To tweet BA pilots that I earn less than the INCREASE they're demanding?

CheapSeats · 01/08/2019 11:48

I earn 18000 a year. BA pilots are asking for an increase of 20000 a year. Yeah I know about skills and responsibility blah blah blah but AIBU to be upset that my holiday might be ruined? They're bleating in the papers today that they're upset that they now only get to stay in 4 star hotels instead of 5. Angry

You are only on £18,000 a year.
Well, go and do some training, spend your own money to increase your skills and get a job that pays a lot more!! Not rocket science is it?

Mine and my families life is in their hands when we fly. I want to ensure they are skilled enough to handle any problem, and don’t make a mistake!

BarbariansMum · 01/08/2019 12:14

X posts.

Yes bernie that's what the training is for. They're not being paid to sit there twiddling their thumbs.

The fact is that hundreds of occupations have a higher death rate than commercial airline pilots.

GabsAlot · 01/08/2019 12:15

I give up-yes they do training yes it can go wrong but it doesnt its not a hollywood film i dont feel symapthy for them i feel for the people whose holidays have been cancelled

MollyButton · 01/08/2019 12:15

YABU
The thing to remember is that most people are considerably worse off than they were 10/20 years ago. The exception are a very small group of Super rich who are much much richer.
Yes the low paid are worse off - but so are those in what are high paid and high risk jobs.
So whilst the Pilots pay increase might seem excessive to you, it is probably still a pay cut compared to what they once got. But someone at BA may well be getting quite rich, but it isn't the pilots.

AbbyHammond · 01/08/2019 12:15

If you're worried about strikes, tweet your complaint to BA!

Joerev · 01/08/2019 12:15

GabsAlot

I know a ba pilot they get too much as it is-forget the life in your hands comment they literally sit there for hours and then land the plane-bus drivers have to negotitate more than they do-theyre rich and greedy

I don’t think you really do know a pilot. If you did you sure as s**t wouldn’t be saying that

fernandoanddenise · 01/08/2019 12:15

I want pilots well paid so it attracts competent and highly qualified people.... pilot error and crashes have been linked with falling standards as airlines focus on the bottom line.
I want doctors, teachers and midwives to be well paid too.
I want nurses well paid, I want pharmacists well paid heck I want everyone to be fairly paid.

bernietaupinspen · 01/08/2019 12:15

yes they have to know the ins and outs of the plane but as ive said hes actuall told me how easy it is

I suspect he is just saying that because he realises you wouldn't understand anyway. It's easier.

PurpleDaisies · 01/08/2019 12:15

The fact is that hundreds of occupations have a higher death rate than commercial airline pilots.

The pilot is responsible for everyone else on the plane.

Teddybear45 · 01/08/2019 12:16

@GabsAlot - every pilot I know working in the US, India, China, and the UK, is a veteran. Approximately, globally, 30-40% of pilots are and these guys get paid, on average, at least 20% percent more by airlines because of their experience.

Looking4wards · 01/08/2019 12:16

Oh here we go. How DARE anyone spend years to learn some v complex skills and wants to be paid more for it? Cheeky buggers. It's so easy isn't it. Can't believe you haven't done it too. Oh wait...

Tryingtoslim · 01/08/2019 12:16

But it costs pilots around £127,000 to learn how to fly not including the flying hours needed to initially get on a course. This works differently to the average student loan and is essentially a normal debt. As a result they obviously need to be paid higher to make it worth while, when you include everything including the responsibility of life.

Also to the person who mentioned bus drivers. If a bus breaks they just pull over and get off not quite the same with planes is it?

In a adition, due to the nature of flying the responsibility outside of work is also large. Not having the same social life as the long flights combined with mundane not doing as much due to auto pilot can make ANY tiredness really dangerous. I can’t remember what it’s called but something in the brain causes people to see things which they are used to seeing that are not always there. With pilots this can be deadly and they must avoid this.

So yes pilots should be paid more for the skills and concentration affecting all areas of their lives that they endure

BarbariansMum · 01/08/2019 12:17

Yes daisy they have a job with a high level of responsibility- just not a very personally dangerous one.

bernietaupinspen · 01/08/2019 12:18

I wouldn’t say the job involves “huge risks”, when was the last time something happened to a BA plane?

herculepoirot2 · 01/08/2019 12:18

Hercule yes they have to know the ins and outs of the plane but as ive said hes actuall told me how easy it is
100k is bloody enough

Obviously it isn’t or they would be recruiting pilots for 100k. 🤷🏻‍♀️

GabsAlot · 01/08/2019 12:19

Do you want me to get him to post that hes not a veteran? ffs he was 25 and started training from an office job

GabsAlot · 01/08/2019 12:20

I dont belive in strikse i never will condone them its pathetic-so sorry everyone youre holidays are cancelled

Mia1415 · 01/08/2019 12:20

YABU They have to pay up to £120K to train!

I don't see how your earnings are in any way relevant to their earnings.

dearohdearohdear9 · 01/08/2019 12:20

I was under the impression that pilots are highly trained in the hope that they never need to utilise much of their training. Think the guy who landed his plane on the Hudson. A situation that most pilots never find themselves in, but they all need that level of training. A plane crash could kill thousands.

HulksPurplePanties · 01/08/2019 12:20

yes it can go wrong but it doesn't

But it does. Little things don't go according to plan all the time. Just because it doesn't result in a massive crash doesn't mean nothing happens.

I highly doubt you actually know any pilots.

SandraOhshair · 01/08/2019 12:20

I think your argument was killed dead by the bus driver comparison.

PeoniesarePink · 01/08/2019 12:21

I never had any strong feelings towards Pilots until watching the one land that plane in the Hudson in New York - Chesley Sullenburger. That man was so so calm and logical in the face of absolute terror.

I make a mistake at work? I get shouted at sometimes and a job gets delayed in the workshop but no one dies.

You make a mistake flying an Airbus with 525 passengers onboard....... doesn't bear thinking about.

HulksPurplePanties · 01/08/2019 12:21

Yes daisy they have a job with a high level of responsibility- just not a very personally dangerous one.

Cause the pilot often walks away from the crash? Hmm

Do you have a reasonable justification for that? Or are you just spouting?
