

pinkstripeycat · 05/08/2019 07:11

DH was driving and was cut up and forced to slam on brakes by 2 young girls who proceeded to give him rude hand gestures as they stopped in front of us at a red light. DH is police officer. Got out warrant card, got out of car and went to give girls words of advice on safety whilst driving. The driver did actually try and argue with him saying he was in the wrong, not her! DH asked her if she wanted to pull over and be re-educated her on the rules of the road. No she didn’t. DH got back to car b4 lights went to green.

I was out in our local town centre, a lot of building work going on at the moment so some of paved pedestrian areas are closed off, so not as spacious as normal

A woman was pushing her toddler in buggy and seemed in a hurry and irritated so she was travelling very close to the elderly couple in front

She clipped the back of his foot and then started ranting at him for being in her way. He just looked a bit gobsmacked at all this

I couldn't believe it, if I'd hit someone else with DC's pram I'd be all apologies and embarrassed, especially if it was me that caused it

Yes there are people like that out there

I mainly feel sorry for their children and wonder what life must be like at home if their parents behave like that in public Sad

Alexapourmeadrink · 05/08/2019 10:17

Loosely related to this thread (buggies) but I have to restrain myself when I see people use the buggy to test the traffic. I’ve seen it too often - buggy pushed over the edge of a pavement before the person pushing it stops at the side of the road. Angry

I needed to go into town to pick up a dress I was having shortened, as it was my DM's birthday she arranged to meet her sister for a coffee, so came with me. We parked in the car park near the alterations place and got my dress, did a bit of shopping and as we were heading back to the car to go and park where we were meeting my Auntie, my DM remember something that she had forgotten, so she said you move your car and I will walk down with DS (it is ok to walk down, but a really steep hill to go back up with a pushchair, my DM has bad arms so cant push him up and i have bad knees and a bad back), so I got down there first and whilst I was waiting decided to have a cigarette (yes I know they are bad I did manage to quit for years, but started again due to stress, I am currently working on quitting again) and to check my phone to see if my DH or my friend had messaged me and some guy in a van shouted "get something better to do with your life you fat c#&t" at me. I had never seen him before in my life, I was on my own, it left me almost in tears and shaking. I suffer with terrible anxiety and it has taken me years to be able to go anywhere on my own and wait for someone as the idea always terrified me and now I am right back there again.

Bmh54 · 05/08/2019 14:47

I can't remember why I thought I was being helpful, it was a busy road and to me he appeared to be struggling to set off , I was only a young woman, but point taken, I have never done it since.😏

MrsGideon · 05/08/2019 15:27

My mum was driving up to a roundabout once and was about 30 yards away when a man in a BMW or similar came tearing down the road towards her. She swerved out of his way and he came to a stop next to her, wound down his window and absolutely launched a tirade at her, shouting things like "YOU STICK TO YOUR SIDE OF THE ROAD, I'LL STICK TO MINE" for about two minutes while she just sat there calmly. When he'd eventually exhausted himself and petered off, she coolly looked him up and down and said with a slight smile "It's a one way street".

Apparently his face was an absolute picture, and the icing on the cake was that when he tried to wind the window up and drive off he got so flustered he stalled! My mum just slowly wound her window back up and drove off, smiling to herself.

Basketofkittens · 05/08/2019 15:37

People who shout abuse at strangers...why? Hmm

Catsinthecupboard · 05/08/2019 15:39

I was shopping and had my hands full with a couple of cartons of ice cream.

A young boy, abt 4yo, nearly ran into me. I nearly dropped my cartons on his head! Thankfully he swerved at the last second and so did I.

He looked up. I said, "oops."

I wasn't bothered. That's what children do sometimes.

His very nicely dressed mother followed me down the entire aisle saying variations of, "Be CAREFUL, you'll hurt the WOMAN."

I'm not certain why WOMAN was an insult, but the emphasis on it was there for the 8 or 9 times she said it.

I also didn't understand what I had done wrong except be in the aisle where her son could bump into me.

People are aggressively rude now. I don't understand it.

Catsinthecupboard · 05/08/2019 15:48

I am dyslexic and I cannot get the lift door open/close symbols right.

I can't count the number of times I've smiled at people flagging me to hold the door as I've cheerfully (and accidentally) hit the "close door" button...as I watched their faces disappear from sight with the closing doors.

Cats that made me LOL GrinGrinGrin

Solasshole · 05/08/2019 17:36

I recently had a vile charming young man yell at me to get off the fucking footpath and ride on the road. Unfortunately he did not notice that the footpath he was referring to was indeed a, very obviously sign posted, SHARED walking and cycling path. And I was also riding at a slow, safe space that allowed for quick braking/avoidance of angsty pedestrians who cant read signs Confused

EmeraldShamrock · 05/08/2019 17:49

Some people are angry idiot's.
I always tell DC when they meet an angry asshole ignore them, if they go low, to take the high, don't bring yourself down to their level.
In this case I think there is a time to go low too, I'd have told them to shut their mouth, I know it is scary but sometimes it is the only way.

FloralTeacup · 05/08/2019 19:06

Overheard a woman making a passive aggressive comment this afternoon. People stood up to queue for the bus as it pulled into the bay (bus station). She was in this queue. She said a few times “people just can’t wait to let people off before they get on!’”. Nobody had actually tried to board the bus before the other passengers alighted... Hmm

Long time ago whilst heavily pregnant with ds2 I was driving over a narrow bridge when a tosser in his huge van tried to come across at the same time. We both stopped, but he was a lot nearer to his end to reverse back. He was yelling out his window while his mates were laughing. As I got level he called me a numb cunt and gave me the finger, so I mouthed wanker at him. He stopped his van and got out, so I stopped and got out (I know dumb blonde moment) he saw how pregnant I was and looked a bit 😯 but shouted you called me a twat. I said no I didn't he said yes you did I can lip read. I said no I didn't I called you a wanker. His mates were hysterical and he just got back in and drove off with a very impressive wheel spin!

LonelyBones · 05/08/2019 20:35

A long long time ago, i parked in a car park. A man pulled up to park in the next space. I was minding my own business, glanced at him and walked off to do my shopping. Two hours later, upon my return there was a small folded up note tucked into the door handle which simply said "specky four eyed tw*t", or something very similarly hideous.

I was so perplexed, could not fathom what on earth i had done. And could only assume that it was the man in the next car as he had seen me park up. Nasty nasty vile POS, dont know what on earth prompted the tedious exercise of writing such vile note for me. Wanker.

Littlefluffycloudos · 05/08/2019 21:01

Someone shouted at me ‘get out of the fucking road you fucking idiot’ when I was simply closing the roadside door for my child quickly on a very quiet side street. They were just so angry. I felt glad I didn’t have their obviously shit life.

MachineBee · 06/08/2019 19:10

So sorry to hear what happened to you and your DM OP.

My little tale is nothing like as unpleasant as what happened to you but it is another symptom of a rudeness that has become almost normal these days.

I was waiting in a queue at the bar last week and finally my turn to get served arrived when some 18/19 year olds suddenly pushed into the queue further down and Barman went to serve them. I suspect he knew them.

I’m in my late 50s and have got used to my secret menopausal invisibility powers but the middle aged men waiting behind me called ‘Oi- there’s a queue - this lady is waiting!’

So I got a bit brave and said ‘yes I am’ and waved my cash.

Barman reluctantly came to serve me and I got my drinks.

A bit later outside the young men walked past and called me a dickhead. My mate who was with me simply turned to them and said ‘and you need to work on your manners... and your insults’ and then carried on with our conversation.

The older men from bar saw what happened and came over to congratulate my mate and me for ‘standing up for ourselves’ and expressed their astonishment at what they had witnessed earlier. I didn’t say anything about it happening all the time to most women my age. I just enjoyed what was quite a sweet moment to be defended by strangers in the face of rudeness.

8misskitty8 · 06/08/2019 20:05

I worked in a supermarket for a while and came across many rude people.
I was sworn at for going home on my evening shift despite being over my finishing time. One Easter someone had a bin bag of items and. Threw it towards me and the contents hit me (luckily just chocolate eggs) when they saw me locking the till.

I worked at the cigarette counter a few times and I refused to sell to a man who had been given money by a teenager who had just been denied cigarettes and beer by my colleague.
He screamed in my face and called me a whore and a cunt and tried to climb over the counter.
Those waiting in the queue were horrified and someone went for security.
