To tweet BA pilots that I earn less than the INCREASE they're demanding?

I earn 18000 a year. BA pilots are asking for an increase of 20000 a year. Yeah I know about skills and responsibility blah blah blah but AIBU to be upset that my holiday might be ruined? They're bleating in the papers today that they're upset that they now only get to stay in 4 star hotels instead of 5. Angry

If they are underpaid for their highly skilled, stressful and risky work, they are underpaid. It has nothing to do with what you earn. I don’t know how reasonable they are being but YABU.

exitlight · 01/08/2019 11:51

YANBU
I’m in the same boat as you 😡

exitlight · 01/08/2019 11:53

To clarify - same boat re: earnings. I haven’t had a holiday in 6 years so the flight thing 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m a bit meh about

SandraOhshair · 01/08/2019 11:54

Pay them what they like for the hours when my life is literally in their hands.

CheapSeats · 01/08/2019 11:55

Shall we pay bus drivers 167000 a year then Sandra? Your life is in their hands too.

GloGirl · 01/08/2019 11:55

I cant remember how much it is but they spend hundreds of thousands of pounds to learn how to fly! Increased risk of cancer with each flight, lack of home life, extra skill required.

I get it.

Marylou2 · 01/08/2019 11:56

Pay the pilots what they ask. Put them in 5 star hotels so they can get a good rest. Put £25 on the cost of my flight. I want them bright eyed and bushy tailed not cheap and uncheerful.

IAskTooManyQuestions · 01/08/2019 11:57

Im not sure what your salary has to do with someone elses earning power.

The two are incomparable.

7salmonswimming · 01/08/2019 11:59

Huh?

Do you think surgeons should never ask for pay rises, because of what you earn?

Or, indeed, anyone who might have an impact on your life?

Should all these people put their lives and livelihoods on hold.....for you?

AutumnCrow · 01/08/2019 11:59

Hasn't the UK had enough of the Daily Mail-type 'divide and rule' rhetoric?

We're ALL worth more.

HulksPurplePanties · 01/08/2019 12:00

YABU it's a high risk stressful job that cost them hundreds of thousands of pounds to learn to do.

Generally the more skill and training needed for the job, the more money you make.

herculepoirot2 · 01/08/2019 12:00

Shall we pay bus drivers 167000 a year then Sandra? Your life is in their hands too.

To a slightly lesser degree, perhaps?

BlueSkiesLies · 01/08/2019 12:00

Yeah, let’s have a race to the bottom! Nice one!

Feel free to retrain as a pilot if you think you’re able to.

Crispmonster123 · 01/08/2019 12:01

I want them to get paid well tbh. When you think what they do, we need them well paid. I’m on minimum wage and do begrudge them a penny

Crispmonster123 · 01/08/2019 12:01

*don’t

bernietaupinspen · 01/08/2019 12:02

Shall we pay bus drivers 167000 a year then Sandra? Your life is in their hands too.

As if it's even remotely comparable 🤦🏻‍♀️

CallMeOnMyCell · 01/08/2019 12:02

YABU, the job they do has huge risks involved and are highly skilled.

PurpleDaisies · 01/08/2019 12:03

It’s utterly ridiculous to try and compare pilots’ salaries to those of bus drivers.

HotChocolateLover · 01/08/2019 12:03

I just can’t get miffed about this. Yes i’d Love to earn more but I didn’t do the training so tough shit. YABU.

Crass12 · 01/08/2019 12:03

Bus drivers do not need the skill or training that pilots do. Hence they are paid more.

NotACleverName · 01/08/2019 12:03

YABU. It’s not a race to the bottom, you know. Maybe try asking your bosses for more money if you’re not happy.

Or retrain as a pilot. 🤷🏻‍♀️

SallyLovesCheese · 01/08/2019 12:03

They pay £70k-100k to train and have regular physical exams and other assessments while training, with the risk of being grounded or being kicked off the course. And they don't get any of the money back.

They're in the upper tax bracket and do a job where people's lives are in their hands. I can't get too upset about it.

Ladyofletters · 01/08/2019 12:04

Why don’t you train to be a pilot then OP?

It’s nobody’s fault that you don’t earn what you think you should other than yours. Re-train or find a new job, work an extra job, do a weekend job, make things and sell them in your spare time.

If you’re unhappy with your lot then change it but don’t begrudge others for the choices they have made.

araiwa · 01/08/2019 12:04

Youre complaining about £18000 a year when bangladeshi garment workers earn £25 a month for 14 hour days/ 7 days a week?

transformandriseup · 01/08/2019 12:04

You know you are being unreasonable as your job has nothing to do with theirs.

However if like me you are in a job which doesn’t increase your pay when your employer increases your workloads or increase it despite glowing reviews, YANBU to feel frustrated at being underpaid but it has nothing to do with other people’s jobs.
